Wow. Just.... wow. My sister, who is studying to be an architect in college, has not slept in over three days. These models that she has to build are just taking up all of her life. She spends almost all of her time in studio working on projects, sometimes not going back to her apartment to sleep at all! This is the second time I have heard from her about not sleeping for three days in a row. She often skips a night of sleep just to work on her project, and I'm getting concerned. Yes, I want her to pass her classes, but I think she could easily die from lack of sleep. Any advice on.... giving her advice? Any help would be appreciated.

Well I haven't slept in 2 days. Although that is mainly because of coffee. I wouldn't say that it's anything to worry about too much, It's not as though you can stay awake forever, when she really really needs to sleep, her body will make her.

What are you thinking?? She is your sister! You're supposed to have been over there at first sight of such habits and dragging her back home for rest and sleep with or against her will! Losing sleep is unhealthy and dangerous all together, especially three nights in a row - that's horrible!

You're "getting concerned"? Certainly doesn't seem like you care at all.

Well, I'm not sure about that last post! Though yes, it might be a good idea to mention that you're concerned about her.

But she will have a good reason I'm sure for not sleeping three nights in a row! No one does that just for the fun of it!

I don't think there is any way just to tell her to sleep more, she has a lot of work to do and obviously cares a lot about what she's doing.
The question is, how much can her body take of this? Don't get too concerned about this though, like badassbob said, when she really needs to sleep, her body will make her fall asleep.
How about asking her if there was any way she could get more sleep?

In regards to Merlock: if I could go there, I would. I'm sorry I didn't elaborate, but she is in college in a different state, and I am the younger one. My parents would not let me go on a road trip out of state at this age =P. She has a lot of work to do.... but I think it could seriously damage her body. Sometimes, your body can't make itself fall asleep; for example, a common torture is sleep depravation, in which they keep the person awake by constantly stimulating their senses. I'm just a bit concerned, and am open to any more suggestions.

Depriving yourself of sleep reduces your judgmental ability and makes you more prone to making mistakes and causing accidents similar to if you'd be drunk. It also causes cramps and hallucinations and makes you forget to do things and to linger on thoughts, without doing anything. That means she'll work much faster and will do a much better job if she does sleep. She'll make up for the "lost" working time that way.
Other than that, sleep deprivation also has effects on a longer term. for instance: short term memory loss, weight gain, and nausea, or even depression and psychosis. Finally, while it's true that there's a small chance for a regular person to die from sleep deprivation, it does significantly increase the chance of, possibly fatal, accidents.

Of course, telling her that you're really worried about her is the first thing you should do, but these are some serious dangers I'd at least tell her about.

Lol three days with no sleep isnt going to kill anyone, it definitely isnt the best choice, but once she hits around 5-6 days she'll crash whether she wants to or notl, unless she uses drugs to stay awake. (Meth can keep you awake for DAYS without killing you)

Sure, if she does this for once, it's okay. She'll build up a sleep debt, but after sleeping a lil extra, there should be no problem at all. This becomes a problem if she keeps doing it, though.

Exactly, I wouldn't worry about it unless you start to hear about it more often. Yeah, it's not healthy, but she's not gonna die after 3 days! She's probably not going to feel too hot, and her immune system may be more weak. She'll likely get sick easier, catch a cold or something. Maybe tell her that, if she keeps this up, her body won't be as strong as it could be to fight sickness and if she gets sick enough it could put her out of commission for a while. Then she'll end up losing even more time.

Well, you could try introducing her to polyphasic sleep/Uberman sleep schedule. If it can work with her schedule, she may find it very beneficial, being able to stay up for around 22 hours of the day, and still get a healthy sleep that her brain needs. Do some more research on polyphasic sleep if you're unsure about it.
