There has been much discussion about the Nova Dreamer and Dreamaker. I own
the latter and offered my opinions on it in the active post. I am actually pretty
satisfied with it.
The main complaint I heard, is that it's too expensive at ~$250.00.
Here's a suggestion. Sometimes when I wear the mask, it doesn't detect REM and
doesn't go off. However, it often gets incorporated into my dream (since the sensation
of the mask can affect the dream synthesis).
I often have one of two effects:
1) I dream I have a mask on but can see through it.
2) I have a false awakening and find the mask uncomfortable.
The point here, is even wo/ the Mask detecting, it is generating dream signs.
I have used a plain old sleep mask and achieved the same result. I have a bulky cotton
sleep mask that's a little uncomfortable. If I use it occasionally - not giving my brain a
chance to get used to it - it tends to get incorporated into my dreams.
There you have it, a semi-effective lucid dream mask for about $15.00.
Enjoy

Guess it is something to try out. Besides from a piece of equipment that costs so much money you'd at least expect it to work everynight. Rediculous that it doesn't always register REM-sleep.
Well I can imagine that sleeping with a cotton sleeping mask might work as the slight discomfort and the sensation of the mask on may lead you to notice it in the middle of a Dream. Especially if during waking life you learn to Associate the Sleeping mask with Lucid Dreaming you may notice it on your face while in a Dream and them remember the Link to Lucidity you made earlier to pick up on Lucidity that moment.
Together we Dream up Reality. Many of us are unaware of that process and unknowingly and subconsciously dream up terrible scenarios for us all to suffer.
But YOU and many more everyday HAVE become aware of that process and are now consciously and intentionally Dreaming up wonderfull scenarios that are gaining more and more Power as We, Awakened Lucid Dreamers of Reality, grow and grow in Numbers.
We were all once so caught up in Mundane Reality that we became unaware of the Dreaming Process. We also were all once so Caught up in Dreams that we lost touch with Reality.
Now we have found the Calm Center and the Truth that balances there, in between Dreams and Reality.
Oh and by the way,
Overestimate not the Value of our Concrete Knowledge;"Common sense"/Rationality,
for doing so would make you Blind for the unimaginable, unparalleled Capacity of and Wisdom contained within our Felt Knowledge;Subconscious Intuition.
If you had the mask on snugly enough, wouldn't it actually chafe your eyelids when you entered REM sleep and your eyes starting trailing all over the place under them? That seems like it would be a very distinctive sensation, and one that would last as long as your dream did, so there definitely seems to be merit in this.
But then again, might one not achieve the same results by wearing a tight armband, or going to sleep with socks on, etc etc?
