It is different to an iso tank, because of the amount of time you spend in the environment. It is
prolonged sensory deprivation, or at least visual deprivation.
I'm not an expert on this, but here's what I understand about it: It needs to be done in a special building, because there can be
absolutely no light leaking in at all. You need to be able to live (eat, sleep, go to the bathroom) in total darkness for at least three days. My friend is planning to build one of these on a property in the mountains here in South Africa. I believe there is also one in Japan.
What you eat is also very important. There is a particular combination of seeds and nuts that you have to eat to help the process (all natural, nothing hallucinogenic). On the second day, your brain starts releasing seratonin, and apparently by the third, it releases DMT.
People do this as a Vision Quest. Pretty radical stuff!
