Violent Shudders
When I usually go to sleep I undergo a series of repeatable phases each night, each of them fairly easy to remember. First I will lay in bed for a while without being tired, then I will turn onto my side or stomach and lay there for a while, then I will think random thoughts as I become tired (such as "1...2...3...applesauce" and "banana stickers" and so forth). However it is around this point when I begin to count from 1 to 100, twice. I will then stretch my body to crack the tightened muscles, and begin to recognize my dropping awareness. I will then continue thinking about nonsense until my vision begins to adjust and everything becomes darker.
Next thing I know I will almost instantly lose my short-term memory and it becomes almost impossible to keep my flow of thoughts on one topic for what seems a minute to me. I will also begin to experience twitches in the muscles of my body, usually at my fingers and/or legs. I will keep telling myself not to fall asleep or to stay awake for a short period of time, but eventually I will lose consciousness. Now here's the freaky part:
When I lose consciousness, the NEXT thing I remember (and this has been repeating for at least three nights now) is waking up while feeling all the muscles in my body twitching rapidly. It's almost as if I feel a vibration, but it feels more violent and irregular than that. As soon as I wake up though, the twitching stops and I look at the clock to see I've had an hour or so in my lapse of consciousness. When I close my eyes again I see random but colorful lights, and as I focus on them I begin to fall asleep again. I haven't stayed conscious up to this point yet, but I'll make it my priority tonight to do so.
My question is, can anybody give me an explanation for what that twitching and bright lights are? It isn't a one-time phenomenon, apparently, so I know there must be some explanation for it.

LD's being 17 - 2
Hi there!
Those bright lights, I think, are HI, and the twitching is just a natural thing for the human body. I think it's part of SP.
Sorry for such a short post, just a few words of mine to say what I think they must be.

Oh, I have had something similar to this before. I would twitch and shake violently and wake up at the exact same time every night. When I woke up I would open my eyes and it was almost like everything was sped forward vigerously, everything went fast and I could see dark images swoop forward close to my face and I started having hallucinations, after a while it was like the fastness would repeat(if that makes sense) but after a while it would calm down and I would fall back asleep. I used to close my eyes tightly because this frightened me alot, when I did close my eyes I would get bright coloured flashing lights.
This horrified me terribly and I used to wake up crying almost everynight.
This is pretty hard to explain but it's the closest I can get.
This was when I was younger (I was still able to LD more so than now)
I reconmend relaxing deeply, (not too deeply or you will make it worse) taking deep breaths and try and slow things down.
If that helps at all.

i think i've had that feeling of everything being sped forward before!!
when i was a little kid sometimes I'd wake up and I'd have a really weird feeling in my head and a feeling that everything is going faster
I'd like stumble out of bed feeling really dizzy and I'd see loads of weird objects float in front of me
it'd usually happen when i was excited about something like before Christmas
i have started getting it again recently but not as often
this time though I'd stop and recognize what was going on and I'd usually just wait it out xD
might not be exactly the same as what you felt but it'd be cool if someone could explain what it is
oh i forgot to mention the repeating thing too!
i remember getting that a few times too, it was what made it scary for me
like i'd watch myself do the same thing over (this was during the other thing where i felt dizzy)
again i'm not sure if it's exactly the same as what you felt

Well actually I've never gotten out of bed before while these things have happened, so I wouldn't know if I'd see those weird objects like you did. But the thing is that they only happen once a night, and usually I will fall right to sleep once it ends. I tried to experience this again last night but I didn't even wake up in the middle of the night so no success in seeing what's beyond the flashing lights I see when I close my eyes.
