      Visualization Question

Ok, I have a question about visualizations, hence the name. When you are visualizing things, do you actually see the thing that you are visualizing like a solid picture in your mind. Like take a carrot for example. Visualize one now. Do you actually "see" it in your head, or do you just know what it looks like.

Sorry if this is confusing. I have just had this question for a long time and finally decided to ask. I myself don't actually "see" anything in my head when I am not dreaming.

I can manage it. Sometimes I just know what it looks like, but when I get deep enough into thought, which doesn't take too much effort, I can see it.

Its only when I can't concentrate or focus at all that I can't truly visualize it.

I was just doing this the other day; and I was asking my BF at the same time to try it. When he finally figured out what I was talking about, we both agreed that we don't really "see" a carrot or whatever floating in space in front of our closed eyes. Not like HI, where I actually do see things floating in space.

I wonder how many people can actually "see" the thing that they are visualizing. Maybe I just need to concentrate harder, like you do, Exobyte.

Yeah, I was just asking so I know if I should practice some more visualizing. I don't think a little practice would hurt.

The word visualize refers to making an image visual, seeing it as if a picture you are looking at. This is the same as "picture it in your mind's eye". Simply knowing what it looks like is not actually "picturing it", not seeing it as an image in the mind.

I am able to do this quite easily. I just pretend that I am looking at a carrot and try to see it and an image forms in the mind. Doing this is a way of guiding and controling one's imagination. It can be a useful spiritual exercise.
