Probably the most frightening dream in my life

First of all, its my first post here, so hi.
I came from another dream forum, but they got shut down, so now I'm here!

I would like to start with a dream I had March of last year. At the time it scared me so bad, I didn't even think about it. Only now am I willing to even discuss this scary dream, which is also an interesting and complex dream.

First some background, I had a project due a few days from the night which I experienced the dream. The next morning I was supposed to wake up early and get some special film developed for this project, I had to drive to a photo lab that was at least a 30 minute drive. That night I couldn't sleep, and had some minor anxiety about how long the film would take to develop, and would I get the project in on time. Now for the dream.

In my dream, I went to the above photo lab, It started with me entering the lab, and asking about rates, the man behind the counter directed me to a sheet on the counter which had all the rates. I remember there being large metal racks behind him, which I assumed were for developing film. The dream then abruptly ended and I was waking up to leave to go to the photo store. It was early morning, no sunlight yet. I walked into the bathroom as I do every morning, and it was too dark to see as a result of the sun not being up yet. I switched on the light switch, and looked in the mirror to see another version of me in the room. I guess the term is Doppelganger. I immediately became very scared and the dream took on a nightmare tone. The other version of me grabbed me in a choke hold, and started to strangle me. I was watching this all in the mirror. Being experienced with nightmares, I realized I was still dreaming and had experienced a false awakening, rather than maintain lucidity I woke up.
I have tried to describe every detail I can remember about this horrifying dream. I don't have a journal, but I remember this one quite well. Doing some research I discovered seeing your own doppelganger, could be an omen of your own death! I asked my mother about this dream, since she is a neurologist and sleep specialist, and she basically boiled it down to the anxiety producing a nightmare. But I have never in my life had a dream with two of me in it, and even false awakening dreams are rare for me. I'm now quite frightened so I hope someone could shed some logical light on this for me.

Don't worry about it. Mirrors in dreams are almost always frightening. I don't believe that you are going to die because you saw yourself. I think a task of the month was to ask your dream self something about you that you don't even know ( or it could of been just a dream character ) but if it was their self, they are still here. But stress and anxiety usually causes nightmares.

Edit: I had a dream some woman was strangling me and stabbing me and I could hardly breathe and was passing out ( Not sure why I was losing my breath in a dream when the dream body does the breathing ) and my dad just stood there laughing, when I was begging for help. That was not a very pleasant dream I understand how you feel.
if you can read this then you are about to be punched

      dk2852,

I've got a few questions you can ask yourself to help determine what was behind the dream.

      1. On your actual, physical trip to the lab, were there any unusual circumstances?
      2. Was there anything about the project that made you uncomfortable?
      3. Was there anything that you were doing at that time that could have been "cutting your own throat"?
      4. How have you felt health-wise since having the dream, both physically and emotionally?

It is possible for mirrors in dreams, as in waking life, to be portals. That makes it possible for the dream to have been a spiritual encounter, where the entity could have taken your guise through your reflection in the mirror. Why? Perhaps to steal some of your energy, perhaps for another reason. Such encounters in dreams are more common than many would believe.

Looks like you had a false awakaning. I really want to have one because it will help me become lucid.

Well I've thought more about the dream months after I had it, rather than after I had it. The surprising thing to me was the false awakening. I had never had one before that I can remember.
My actual trip to the lab was later that morning and I don't recall there being anything strange, I was impressed because thats the only photo lab in this area that can process slide film.
The main thing was that I was worried I might be late for school, and I was worried the project wouldn't be completed on time. I thought that the film would take too long to process, and it wouldn't be completed.
As for anything that was bugging me at the time, I was involved with this girl, who I had the deepest desire to be in a relationship with, but she had a shitty boyfriend. I think maybe there was an inner struggle or something.
As for false awakenings, I don't know why you would want one, from what I've heard they're usually always scary, and end up in nightmare type things. Almost everyone looks in the mirror in the morning, and the only problem with mirrors is that they are almost always frightening or disturbing in dreams.

      dk2852,

Mirrors usually symbolize a reflection of oneself. There was obviously at least one emotional issue you were dealing with, as you state
I was involved with this girl, who I had the deepest desire to be in a relationship with, but she had a shitty boyfriend. I think maybe there was an inner struggle or something.
and this conflict could certainly show up colorfully in your dreaming, but I get the feeling there is something else that you haven't revealed or perhaps have not thought of that is relevant to this dream.

A false awakening, or waking into another dream, is usually drawing your attention to a matter that needs to be dealt with, and the dream within a dream (within a dream...) gives the dreamer the message multiple times in multiple ways, making the dreamer more likely to pay attention and understand the message.

Without knowing more about what was happening in your life when you experienced this dream, I would suspect that it was drawing attention to a heavy personal issue that you were dealing with at that time that may have been "costly" to you.

So you think the first part of the dream is more relevant then the second part? I wish I could remember more about the first part of the dream, but it really was just as I described it. I had called this photolab beforehand to make sure they could process this type of film. I knew it was run by an asian couple, since I talked to both of them on the phone. But, when I went inside the shop in my dream only the guy was there.
Now get this, when I actually went to the shop the next day, and when I went to pick up my film only the lady was there.
      Could that mean anything?

No, each part of the dream is relevant.

      Could that mean anything?
*Everything* in a dream means *something*.

Again, without more info as to what was happening in your life at that time, it's hard to give you more detailed info on what this dream could mean. Ultimately, the dreamer is the one who must decide what their dreams mean - interpreters can help shed light on it, but the final decision must be yours.

Try sleeping/dreaming on it with the intent of understanding the dream. There are a different ways to do this. You could write your intent to understand this dream on a piece of paper and put it under your pillow, or you could keep the intent in your mind as you fall asleep. Make sure you have a pen & paper or a recorder by your bed, and make notes on any dreams you can recall each time you wake, and then study your dreams for a response to your intent.

Good luck! Let us know what you find out.
