most file formats identify themselves at the start of the file

Ok, so I've got these files, and the extensions are all like .015 or .063 or whatever. Problem is, is that neither UltimateZip, Winrar, or 7Zip seem to be able to do anything with them. They all just say they don't recognize the file, or give me some diagnostic error and don't do anything. Any other programs I can use to extract the stuff out of these files?

Ok, I did that and it just showed me a lot of squares, circles and numbers. What does that mean?
doesn't look good
you have no idea what program created these data files?

No, but they were listed as rar files from the instructions that came with them, and the instructions just said to unrar them first.

Maybe the extensions got changed/messed up in the download? Try manually changing the extension to .rar and then extracting them with 7Zip.
Can you get your hands on a *nix computer? gzip can handle lots of formats.
Usually, if you get a number extension, it was part of a package that was being downloaded that stopped halfway through, they are usually temp files. What program did you use to download them?
Try a .sit expander, Lots of programs consider them rar zips because the compression is similar, but winrar won't open them.
