      I'm having a problem with my microsoft word

      The program suddenly terminates and doesn't recover any of the work like it normally would. This terrifies me to say the least...

      This comes up:

      Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

      Program C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\WINWORD.EXE

      abnormal program termination

      -Please help, would reinstalling help?

      The new office uses Visual C++, not VB? Did you upgrade from an older version of Office? The old ones used VB as their scripting language, not C++, you might just have to install Visual C++.

      nothing to do with scripting languages
      Word (as all components of office) is written in C++
      specifically, MS's Visual C++

      Word is crashing on an unhandled exception
      hence the reference to the VC++ runtime library

      yeah, try reinstalling

      If that doesn't solve it, I'd suggest using open office as a suitable substitute.

      If that doesn't fix it, something is severely broken, as in a virus or corrupted Windows files.

      Get Open Office, it's free. I know that's a bit of a cop-out, but it works just as well as Microsoft Word and it doesn't fail as hard.

      I always found that OOo was terrible when it came to editing and saving PDF files. Maybe they've fixed it, but that was always the biggest beef with it that I had. I also found it very slow (probably due to tons of Java code) and hated the fact that it didn't use the universal spell/grammar checker. It has it's own so if you add a word in your web browser, it doesn't show up in OOo's database.

      The OP wanted to know how to fix his MS Word, not suggestions for an alternative. But like I said, it works just as well.

      I've used it to edit PDFs, but I find that it's lacking compared to some of the other suites. Maybe I'm just not used to how OOo does it.
