PROBLEM! I can't unpack the .bin files. If you could extrat these for me, that would be cool. Go to here:

but you're going to have to write these to a floppy disk
these are raw disk images, so simply copying them won't work
(akin to .iso CD images)

under linux, just do

Code:

dd if=./System\ Startup of=/dev/fd0

but god knows how you do this under windows

Heh, I like Damn Small Linux for this. It's tiny, something like 50mb, and uses the Blackbox (or is it Fluxbox...) window manager. It's awesome.

Questions from someone who is interested in trying Linux but is still nervous to try dual-booting it with her older machine (gift = no OS discs in case something screws up):

Does this mean that I don't have to load Linux on my machine, but would simply load it from my desktop after running the .bat file and QEMU Accelerator file?

Would any sort of security be compromised?

What else would I need to know to get this running?

I started looking through the first 10 lessons of the Linux tutorial that they have to get myself at least slightly familiar with it. I haven't looked into Ubuntu specifically. On the whole, I'd rather screw up a $10 flash drive (which it doesn't sound like I would) than my windows machine and be unable to reload the OS. Thanks for your help (if you have time)!

It does mean that you have to load Linux on your machine, but it's running as a program, so if crashes, it should act like a not-responding application, unless you do something really stupid, like messing up the Windows folder As long as you keep it inside what you do normally, there shouldn't be any problems.
Your security won't be compromised.
I don't think you need to know anything else to get it running

Oh, btw. You can download full OS's from the interwebz. It's illegal, but in your case it's justifiable.

I consider myself tech savvy, but by no means am I an expert. I know enough to not screw things up, but also enough to really screw things over if I mess up (When I worked here in the IT department pre-Dec. 07, I took the voicemail system down three times. Mom wasn't too happy.)

Can I suggest using Virtualbox, instead of Qemu

Qemu is great if you need to emulate different CPU architectures (x86 -> PowerPC)

I have never used linux and I question how it is in any way superior to Windows XP when using a computer for personal use...especially to the pirated copy I'm running.

Pretty much. I'd like someone to explain why anyone would choose linux over XP as I have heard linux is not as user-friendly.

This is something you are going to have to research and come to an opinion about

I could list out my reasons for using Linux
100 people could even list out their individual reasons
but it's your situation that matters to you, not anyone elses

If you're interested, I'd recommend Ubuntu

Linux is way safer than XP (or any other windows OS system for that matter) because of a few differences in setup.

It's true, linux isn't as easy to use as XP, but that's more because you're just used to XP
You could always put on GnomeXp, which makes Ubuntu (linux) look like XP
