Tell Me About Running A Message Board

I run a local message board for moms of babies under 3 years. Recently we've had some drama. (Not unusual for a message board, but more difficult when it's between women that you've been seeing as "friends" on a regular basis.)

My arch nemesis on the board (come on, we all have one, even the board owner, although you have to remain tactful) suddenly started her own "secret" message board and privately invited other members to join it, including two of my moderators who *did* sign up, unbeknownst to me. (I found out when the two fessed up about a month after signing up.)

I'd love any advice regarding this, or any advice at all regarding running a message board.

ETA: I have no problem with my mods being on the other board, the secrecy was what bugged me....

Just ignore troublesome users. They tend to fizzle out if they really have nothing useful to say - ever.

I probably don't have great advice but I'll give it shot, firstly this women is your enemy, and she's going behind your back to make another message board! I suggest you ban her, thats enough of an excuse.

With the mods, yeah they went behind your back but they did confess, which is something. It's easy to be uneasy with them but you're going to have to trust them. Also maybe hire some new mods as well.

Now this part is tricky but maybe you can join her's and do the same thing she did to you. Also look at her board and copy anything that yours doesn't have. Any thing that could improve your forum.

Grow thick skin you will need it. Don't let them overwhelm you, remember there are hundreds of them and just one of you.

Be friendly and courteous (except to the jerks), the mood of the leader is picked up by and mirrored by the membership.

On the bad days, just hit the off switch and walk away. On the good days, share your good fortune with the membership.

Don't take yourself too seriously, be compassionate and willing to help.

Don't drink too much!
