I'll literally look at a clock on the wall and study just how it sits there, how the lighting reflects, the shadows, the people. I'll even move to another position in the room / place to look at everything from multiple angles. I just really try to get a feel for my surroundings.

I'll then proceed to think "if this were a dream, what would I do?". First thing I do is my RC's (nose and finger count), then I'll look around and think about what I would do, and try my best to visualize it. I also imagine what I think would be different if it were a dream. I'll think to myself, if this were a dream, people would be out of place, buildings would be completly random (like a mcdonalds in a class room or something stupid like that), anything that would seem dreamish.

This awareness practice is HUGE. Done enough, it will carry over into your sleep, where you yet again will be very analytical.
Exactly. You don't have to always be analyzing things, just spiking your awareness and observation at random points throughout the day.

I just realized... I went on the topic of WBTB when this is a DILD guide.
What I meant was I do try the awareness (not as much as you do, though), but my lucids are really rare. And when I try WBTB, I never actually fall asleep, I just sit there for an hour or so until I give up for the night. And what's irritating is that as soon as I stop trying I fall asleep normally.

Oh boy, that's pretty much how my WBTBs go as well.

To get back on topic, many thanks for the guide, puffin. I've been trying to keep paying attention to my surroundings as often as i can so hopefully I'll see some results soon.

I think this will be the key for me (and I'm sure many others) to be successful at gaining lucidity on a regular basis. I mentioned in another post that for my whole life, I have accepting everything as "reality" while dreaming and never questioned all the weird stuff that should seem obviously out-of-place! I have started to keep a dream journal and routinely doing RCs, but I think the most important thing is to develop "dream awareness" by frequently practicing while I'm awake. I think that's what you and many other posters here are saying - practice becoming truly aware of your surroundings so that it will carry over into dreams. Once the elements of awareness and observation creep in, it will be THAT much easier to recognize when you are dreaming!

Ha, I'm getting excited thinking about gaining this new sense of awareness. I even stopped 3 or 4 times today while at work and on my way home to just become aware of what was happening around me, trying to train my brain to get in the routine of developing my "conscious self." Truly powerful stuff!

Thanks for the guide, and sweet dreams all!!

It sounds like you're on the right track. And like you said, it definitely is amazing how we go through dreams as if we're not really awake. That's why it's good to kick up our awareness levels every once in a while. Good luck having LDs!

I think I'm gonna give DILD's a shot. the 4 LD's I had have all been DILDs by fluke, so might as well try something that works. The only thing that is a pain in the *** is that I have Dial up (stupid lazy ISP) so its really hard to download any helpful music :/

That's unfortunate. I have to use dial-up when I'm in British Columbia on holidays, and it sure is a pain in the butt. Well, good luck with DILDing!

I've listened to music quite a few times while falling asleep, but I haven't linked it to having more lucid dreams. Binaural beats may help you relax and increase brainwave function though; some people believe it helps induce lucidity but it should be supplemented with an actual LD-inducing technique such as DILD or MILD.

In the short time that I've been using binaural beats with audio cues, I haven't had any luck with music prompting an LD. But I'm sure the concept is solid, it could work if you hear a cue and you perform a RC that fails. It does help me personally with relaxation and physically getting to sleep, although last night it seems like I was so relaxed that when I woke up to write in my DJ, I went RIGHT back to sleep while listening to the beats! Weirddd.

I'm going to keep trying to see if any of the audio cues will prompt a RC while dreaming. Let us know how it works for you!

      Sweet dreams!

The problem with audio and visual cues are that you still have to be aware enough to consider you may be dreaming. That's why, myself at least, I've deemed them ineffective. But it can work for some people.

Puffin I have to say thanks to this guide! I already knew about RCing throughout the day, but didnt know about the "analyzing the reality". Im now doing this daily, randomly and I hope I will get some results! All of my DILDs occured naturally without strange things (just BANG! nose pinch) without RCing through the day, but it stopped for some 4 weeks. And again, hope I will get more this way. I have with me some isochronic tones and no binaural beats that I havent used for a time and I think I had 1 or 2 from these, I will try them out again.

You can get them here: Iso-tones.com - Isochronic Tones

Dont be scared about the wacky design of the site. The tones work better in WBTB, but they also work when you go to bed first (only a little). Here are the tones you should try:

Mind trap - This one seems to help WILDing (friends results). I tried a WILD listening to it, did nothing, I ended up falling asleep. Then I woke up again and turned it off. Then I fell asleep and I had a DILD!
Lucid dreaming - I Think I never tried it but give it a shot, listen to it when you go to bed first or in WBTB.
Lucid spike - (only in WBTB) Again never tried this one, but some guys had results with this. Basically this mp3 has a 20 minute silence, then it will gradually make you lucid. NOTE: Use this when you fall asleep.

PS: If you listen to one of these just put them on repeat. Also good news, they dont need phones so you can listen to them with columns

I think questioning my surroundings was something that was missing from my reality checks. Just recently I've started to routinely observe what's going on, if anything weird is happening etc. I hope it helps.

I was only doing RC's I guess questioning the situation is better too thanks Puff.
