      Bicycling

      So, recently, I've been doing 10 miles on my bike whenever I can, and at least 4 when I can't.

      I started about two weeks ago, so when do you say I'll notice a biggering of the muscles?

      very slowly. The general rule of thumb is as follows:

      1-6 reps increases strength
      6-20 reps increases bulk
      20+ reps increases endurance

      So if you are looking to get ripped, biking isn't the way. It is still very good for the whole lower body and cario-vascular system. I should start doing it again myself. At any rate, Its a spectrum so you will see some bulk gain and some strength gain as well. On days when you can't ride, check the video for bulk building.



      If you can do more than 20 reps, add weight.

      yes but not your legs and again dependent on how many reps you do. Pushups will develop your pecs, triceps and front shoulders. crunches will develop your abs.

      For the pushups, you can mess around with how many reps you can do by varying the speed of the pushups, the position of your hands and the elevation of your feet. I sometimes do them with my feet on a chair.

      For the crunches, I would recommend skipping them and doing a different excersise. I'm not sure what it's called though...

      Hang from a pullup bar or tree branch and lift your legs up so that they are sticking straight out from your body, horizontaly. Don't bend them. It should be the same posture as if you were sitting on the ground with your legs flat out in front of you. This gives you the full extension of the muscles without putting stress on your lower back like a full sit up will. You can buy weights that will wrap around your ankles to make it more difficult if you get to too many reps.

      I may have already asked this and if so, I apologize for my horrible memory...

      About a month ago, I frequently passed two bikers. One rode a regular 12 speed-type "traditional style" bike. The other bike though interested me a great deal. It was lower to the ground and the pedals seemed almost horizontal with the guys butt.
      Does anyone know what the style of that bike is called?

      Oh, I see that. I'll try that whenever I can. All the trees in my yard are too high...and I have no pullup bar. But I'm sure there's something at the park that I can do that on.

      And I just took a shower, and saw that my quads were fucking ginourmous. I am thouroughly proud of myself.

      hehee, GRATS, SomeGuy!

      You made me think of my 14 year old son. He does a LOT of hiking at the places he's been staying. At our last visit he was obsessing over his calves. He's just a little overweight and has always had some "extra meat" on his bones which in itself can fascinate him. At that particular visit, though, he would sit down and relax and say 'See! NORMAL legs.' Then he'd tighten up his muscles and say 'Now HIDEOUS, ugly, funny legs!'
      The boy has HUGE calf muscles. I was VERY impressed.
      I tried to tell him muscles are attractive and a sign of an active, healthy life but he wasn't quite buying it

      Hope your workouts continue to go great and you see the results you want.

      Biking will give you some nice looking quads but wont give you much in the upper body department, although you will get leaner.

      sounds like a recumbent. good for people with touchy backs.

      biking is just... fun. also, cardio is underrated.

      That's called a Recumbent Bike, it's pretty fun. They work a completely different set of muscles than upright bikes, so they can be difficult to get used to. Also they're expensive.


      Also, biking isn't good for bulking up, it's good for toning your body.

      Try some uphill, and consider removing your bicycle seat

      I used to ride to the beach and back here, which is a 26 mile round trip. Had
      the pleasure of riding over the hills of the valley on a mountain bike (mongoose)
      with 24" tires, the same one I ride seatless today. You'll notice the difference if
      you're not used to constantly standing while riding as it is, and you'll notice it
      quickly enough.

      Don't ride that way if it feels even remotely unsafe, though. It's not worth
      landing yourself in the hospital over if you feel you can't control the bike as well.
