      Blacking Out

Um, I never paid any real thought to this. But for a few yrs. now, whenever I get up from laying down or even sitting down (in a relaxed position), my eyes completely black out. It's really random for how long they black out, sometimes it's only a few secs.; sometimes it's more than that. Even if I've laid down for only a couple of minutes, it nearly always happens.

I can remember a couple of instances in my life where it was for an extended period of time. Once, I wasn't feeling very well (had some kind of stomachache) and I felt like I was going to vomit. I was at the sink, but I couldn't vomit, just felt nausea. Well, my head was sort of bent down toward the sink, and when I lifted my head I blacked out. I remember going a bit crazy as I stayed blacked out, and running around for a few mins. (I was young, and panicked ) I went and laid down, then regained my vision slowly.

I remember looking this up online. I read somewhere it wasn't anything to be worried about and was related to low blood pressure. My parents said it wasn't anything to be worried about as well, but both sources aren't much reliable. Oh, and I can't go to a doctor or anything. (parents)

So yeah, is this normal? Something to be worried about?

Well the first thing I come up with is low bloodpressure, the thing you already figured out I have the same deal, if I have been sitting and rise too quickly I feel dizzy and my sight goes black or blurry. You could try to rise up more slowly and take deep breath before you rise.

If it is the bloodpressure there is nothing dangerous really, some people just have it like that

You made this thread because of what I said didn't you?

I heard it has to do with low blood sugar, and eating something should usually help.

Sounds like orthostatic hypotension. Do you drink a lot of caffeine or alcohol? Stop both and replace them with gatorade or something else that's high in various salts. You should consult your doctor for advice.

Yeh well my mother is a diabetic and I have a great chance to become one too so we do have low blood sugar AND low bloodpressure. Great combo
Not actually sure which one affects more, but eating surely helps since it raises your blood's sugar.

Firstly, thanks a lot for the advice Unelias. I'll try rising slowly and taking a deep breath.

I do not drink any caffeine or alcohol whatsoever.

Hurm. My mom has sugar problems and my dad has blood pressure problems, but as far as I (and doctor) know, I don't. So it has to do with low blood sugar as well? Hmm..

hmm.. well they both can cause nausea and dizzyness. When you relax then rise up quickly your brain doesn't get oxygen that fast, which can result minor dizzyness or lack of seeing for a brief time. In extreme cases total blackout and brief unconsciousness.

Hypoglygemia, or low bloodsugar usually indicates diabetes, but of course if you haven't eaten for a while your blood sugar amount is low. It can lead to same symptoms.

Hey, but don't worry! Low blood pressure is generally a good thing since it has been noted to give a more healthier life than high, since it keeps your bloodvessels in a lot better shape

On a sidenote : how old are you? The symptoms you told are very frequent on teenagers and are closely associated with growing up.

I'd not take random advice on such an issue.

If it's happening regularly and seemingly without reason (such as overworking your heart), it can be any number of things, from your heart/blood pressure to your brain to who knows what. Only a doctor will be able to figure it out with tons of analysis and all such. So if this worries you and if you can, I'd suggest getting checked up on the matter.

I've been to the doctor over this very problem. He called it Vertigo [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertigo_(medical)], but I think he meant orthostatic hypotension [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orthostatic_hypotension] because I was given the test where my blood pressure was taken while standing, sitting and laying down.
I was prescribed medication for it, but never really took it because it wasn't that severe and the meds made me WAY too sleepy. I'll be darned if I remember what the meds were though.

Pay attention to how quickly you rise and it should be significantly better.
If it worsens or other problems appear, have a serious heart to heart with your parents and try to see a doctor.

I think Ninja is right about this being just a headrush, it happens to me frequently and I have a healthy diet. Of course mine doesn't last minutes, more like 30 seconds.

Edit: Zhaylin is right too (sorry missed your post). It's not vertigo, it's totally different.

This happens to me too, but only when I've been sitting/lying down for awhile.

A few weeks ago it happened every time I stood up, like how you described it, but I figured it was just because I'd when I'd gotten a mole off I bled enough to make a difference. Not sure if that actually was the cause, but after a few weeks it went back to normal.

Next time you stand up, pretend you're 90 years old and you have to make sure your legs won't turn into jello before you try to stand on them. =)

Yeah, its just a headrush. Do you feel dizzy, or kinda half forget where you are? Its nothing to worry about. I actually enjoy them now, since I understand them. This one time, I had such a bad head rush, that I pushed the fridge door open, went blind, smoked my face on it, and fell to the floor for about 15 seconds untill I got up and reclaimed my sight. My dad was watching and thought I was having a seizure XD. Apparently I made a really funny face when it happened :]

I love it when that blackout head rush happens. People have always told me it is a result of low blood pressure from sitting or lying down for a while.

I hate getting head rushes. I've never had my field of vision disappear, but I definitely get light headed after sitting down or laying down for a long time (gaming or whatever)

Your case sounds pretty serious TS. I would see a doctor if I were you.

Well, the advice seems logical to me. Plus I researched and saw it on a few websites.

I've got this too, just not nearly as intense. I just occasionally see my vision blink to black when I stand up too quickly. My doctor called it orthostatic hypotension and said it was because my blood pressure randomly dropped after I moved too fast. It's basically harmless, but some people faint when they experience it. Sometimes it's a symptom of something else, but then again, yawning is a symptom of something else.

Don't worry about it, just move more slowly when you go to stand up.

If its happening pretty often as you mentioned I would suggest getting your blood pressure checked. I know a lot of people here are saying low BP however this is also a symptom of possible pre-hypertension. Zhaylin is on the right track, I'd monitor how quickly I rise from a relaxed position.

this happens to me all the time. i assumed it was a normal thing.

but when i have a really hot bath, when i get out my eyes black out for like a minute, and my eyes hurt too, and my ears ring for like 5-10 mins. oh, and i loose my balance too, i usually have to hold on to something to stay standing up.

so... this isnt as normal as i thought then?

to be honest, when it happens to me, i just let it be. but it sometimes helps to get up slowly. like, if you are lying down, sit up very slowly, then stand up very slowly.
