Fissured Tongue (aka cracked tongue)
Geographic and Fissured Tongue
I got this idea from the TJM thread. Sometimes when I eat hot food, my tongue will become geographic after a few minutes but it usually goes away overnight. The sides of my tongue are fissured and I have a few cracks along the top of it...nothing very noticeable or worthy worrying about but I had assumed this was always normal up until the point I did a bit of research on it last night. There is no current "cure" for either of these things and from what I understand, the tongue cracks could potentially increase as you get older.
How many of you all have geographic or fissured tongues?

I wish my tongue was a second brain
Oh my god.
This is kinda sick.
Thanks for the helpful replies guys.![]()
I think it affects 3 - 8% of the population.
It this condition painful?
Correction: 1/10 people have it. And no it's not painful, at least not to me. Hell I thought everyone had a bit of cracks in their tongues until I did some research into what geographic tongue was.Mine aren't noticeable, only if you put your eyes in my mouth

Hmmm I have a few horizontal 'cracks' in the more distal bit of my tongue, <1cm and only a few mm deep each, right in the middle. They don't hurt at all, but then again they aren't anything like those insane pictures. Never noticed if they change in size, but now I'll keep an eye on it![]()
wow.. it looks gross... i dontthink i could make out with someone who had a tongue like that... it wouold feel creepy...![]()

Well, this isn't nearly as bad as hairy tongue lol. Though I would advise everyone to put pictures like that in a spoiler if they post.
I've never really heard of this, tbh. Is there a cure or something? What causes it? Jeff, I wouldn't worry if it wasn't too bad.
