Apartment Dwellers. Question on Toxic smell

So the smell I posted about a few months ago is gone. The neighbors apologized and it was solved peacefully. They were smoking pot.

Now a new problem. A strong chemically smell has been happening almost every night for the past month. It's impossible to breath and I've narrowed the smell down to three possible apartments. Two of them have curtains blocking their windows out the front one of the guys seemed paranoid when I was waiting for someone to pick me up today.

From what I've read on meth labs, I think there might be one next door. I'm getting a sore throat and eyes are bothering me. I'm thinking of calling the police on this on. If it is meth, are there any health things on my end I need to take care of?

Does anyone agree with my theory it's a lab?

I hope not, they have a propensity to explode, these labs. Usually such an endeavour takes place in sheds...
Good on you to have solved the pot problem with your neighbours in an agreeable way, but if you're correct about the lab, you don't want to just show up on their doorstep. I think, you really should call the police, not something I recommend often.

At least where I live, this time of year folks start turning their heat on.

Lack of proper cleaning first can, I suspect, lead to a funky burning smell emanating from some apartments. Especially at night, when many people crank it up.

Also, if your neighbors smoke pot, it is possible they also smoke salvia? That stuff smells disgusting when it burns. But I doubt it could affect your eyes or throat from across apartments. Cigarettes reek too, that could just as easily be the culprit.

Calling the police to report what you think might (possibly) be meth lab is a very serious business.

To be honest, the symptoms you described might not even be related to what you're smelling. It's possible that they are, but even in that case, sending in a hazmat team would be pretty extreme, especially if what you're really dealing with is some chick burning too much incense or scented oil. That perhaps you're allergic too.

I know a person that can't be comfortable in so many places because common air fresheners cause her eyes to itch and feel as though she is unable to breathe.

If anything I would think getting your landlord involved first would make more sense than jumping to conclusions about what might be going on.

I spoke with the police at the station today. They want me to call them next time I experience the smell and will send a unit when I call, and if need be, the fire department also. They seemed concerned.

Oh, and I tried getting the manager involved. I'll see what I can do since my parents are friends with the landlord. But the police said they would definitely check out the smell.

I don't think it's heater. I've had my heater on before and it's never smelled like that

Usually I would also rather say, keep a cool head and think it through, acatalephobic, but I can't quite imagine an activity done safely within an apartment block which emits the sort of fumes he describes. They are not the same neighbours smoking the pot, right?

I wouldn't get involved with any other person's drug business personally, if they don't harm or severely disturb me - except - I'd suspect a meth-lab.
Something which might fly around my ears one fine night and I'd suffocate or the place burns down.
I mean - I hope they'll just scare a harmless chemistry student with a home-project half to death and convince her to install proper air-filters for whatever legal experiments she's doing.
Maybe it was an OCD person doing some extreme house-cleaning, suspecting Ebola or something. But if so - you're loosing nothing by ringing the alarm-bells. Try to stay as anonymous as you can, not to get a "bad reputation", no matter the outcome.
Let us know, what comes of it.

There is an apartment building across from me that has people coming and going all times. I think it's them. It's happening mostly when the smell happens and that complex does have a history of drug problems. If it happens again tonight, I'll call the police.

Right. Or at least, I don't think so.

I've smelled pot as I said. It has a distinct skunk smell to it. I also had different health problems to those fumes. To the chemical one I also get a headache and heart rate suddenly increase. I'm a healthy 22 year old and work out about three or four times a week but I don't think the heart problems are related to the exercise. Te smell also makes me feel like my heart is about explode if that makes sense.

If I smell it again, I'll also get a suitcase packed up and see if I can stay at my parents for the night.

Found the source: Neighbor 's Hvac unit. I'll talk with the manager in the morning and see my doctor in case the fumes
      are poisonous.

      hope it isn't meth chemicals

The guy is probably just a low level weed dealer or something. You absolutely sure that the pot smoking neighbors aren't just trying to mask the pot smell with lots of cheap incense or aerosol fragrances? I would highly advise against calling the police unless you absolutely think that they are cooking meth or whatever. Police will only ruin peoples lives with fines, probation, jail, wipe out finances of families, etc. I had an apartment neighbor that also heavily smoked pot and I did same thing and said hey, you smoking too much pot and you may wanna light some incense or whatever. I however did not really care because i smoked pot before and i just didn't want my neighbor to get caught up. Well the neighbor was burning the very cheaply made incense sticks constantly. It smelled like a krishna temple next door, ha ha.

I just simply said dude, use better incense with non toxic ingredients and we will all be better off. He did and it worked.

I do think you may be right about it being meth with strong chemical odors that burn your eyes. Chemical Smells

A telltale sign of a meth lab is a powerful chemical smell.

The odor of an active meth lab may smell like:

      Paint thinner or vanish smell
      Ether or a "hospital smell"
      Sour or vinegary smell
Ammonia-like smell (like the smell of window cleaner, fertilizers or even cat urine)

If you think there is a meth lab there, then walk to the apartment leasing office and have them handle it. If it is a meth lab and you call the police and the tenants that you called and complained about find out if was you that ratted out their meth operation and caused them to get felonies, lose lots of cash and drugs, and go to jail, then the may want to harm you. Just tell the leasing agent what is up and let them handle it. meth has ruined the world, so I feel you if it is meth.

Good luck, and remember, don't be a snitch to the police unless your life is in danger. That is really all the police are good for. Besides that they are basically state sanctioned tax agents that suck their citizens finances dry with tickets, speed trapping, red light cameras, etc. At least this is how I feel about the police in Texas. Dallas PD are cool, but the rest are scum sucking bottom feeders that attach themselves to your life like a parasite. Handle your problems on your own when you can safely and peacefully.
