      Dream invading waking life?

I had an experience where I woke up at about 2am (about 4 and a half hours after going to sleep) to the feeling of a warmth on my chest, and it felt really warm... almost hot. I instantly assumed it was an animal and instinct kicked in. I smacked it off, rolled onto my stomach and lifted myself to get out of bed, and as I was getting up I felt the 'warmth' move up my leg back to my chest. Of course I smacked it off again and lunged for the lightswitch then opened the door and stood in my door way holding my cane incase it tryed to come at me. I stood in my doorframe frozen in complete silence for what must have been two or three minutes. I looked in my closet, under my bed, behind the chesterfield... everywhere... but there was nothing. After my heart slowed a bit I looked down at my leg and chest expecting to see small claw marks from what I thought was the animal but there was nothing... not even red or anything. I went into the living room and slept on the couch and in morning checked my room again and there was nothing.

I know this wasn't a dream, or at a complete dream... since the second 'attack' happened after I was already awake and heading for the door.

Was this a partial dream? Like some parts of my dream world leeching into reality? Because I don't remember having any dreams that night but there was nothing in my room.

      What say ye? Dream, poltergiest?

Of course, your mind might have been dreaming, but you couldn't see the dream, you only felt it?

      Not even a little bit.

That doesn't really make sense though, cause I was awake.

As in, your mind didn't detect you moving, so it continued to dream, while you could see and feel the waking world.

      In essence... reverse sleep paralysis?

Instead of the mind waking and the body still being asleep, my body awoke but my mind was still dreaming (to some extent).

If you still had the claw marks on you, that would have been pretty epic .

Yeah anyway, when you wake up suddenly your mind is still partly in sleeping mode, so things can get pretty weird. I once woke up from a dream where I was talking to my friend, only to continue hear him talking like he was right next to my bed. Not sure whether it was a false awakening or not since I fell asleep right after.

Yes, the visual and mobile part of your mind was still operating, but the rest was still asleep.

Sounds like a pretty extreme hallucination to me, probably caused by the sudden awakening. Just as you can wake up and still be in SP, you can wake up and still be experiencing dream-like hallucinations. Although this is common, physical manifestation is rare. You should feel lucky.

Some kinda similar stuff happens to me. All of a sudden in class or when I'm laying in bed, I'll get the rapid thought that I'm gonna get hit by a bus, getting slammed, and then jumping backwards in my seat and disturbing the entire class or rocking the entire bed. I'm not exactly what's going on, as I don't think about buses, or even cars, on a daily basis.

      From Wisegeek:

Sometimes tactile hallucinations are transient and might occur as part of hypnopompic or hypnogogic experiences. These are any hallucinations that happen just before waking or falling asleep, respectively. A person might feel that someone or thing has touched or exerted pressure on him. Alternately, the sensation of falling and hitting the ground may be tactile, and it really can feel as though a physical experience occurred. These hallucinations are fairly common, and many people will experience at least one in a lifetime.
I've never experienced any sort of hallucination while waking up but apparently it's possible and IMO that's probably what you've experienced... The only part that's weird to me is how you experienced it a second time while up and moving, but I suppose if you weren't completely awake yet that could still be the cause. I don't know how long that sort of thing can last into what we assume is consciousness.

I once put on a ring in a dream, and I woke up still feeling it. It's possible things like this can happen, I think it's not being fully awake and still feeling the dreamworld.

I remember a dream where I got shot and could feel the bullet in my body. Was a horrible pain that I felt during 1 or 2 mins after waking up.

I once woke to the scene of a number of "evil monks" slowly walking through my bedroom door. However, I was experiencing hypnopompic sleep paralysis, so I was aware that I was still partially in the dream state. The monks faded when I regained muscle control.

I've never had a hallucination after getting up, though. That sounds both terrifying and awesome in equal measure.

I once slept in (alarm clock failed). My brother walked into my room and started encouraging me to wake up since I was late for school at that time. The only problem? Instead of hearing what he actually said, I heard what my mind was thinking on it. I was extremely confused when what he said was so random, but I still responded to it accordingly anyhow, since my mind couldn't yet grasp the concept of this most likely not being true sounds. Later that day when I thought about it, it made less sense. Why would he have said something so random.

The only conclusion I could draw was that I was hallucinating.
