Ive had dreams where my neighborhood is engulfed in mile-high pillars of white/yellow fire. I think, generally speaking, apocalyptic dreams shock us so much, is because there is no escape from an armageddon situation. They somewhat represent an inescapable situation

What dreaming does is give us the fluidity to enter into other worlds by destroying our sense of knowing this world. - Carlos Castaneda

I also remember one where there were loads of mini tornadoes cropping about the place ( like really small ones the size of people)
and my entire town was in a state of panic ,while kids were playing tag and messing about with them, but what they didnt know was that as soon as one of these whirling cones touched you you were shredded into a red cloud in a fraction of a second.

I have had dreams about a zombie outbreak taking place in the World, ending all human societies, altough not destroying Earth itself.

They are scary, but at the same time exciting and enjoyable.

iv had 2 recently (last 2 weeks) that i remember. But i know i have had them many more times earlier, but i cant really remember these, so il stick to the last 2.

First one was a nuclear/fire storm kinda dream. we were outside walking and suddenly a big mushroom kinda cloud (just like a nuclear bomb would make) came up behind us. i could clearly see that the orange/red light from the bomb or whatever came towards us, and i felt totally helpless. i remember thinkin about my family and how i would miss them. i dont remember anything more after the "firewave" or whatever reached us.

second one i had like a week after. it started out just like i had planed my next day. going to the paintshop and get some stuff i needed for the next day. i even dreamt that i had to go back to the shop cuz i forgot to get a gasmask(wich i were planing on do the next day). next thing i can remember in the dream was that the big news was that there was a big tidal wave or what u call it coming. experts were talkin about some bubbleling in the ocean that was going to "explode" or something in just a few hours and send a huge (500meter tall) wave over the world. i remember that my first thought was to head up to the mountains so that hopefully we could get away from it. up there i met a dosen other ppl including my dad. they had built somekinda tent that we would stay in. Suddenly we felt the wave was coming, there was a really weird sound, and it got VERY windy. i allmost blew out of the tent but mangaged to stay inside, i remember holding on to my dad. and the fact that i had him there with me made it all much easier.

after a little while we knew the wave was away, and we looked down from the mountains and saw that the whole city had been ripped away, there were pieces of buildings everywhere. we whent down and started to build it back up again.. but as i was down there, i felt a "second armageddon" or whatever happening, this time it was something that i couldnt see, but i think there was a voice saying that now it was my turn. and after that i woke up.

what i thought was most scary about the last dream was that so much of what i was going to do the next day happend in the dream.. i remember thinkin of it as i came out of the paint shop and found out i had forgotten to buy a gasmask, so i had to go back in (just like in the dream). i actually asked my dad how tall the mountain here was, just to be sure if we could survice a 500meter tall wave. (its like 700meters or sumthin, so guess it would have worked fine). He told me he had a dream that was very similar to this one some years ago, but he chose another mountain we have here, wich is a little taller.

      kinda freaky stuff

I think you have being watching to much war of the worlds and and deep impact but apart from that, that really is freaky.

I had one like the first one i had it about a month ago i keep a dream diary. I was walking down the road listening to my music when it started to cut out and i stood trying to clean the disc when i looked up to see this clock tower had stopped everything had stopped then i throw my CD player on the ground and then looked at the clock and as i did the time had changed and just thinking about it now i missed the first sign. I started to run, run faster and faster untill i was at the town center of this place i was at, not to sure if i had been there before in my life, to find all the people were around this radio and the radio was saying how all lucid dreamers in the town must go to the town hall and then i felt a wave of somthing hit me. (it always happens to me when am going lucid) I went to the town hall to find a man stood there with a gun in his hand saying that we must fight and stand our ground against the invaders. I had no idea wtf was going so i thought ad ask the question i said
"who are the invaders" everyone turned around and started to look at me and the guy said
"its nice to see you Jankai its good to have you on our side this time."
Then it hit me i had been here before in a past dream i was sent to destroy it as a test which was set by my DC (ANAK).
The man explained that the invaders were a group of people which were able to control the elements and that we must fight them off at the shore.
After a long chat we all got the shore after this man opened up a portal to get there. we waited for about 10 - 15 seconds before a wave of fire and thunder hit us and we were all wiped out apart from me and this guy and then he said well better look next time and we were set on fire the end

I've had recurring dreams about giant worms Dune-style eating cities.

It was all like a movie, though, 3rd person type.

I had dream where I was in my room reading a comic. It's a nice day outside and the sun is shining through my window. My mom is healthy and driving. Everything is going fine and then something happens that makes me go to my window and look out. There's a blinding whit light engulfing everything in existense, and it gets closer. I run to the other side of my room, and all I see is white and me being disintigrated. Messed up. It was like I was seeing an alternate reality me dying.
      To be continued . . . . .

I've had a non-lucid dream of the type. Wasn't exactly apocalyptic but involved demons breaking loose and eating people. And for some reason I had a little sister, but i don't. It's kinda long so I'll email it if anyone wants to hear it. And I had another weird dream last night...

Yeah, I've had those more now than in the past [since Ijoined DV I've noticed that the number's gone up some, but that's a coincidence]. But for some reason, I'm always calm throughout them and rarely am I afraid [only once can I recall I was afraid] but when I wake up feeling fine... Only dreams with zombies trying to 'convert' me scare me or something that dark

Awesome this thread is still going! It's crazy how many people have apocalyptic dreams - some of the dreams people have posted here scare the bejesus out of me!

I have had multiple dreams that the world is ending and/or dreams of impending doom.

The one I remember the most specifically is realizing the US was being overran by some sort of army at night....My family and I were trying to get out of town driving quickly across the dark road as I saw soldiers treking through fields.

I looked up to the sky to see a yellow moon and a few different nukes ripping across the sky in different directions.

The dreams aren't so scary as the intense strange emotions they often give me.

for the past 3 years ive been having dreams about the world ending and can still remeber them all ive looked for answers as to why this could be but could not find any so i thought i would put a post up to see if anyone has ever had dreams like this ive talked to friends i know and none of them have ever had dreams like these i was wondering if anyone would know what these dreams mean or why i would be having them

the first dream i remeber having was i was watching the news and nuclear power plants were metling down and everyone was losing power and riots were breaking out

the second was i was on a beach at night with alot of people and we were looking at what looked like neon blue and pink strings in the sky they seemed very far away and were making me feel nervous then there was this giant flash of light and everyone started running into a beach house and i grabbed this kid to take him in the house and then there was another flash of light and i dont remeber the rest

the third dream i had i was trying to go somewhere but i was very dangerous to travel and people were going crazy and then i found this group of people led by a guy with a beard who thought they knew a place where you could get clean water so i joined them and we eneded up finding a cave that had clean water but i didnt stay with them very long and left to go where ever i was traveling to

the dream i had last night me and my gf were traveling through the country looking for food there were alot of farms around and we were hungry we tryed stealing food from a farm and a farmer and his two sons caught us and said if they caught us on anyones farm again they would kill us later on down the road we saw military vehicles that were in some kind of accident but didnt want to talk to us we kept walking down the road and found an abbandon house that belonged to and old lady and found a whole bunch of honey in jars in her house we spent the night there but were afraid that the farmer we stole from was going to come to kill us thats all i can remeber

and all these dreams always have people ive never seen before i had a few others but there just usally me hinding in different buildings waiting for a safe time for when i can leave usally im hiding from somekind of disturbance outside of the the building useally related to military or rioting people

      I had one sometime ago.
My neighbor and I were walking around our town and then we were transported to NY, and it was HELL there. Like buildings were falling, people screaming, fire, all that stuff. So we started running and ended up in some construction area, and he and I got seperated. So after that everything get all dark to night time, I pass a few randomly placed basketball courts in the construction site, and then alien ships start to kind of land etc. Everyone goes crazy, and I start to run again. Dust and crap is flying EVERYWHERE, and all of a sudden I'm right in front of a falling water tower. I look up and it's making this huge billowing noise; I woke up to my cat pushing stuff off my dresser, including some really big stuff (Making loud billowing noises).

      Lol, yeah. >_>

I've had a couple of dreams, one fairly recently, where the moon swelled and slowly fell from the sky to the earth. It became translucent the closer it got. The last dream was non-lucid but so vivid and terrifying. I was outside in the dar during winter. When I saw the moon approaching I fell to my knees in the snow in terror.

Very, very rarely. But when I do, I love them.
Love it because it refreshes me somehow, makes me happy. Those dreams are the complete opposite of my grey and boring everyday life.

      EDIT:
My apocalyptic dreams are always post-apocalyptic though, so maybe thats why I feel so good about them? In these find myself walking around (underground or inside buildings) in city ruins, walking around with strangers and wearing filthy cloths all over my body and wearing a rifle/semi-automatic carbine over my shoulder. Feels good somehow...

      Talking

I also have apocalyptic dreams (About twice a month). When I am in them, I usually just want to get away from it all. But when I wake up, I think it is the best experience ever :p . That probably because I know I'm safe once I'm awake.

Wow that's pretty often to have apolcalyptic dreams! Maybe it's a reliable dreamsign you could take advantage of.

I agree that it's a good feeling when you wake up and realize it was all just a horrible dream.

They are never lucid when they happen, for some reason I just don't register that I could be dreaming - which is strange because you'd think I'd do a reality check or something.

Does anyone else have apocalyptic dreams, either lucid or nonlucid?
Yeah, I had one 6 months ago. I don't remember how it began, but I found myself in my school, but it had been reduced to ruins. There were old school descs and brick stones scattered everywhere, and all the trees were grey and had lost their leaves. A lot of people from different grades in my school sat together in a room where one wall was missing. If you looked out where the wall had been you could see a grey, misty landscape, it looked like a battlefield from WWI.

The most scary thing in the dream were the desperate feelings. Many students had formed couples and went away to lose virginity. People cried and kissed each other.

A girl who I don't use to talk to that much comes and says she wants to talk to me. We get out of the room where the other students were, and sat on a ruined wall. Then a rusty old car drives down to the parking, with my maths teacher in it. We goes back to the room he tells everybody to hide under something made of wood or fabric if there is a nuclear explosion. Then, I see a flashing light which fades away. I see the mushroom cloud and the shockwave blasting its way through the landscape. Thein it hits me, and I awaken.

The dream went in a damp colour, like old colour photos from the 40's.

Although I haven't had a dream about it a month ago I watched a BBC Horizons documentry called 'the end'. It had 5 different scenarios about how the world would end. I have to admit after watching it I was a bit sad and disturbed... anyway the 5 ways were:

A huge 'super volcano' errupting and sending molten ash and rock flying for thousands of metres, then all of the dust and ash blocking out suns rays, thus everything like plants etc. died and it got cold and we died.

The second one was that there was a giant meteor heading towards the earth and we used nuclear weapons to try and hit it but that just smashed it up into many pieces, making huge crators and destroying cities etc.

The third one was that there was some deadly virus that killed people (think SARS, Avian Influenza etc.). It was some sort of influenza that spread because of one sick passanger in an aircraft. You died in a few days and it was super contagious etc. and even after borders were sealed etc. people were still infected. Like a less gruesome more realistic version of 28 days and 28 weeks later.

The forth scenario wasn't really the end of the world, but a huge volcano/mountain range split in two causing a massive landslide on an island. A giant tsunami was formed and it washed huge cities away etc. Think The Day After Tommorow type of thing.

The fifth one (and my favourite may I add) was that scientists were making a giant particle accelerator. When they turned it on, two atoms collided and created a strangelet. A stranglet is a particle that basically turns whatever it touches into strangelets, and it turned into a giant black hole type of thing and consumed the earth. Very spectacular!

I think these sort of dreams are the scariest! Biological weapons or an outbreak of a deadly virus would be an awful end to the world - and there's nothing you can do to stop it.

had a Nuke dream a year or so ago. Waaaay too real. The explosion was so vivid, and I was with a group of spectators. We saw the ion cloud pass over us in the atmosphere, then our faces began to burn like we had been in the sun for too long. Eyes itched. We were miles away from the blast - it was on the horizon - but the explosion stretched out into the atmosphere in a blue-green bulb, miles across. The energy pulse rippled over our heads. We all knew we had been radiated badly. nightmarish, but still very rewarding in some way. Maybe just waking up and realizing that it didn't happen.

Its surprising to see so many nuclear dreams. Oddly ive never had one despite having many apocalyptic dreams. Twice they involved fire engulfing the sky and coming towards myself and many other people trying to flee.

I always used to think these kinds of dreams were remnants of primitive experiences, but that theory doesnt work with all the nuclear war dreams so many people have
