      No sleep = fast REM?

I had a lot of school work I had to finish yesterday and didn't get to bed until about noon the next day (today). I was completely exhausted but woke up at around 3pm so I only got a little sleep. Whats weird is that once I woke, I recalled two very vivid dreams I had although they were not lucic. I looked over at my clock and was surprised to find it had only been 3 hours of sleep.

Is it normal to go through REM sleep so quickly when your body is deprived?

      No, it is not.

You can dream during non-rem sleep, so the fact that you recalled a dream does not serve as evidence that you were actually in REM sleep.

In fact, of the stages 1-2-3-4-REM, stages 3 and 4, aka slow wave sleep or SWS, take precedence over REM when it comes to fulfilling sleep after a deprivation period. Generally speaking, when you get stages 1,2,3,4 filled, but don't get your REM requirement, then you will experience REM rebound and end up getting some of that REM sleep out of the way the next time that you sleep. However, if you're even more severely sleep deprived, missing out on your slow wave sleep, then those stages will take precedence over REM. Essentially, since you missed out on an entire night's sleep, and then got 3 hours, chances are that you spent that time in NREM sleep, and not REM.

Hmm, I thought it was normal. I'm looking at something called polyphasic sleep (or uberman's sleep), which is where u take short naps thoughout the day istead of getting a good nights sleep. The link I'm looking up at polyphasic sleep FAQ, though not sure how scientific it is. But most sites I looked up say that its probaly not a good idea to sleep 2 hours a day, but the results do seem that when you do sleep your sleep cycle is more compressed. I had quite a few times where I taken a nap during the day because I wasn't getting much sleep, and I had pretty vivid dreams during these short maybe 30 minute naps, I guess that could be in the non-REM stages or it could be that your sleep cycle is more compressed so you get to both the fourth stage of non-REM and REM faster. I'm not really an expert or anything though, maybe try to goggle polyphasic sleep or uberman's sleep and see if those experiences sounded simular to your own?
