How do you stay motivated to lucid dream?

I've been trying for several months now, using different techniques. I had one or two DILDs at first, but the dream quality was poor, and since then I haven't had anything remotely close to a LD experience. I've heard of the fantastic things one can do in lucid dreaming, and that has mostly been motivation enough. But I've also read about people who have tried for over a year without success. I also really love my sleep and I have to get up very early in the morning, so I hate to sacrifice any for WBTB and such.

Sleep loss wouldn't be an issue if I were rewarded with lucid dreams every so often, but having been so long, I'm starting to get discouraged. The alarm rings in the morning and most of the time I just want to roll over and go back to sleep, since the alternative is half an hour of mantras or visualization or keeping engaged with an anchor, then failing and either falling asleep or being too alert and spending another 30-60 minutes just trying to fall asleep normally.

I really want to lucid dream. But I also want to be successful. Am I psyching myself out, expecting failure and so receiving it? Or should I try something different to start and then get into different techniques? Thanks...

Don't lose faith, I'm no expert by any means but keep trying, find what works for you. I find DILD works best for me, after my first real LD I wanted to have one every night, it doesn't work like that I soon found out, I just kind of became laid back about it and took a "if it happens it happens" approach. I find that I used to LD once per week, I'm now having 2 or 3 and long ones too, last night I went to the pub but just drank orange juice as I was driving, I had a long and amazing LD when I slept, dunno if OJ can spur lucidity but I'm gonna try it again. Good luck and just let it happen. It'll come.

Try keeping a lucid journal along side your dream journal (i have one that i type up each night before i sleep). It only has to be a few lines. Just go over what you did during the day to help you gain lucidity (reading up on tutorials, other people's experience etc, doing RCs and so on). Then write about what you are going to try when trying sleep (either trying to practice MILD, or imagining what your dream world would look like as you fall asleep etc). Then the most important thing, write about how you have improved from your last night. It can be something pretty trivial like, "I remembered 1 more dream than the night before" or "I remember more about this dream than any other". If you can keep seeing that you're improving, that will keep you motivated (at least it has for me). Also planning on what you want to achieve when you can become good at lucid dreaming might also give you something to strive for and so motivate you =]

Admittedly, i'm not motivated 24/7 (then again, who is?). Throughout the day, I daydream of things I'm interested in doing- whether it be something awesome that happened in a video game, a favourite book, a fantasy movie; almost always fantasy. And also, when it comes to an end of a particular series that i loved watching/reading/playing, I'm just not quite ready to let go of the characters that I because attached to or the story line, I think about recreating moments or continuing the story.
You could also think back of the reasons why you wanted to first start lucid dreaming. Also, check out Mancon's motivational guide!

Are you sure? As FOrceez said already, you might want to take a deep breath and think quietly for a few minutes about whether this is the thing for you. Then, when you've reminded yourself that this is a thing you want to do...

Am I psyching myself out, expecting failure and so receiving it?
      Yup.

Or should I try something different to start and then get into different techniques?
Probably. But instead of trying new techniques, why not consider trying less often? With the occasional exception of a month or so of deep immersion, I usually limit my LD'ing sessions to once or twice a week. Given that I like/need sleep (full-on LD's exhaust me), that I have waking life matters to deal with, and that, as you've discovered, making the attempt every morning might reduce it from an exciting event to a tedious routine. You might consider trying to LD just once or twice a week, and make a big deal of it -- prepare all day the day before, make the WBTB an important moment, and not a nuisance, and when you set your intent make it mean something (much easier if the "dive" is a weekly event rather than a daily trial).

LD'ing is all about attitude...if your attitude shifts to negative, you'll never get in.

P.S. Forgot to mention: to build and maintain that attitude, you might consider following Quietus' excellent suggestion -- it'll help.

It's hard for me sometimes too. I won't have any LDs for ages, then suddenly I start having gobs of them. It's kinda hit-and-miss for me, it seems like if I try too hard, they don't come and I lose interest for a while. Then one day (usually when I have a chance to really sleep in or have a long nap) I'll have a good one and it sparks more for a while. I guess if I had any advice for you, or rather what works for me sometimes, is try to change up your sleep patterns. Or sometimes just sleeping in a different room. I get LDs alot when I'm on vacation, something about a different bed, different place, different sleep cycle etc.

Hope it helps and good luck Sanctum.

I was going to suggest the same thing. This should be a source of joy and excitement. Set aside a special night for lucid dreaming, and make it an event. Make it something to look forward to. Do something novel, such as sleeping in a different room, like Ophelia suggested. Come up with some ritual that excites you. Read through an old dream journal, watch an inspiring movie, go to bed early, sleep in a three-piece pinstripe suit. Make it a date with yourself that you are excited about all day.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I might end up limited my lucid dream attempts to the weekends. It gives me something to look forward to and doesn't disrupt sleep needed for school. Hopefully I'll be on track to LD soon! Reading this is motivating in itself.

I'm still going to sleep, right? I usually meditate before sleeping, so while my mind is still calm, I lie in bed with intentions of becoming lucid. But those dry spells do come around now and again. Just keep journaling!

Journaling, journaling, journaling.. I used to preach this to newbies, adoptees etc. Excellent advice. In fact, sometimes even the plain fact of verbally reciting to someone in person what you dreamt the night before will solidify the dream recall in your mind, preparing your subconscious for a lucid dream the very next night. Fun fact: whenever I haven't had an LD for some time, if I randomly say to myself, "Oh my, I haven't had an LD in a while," I will have and LD that night, nearly every time. Does that power of suggestion work for anyone else? Just curious.

Haha, actually, I had trouble staying motivated before I had my first lucid dream.

But after I had my first lucid dream? That sweet, amazing 5 seconds where I looked out over that foggy field and was able to breathe it all in over that long, long 5 seconds?

I didn't have to try to stay motivated. I couldn't think of anything I wanted more than to be able to be in my dreams, conscious, for longer than that 5 seconds. I wanted to be there forever. I wanted to explore, and create art from my dreams. Use them as a way to meet people and go to places that I've never been and that, in some cases, don't even exist.

I wanted to fly, run, and jump, all at immense heights and speeds. Things I can't do in real life. Paint a canvas on thin air. I wanted to do anything that I wanted, anywhere I that I wanted. Every day.

That's how I stay motivated. Haha.

Well, I couldn't possibly lose motivation for lucid dreaming TBH But I also do it completely differently. You say the you want to roll over because the alternative is half an hour of reciting mantra's and such. You should know that it isn't required to LD. Say it for a few minutes before going to bed. Don't just recite it in your head, really feel your intention behind it. The power of a mantra isn't reciting it a lot, it is the intention behind it. If you REALLY want to LD, and you are sure you are able to (and yes you are), then they will come. As for techniques, you sound like a type for techniques like DEILD, that don't take a lot of preparation. I also recommend All Day Awareness, which is a form of DILD. It can easily be combined with any other techniques. WBTB-WILD may not be a good idea if you have to get up early. Also, I do think Dream Journals are a good thing, but I am personally a bit lazy, and I prefer to spend my wakings on DEILD. Hope this helps, good luck!

Keep in mind that you are only unable to lucid dream until the next time you fall asleep, so lucid dreams are never actually far away for you to achieve.
Nobody has put a curse on you that makes you completely unable to get lucid dreams, it's completely likely that you will have a lucid dream tonight - or the night after that.
Just keep trying, but make sure you don't feel frustrated about it.
Personally I believe that the quest for lucid dreams should always be fun and exciting, and every time you try you will have statistically better and better chances.

Think of it like rolling a dice, where 6 represents you getting lucid.
If you keep throwing that dice over and over then you are bound to get a 6 after a few tries.
It's the same with lucid dreaming - maybe not necessarily the same odds, but fundamentally the exactly same thing.

I always learn more and mroe, techniques and i listen to many videos, i read journals of other people, i experiment my self, m editate, u know you need to stick on the lucid dreaming subject then you are automatically motivated.

WBTB is really good if you have free day (time...) so dont blame it lol, there are other techniques, i suggest MILD with mantra to keep your self reminded that you are falling asleep.. till u get to the point that you are in Sleepy paralysis, then boom your on the lucid world, so mainly find whats best for u.

I've been working on LD's since 2009. I've had five. FIVE.

I've lost motivation so many times due to some personal struggles I've had to go through. I finally decided to get medicated, and the medication has improved my energy and motivation levels. I now live and breathe lucid dreaming. It's my first thought when I wake up, and my first thought when I go to sleep - the same as the time I had my first few LD's. I haven't had one in three years, but I'm not giving up.

I stay motivated by thinking about all the fun things I can do. I stay motivated by reading about lucid dreams other people have. I read every book I can to further my understanding on what dreams - lucid or not - are.

For the first time in years I haven't lost motivation quickly. During my previous struggles, I'd become interested again, but lose motivation because my thoughts were telling me "You can't, so just give up". I finally decided I'd had enough of that.

When this happens to me ( losing sleep due to LD efforts without pay off ), I keep myself couraged with knowing that the next night I'll sleep much better because I'll be more tired. I don't find spending the even 30-60 minutes of prepping for LDing that bothersome anymore, because if the prepping pays off with a lucid dream, I feel much more energetic, happy and rejuvenated after waking up. It feels like Iv slept 7-8 hours even if I really slept only 6.

Also for general encouragement remember exactly what it feels like to become lucid. The feeling of no rules, no boundaries, total freedom, endless possibilities. Being a god in your own universe. No one to judge your decisions. No fear. The excitement.
