      Awake or asleep?

Hello, after maybe a month of lurking around in the dreamworld, I've been getting alot more interest to it. But sometimes I have a very wierd, scary and sometimes interesting problem. I question myself if I'm dreaming or if I'm awake, sometimes IRL, I think I'm dreaming.. Is this dangerous and could it cause me to get mentally ill or something? It feels very wierd and I appreciate all replies..
      Sincerely, SlickPot.

I suppose the answer to that might depend on the person giving it. That person being a doctor, pyschologist, fellow dreamer, or just some random dude like me. Ask yourself this - are you sober? Or do you partake in alcohol or other mind-altering substances? It's hard to answer without knowing that. I can only give you a story. I introduced a close friend of mine to the concepts of lucid dreaming, and the idea of performing reality checks. He became very good at lucid dreaming. Years passed and later in life we found each other again. I asked him if he was still doing those things and he said no, the reality checks got to be too much for him. Too much in the sense that he felt himself questioning reality all the time. He became a bit annoyed that he would look at a rose bush, or a street sign, or anything, and question if he was dreaming soooooo much. It also messed with him mentally probably as he gripped with what that all means on a subconscious level. I don't know if that helps, but I've found that some of the alternatives to reality checks (e.g. practicing critical awareness) might be more helpful, and they sound like they would be more helpful to someone going through what you describe. Search for awareness techniques on the forum and you'll see what I mean.
