I might have discovered something that helps with DILD

So last night I had my second lucid dream since two years by using a mantra before sleeping. During the month I joined this website, I've been researching lucid dreaming and i've been working on trying to get a DILD or FILD. I've tried to be aware and not do RC that much often that it becomes a mechanical thing. And somehow the only two nights which I managed to get a LD where the only two nights I slept over at a friends house xD. Do you guys have any idea why? Does it make me more aware that I'm sleeping with other people or something? Also, on those nights I slept kinda late, but then again when I sleep late and I'm not sleeping with others then not only does it not work, my dream recall just becomes terrible. Also I talked with another 2 of my friends who LD and they said they got a few DILDs sleeping over at a friends house too.

Maybe you guys can try this too and post the results here :p

Interesting idea. Just yesterday I listened to an interview with Robert Waggoner. In it he said folks had reported to him that both dream recall and lucidity were increased while traveling or sleeping in an unfamiliar environment. His hypothesis was that our overall vigilance is increased when we sleep in an unfamiliar place.

As for the presence of other people who are not normally present while we sleep, maybe the same thing- increased vigilance. Maybe something more...

My wife had an intense experience before we were married. She was traveling with 2 friends and they ended up sleeping on a couch and floor at another friends place. My wife and one of her friends awoke simultaneously from the same dream. They had also been aware in the dream that they were dreaming together.

Years later, she and I had recently bought our first house. We renovated then moved in and discovered that the house was haunted or something. Bad vibe, poltergeist activity, strange history of the previous occupants that might have involved murder, etc. Normally I don't really put much stock in that kind of thing, but the experience was pretty convincing, to the point that I memorized the Lord's prayer and recited it a lot. It got to be such a habit that I would recite it in nightmares, too. One night, my wife and I both had the same nightmare at the same time. This demon-guy was hunting us. As he closed in on us, I said the prayer. He sent one last wave of evil at us and disappeared. My wife and I both woke up at the same time, and she said, "How did you do that?" No more problems after that.

Anyway, I said all that to say this- I think there is some shared space in the dreamtime. It might be cool to get a group together to deliberately explore the idea. Maybe rent a cabin somewhere for a weekend.

I read somewhere that when you sleep somewhere new or somewhere you never usually sleep what happens is that when you go to sleep theres a part of you that stays slightly awake. ..its your bodys natural survival instinct.....this doesnt happen when you sleep at home because you know its your home a place that your used to.
Maybe also try sleeping maybe somewhere else in your house? Mayeb sleeping anywhere apart from your bed like the couch/sofa may also help?

What both of you guys are saying makes complete sense! My actual first ever lucid dream 2 years ago was one I had while I was in a hotel room with my dad. Also, the first night which I slept together with my friends was actually in my own house. It's just that I needed to sleep in my sisters room with another friend. Maybe the unfamiliar environment thing worked again and caused me to have a lucid dream. Maybe this actually works and can be used as a boost to DILD after all. When I have time, I'll try sleeping in another room in my house and see if it works.

Oh, and I'm also not sure if there should be another person with you, because I'd feel pretty normal sleeping anywhere in my house without someone else there to be honest. I think it might also be the feeling of having someone there next to you.

We should conduct an experiment. We should gather statistics on lucidity and dream recall based on where you sleep and with who. This could end up being one of the most usefull techniques for beginners, seeing as it's literally the only thing that worked for me so far

You've got me thinking. My wife will be away tonight. Since I am used to having her there, maybe her absence will have the same effect as the presence of someone who is not normally there. I'll make an extra effort to use this opportunity, though one success doesn't prove the rule.

I have a feeling this could be a great technique for beginners, and I would bet some new romances might sprout up, too.

Great! keep us updated with your results. I'm actually creating a survey right now, I'll post it in the research section of this forum, maybe we can gather some statistics this way.

Sending your wife away every time you want to lucid dream doesn't sound like a very good technique though

Good point- In any case, she might accept that it's better to be sent away than for me to sleep with other people. I accept that it's not a real option to invite anyone else into my bed, even in my dreams

I appreciate the joke, but twice in the last week I've been overtly propositioned for sex in my dreams. Both times I declined, because of my marital vows. Frankly, this surprised me. I thought that the dream world was consequence-free, but I brought consequences there, I guess. I'm not too worried about it, though. I have a good wife and a good life, so flying and learning are enough right now. No judgement of others on my part, I just have my own hierarchy of needs, and being faithful to my vows is among them. Have fun, and sweet dreams.

Hey, Raphaelinio, thanks for this thread! It worked! I went on a trip with my mom and some friends to a dude ranch nearby. I had decided to try to get lucid, hoping the strange environment and other people nearby would help. I recorded the dream in my dream journal under the title "Lucid!" if you want to read it. It was definitely the most clear LD I have had, and the longest. I usually get too excited when I get lucid and wake up right away, but this time I had a few minutes to play around. I attacked some cops at the end, which was probably a bad move, because it woke me up.

I'd love to hear if anyone else has tried using strange surroundings or people sleeping nearby to increase the chances of a LD.
