12 or 24 hour meditation tips please???

i have heard of monks and yogis doing realy long meditations, and i would like to try to do a 12 or 24 hour breath focus meditation.

i would not eat the whole time and i would sit in a cross legged position to create some disscomfort so i dont fall asleep.

does this sound like a good idea or not?
      any tips?

Monks and yogis do really long meditations because they are used to meditating for such long periods. If you don't meditate 24/7 already, or have experience meditating for long periods, I don't see what the point is? If you fall asleep you aren't meditating correctly in the first place, so intentionally giving yourself discomfort is useless. You will just be irritable. Work your way up.

      Serious?

First, don't begin meditation with the idea in your mind that you should be uncomfortable. Not good. You should eat, and sit comfortably. Most importantly: don't be a slave to the clock.

lol... jumping to 12-24 hour meditation is like a couch potato deciding to jump up and go for a 60 mile run today.

Don't listen to them you can totally do it. I recommend the 32 hour head-stand meditation. This was first used by Rinpoche Udofudokai and he became enlightened the moment he reverted back to a standing position after the 32 hours was up. Simply stand on your head in a room with a concrete floor and wait, counting your breaths. After counting 1400 breaths, start back at zero and repeat.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

If you are going to meditate for 12 hours you need to take breaks and you need to eat. I have gone to multiple extended meditation retreats and we never sit for more 30 mins straight. I've heard that in some monastaries they do hour long periods of sitting with a 1-5 minute optional break. Maybe some monastaries have multiple hour sitting sessions, but seriosly if you sit in half lotus for over 2 hours you will be in pain when you try to stand. If you managed 12 hours you'd probably end up injuring yourself.

I don't want to discourage you from trying this, but if you do you should probably change your approach. At the very least I would suggest you do 20-30 min periods of sitting meditation alternating with 10 minute periods of walking meditation. And take stretching and rest breaks. Really though I'd suggest you find somewhere you can do a retreat. It's a lot easier when you take steps to make it a lot easier. Not eating or moving the whole time will just make you miserable.

If you really wanna get anywhere with meditation you have to start enjoying it. Just sit there and enjoy your breath, stop trying to attain some ideal.

157 is a prime number. The next prime is 163 and the previous prime is 151, which with 157 form a sexy prime triplet. Taking the arithmetic mean of those primes yields 157, thus it is a balanced prime.

Well I would recommend building up to that point but what ever floats your boat...how often and long do you meditate? The longest I've meditated was 3 hours and that can even be a bit intense at least for me, I'm not monk hahaha. Usually I do about 20-40 minutes. Like I said, I don't know how often/long you meditate but if you don't do it that often then even an hour could be "too much". Most people who try to jump to long hours of meditating and not building up, usually get bored and quit (a few people I talked to from workshops on the topic). But yeah like others Said it is okay to take short breaks if you plan on going that long!

Yeah 20-30 minutes is the best way to get into meditation if your goal is peace and mindfulness. If your goal is super-powers you need to stand on your head and pour toxic waste down your noise while meditating for 12 hours.

I did meditation for an hour or two a few years back and after 10 months I started halucinating creepy sounds so I stopped o.O. Probably did it wrong or something, perhaps too long.
