This is very understandable. I've been considering going into psychiatry, and think one of the things that makes me most qualified is the fact that I've had psychotic episodes, psychotic breaks, numerous experiences with various mind altering substances, which has given me a much more thorough view of how the mind works. I don't think I'd ever feel comfortable talking to a psychiatrist that had never been crazy at some point in their life. They're just not qualified.

A good psychiatrist would not only has had formation you lack, but also experience consulting and treating people with many emotional and mental problems you probably didn't even know existed, which would provide an wider perspective, if anything less limited than yours. I imagine many psychiatrists would give a damn too.

I'm sorry but when you accuse them of being limited and having an "unrealistic view of the human mind" it seems to me the issue is that you just don't like the fact they don't tend agree with your supernatural assumptions about your problems and the world.

That is very true, i think that would greatly benefit a psychiatrist. I hear though that studying to be one either makes you go crazy, or a genius haha

Really? I've never heard that...I'm interested to know why people would say that. Any idea?

Also...there is such a minutely fine line between genius and insanity...I've known people on both ends...and people who walk that line on a daily basis. They are exhausting to be around after awhile...perhaps I'm not cut out for psychiatry after all.

I heard that from one of my friends in college who is studying psychology. I dont know why she would say that though. Maybe its the whole point of studying the mind, im not sure.

I would actually be happy if that were true...as I hinted at before, IMHO...unless you've truly gone crazy, how can you expect to treat or understand it? I'm over generalizing though, of course. I realize that psychs do more than merely prescribe medication. But I still don't think they're fully qualified...which makes me wonder...

That kind of makes me think of the way our immune system works. Kind of the same principles. Like some things you get the sickness only so your body can build an immunity against it. I dont know, probably doesnt make too much sense.

On the whole psychology thing, here's my take on it: Any psychologist worth his weight in sawdust should be able to help you with meditation, affirmation, auto-suggestion, or possibly even hypnosis. I'm not here to say whether or not the spirits are real, but regardless, all of these things would give you the willpower to drive them out of your head.

I plan on at least doing something related to psychology (although, apparently, carrying a 700-page psychology textbook isn't normal to most High Schoolers ) and it seems to me that while I haven't become crazy (yet) I have become more of a cynic, more of a Machiavellian, and become more interested in manipulation and Social Engineering. So, we'll see about that.
