Exclamation Turning on lights in dreams.

I was on a thread about reality checks and I saw this.

      "5. Turning the lights on/off
When you are dreaming, one of the things some people are unable to do is adjust the light level of the settings you are in. If you try to turn the light switch on/off and nothing happens then there are 2 possibilities:
      a. You are dreaming
      b. The light bulb burnt out the light switch doesn't work for some reason."

I constantly have this nightmare in which I am in a pitch black room and I am late for school/work/etc. and I really have to leave this room to get there. The problem is, I can't find the door or the light switch. I know where the light switch is though.
I am frantically running around the room, panicking trying to find the light switch. My body and my head aren't both controlled by me though. I will run toward where I think the light switch is, and my head is thinking "finally, I can turn on the light and leave." but as I'm about to turn on the light, my body turns away without my heads consent and the panicking continues until I wake up.

Can anyone explain what this dream is about and why one can't change light levels in dreams.. It'd be really helpful to know, maybe the answers could lead to me chilling out in this dream instead of freaking out.

(Also, I'm posting this here because this is my first time posting and frankly, I don't know the most appropriate place to post this)

Sounds like a pretty normal recurring nightmare. I highly recommend you look at this nightmare tutorial. It talks about recurring nightmares, how to combat them, etc.

I just told a member in another thread you can use a recurring dream to your advantage. Before you go to bed, tell yourself that you will recognize when you are trying to find the light switch and realize you are in a dream. Hopefully, you will realize you are dreaming next time you have that dream and do a reality check.

It is possible to change light levels in dreams, but uncommon. Most people aren't able to use light switches especially in non lucids. I am not really sure why the switches won't work for most people. I searched the forums and found a few threads about light switches:

In the first link someone said it could have something to do with subconscious not making a connection with a switch and a light coming on. Anyway, I hope I was able to help you a bit If you have any other questions, please ask.

I do remember my regular dreams, when flipping a switch would nut turn the lights on, and locking the doors would not lock them - kinda nightmarish. So making my dreams bright was one of my first priorites when started to lucid dream.

When I ended up in a lucid dream that was at night, I yelled out loud "lights". It took couple tries, but the skies would brighten up a little with each yell. But by then, I didn't care about changing night into daytime, because funny thing happened - the dreams at night were not scary at all, since I knew I was dreaming.

And if you want to flip the switch in LD and it doesn't work, there are other ways to make light. You can make yourself a flashlight, a lightbulb on the ceiling, make the sun come out, ...

Also, eventhough what you read in tutorials is valid, please keep in mind, that it's not cast in stone. It's how it works most of time, or for most of people. Often times, when you tell yourself, that you can do it, you will be able to do it. Happy dreams
