      Hi! Some newbie queries

Hi there everyone! From looking around, this looks like a great community of dreamers!

Just over three weeks ago I had my first ever lucid dream (I realised I was dreaming!), and I loved it, but woke myself up shortly afterwards due to the excitement. I really want to be able to do this more often, so I started a dream journal.

For the first few days I was only able to produce a few lines of A4 per day, and couldn't really remember many details. After about a week though, I was writing a page for every night, with 3 or 4 dreams. I've been able to remember more and more each time, but each dream seems so different and I'm struggling to spot many similarities or recurring themes.

Also, I have been getting memories of dreams I had ages ago, and actually remember having them! Weird right?

I really want to progress but I'm not sure what steps I should take to get to the next level. Do you guys have any tips or methods that you think I would find useful? I'd really appreciate them!

      Thanks!

There is all kinds of information and tips here at this site and the people here are all very experienced. Just don't get overloaded or overwhelmed with the amount of information. Go slowly, trust in your own efforts and experience, and learn a little bit at a time. Always make sure you are having fun doing it. Never make it a chore, to write in your dream journal for example. As soon as it is a chore, or any feeling of frustration, etc... then you are working against yourself. Just have fun, and if you start getting tooo serious take a little break and relax. You are already progressing good!

      Welcome to DreamViews!

Make sure to check out http://www.dreamviews.com/introducti...-dreaming.html first and foremost, as it has the basic info, as well as some links to helpful tutorials.

Just wondering, you mentioned you used A4 sheets? I would suggest acquiring a notebook of some sort, just so it will be more convenient and you won't risk losing pages or misplacing the sheets or rearranging them. If you want, you can even customize your journal, maybe put some artwork or design it yourself to really make it special and encourage you to write in it.

As for the recurring themes, we usually refer to those as 'dream signs'. Don't worry about figuring them out right away, what's important is you build a solid dream recall first by attending to your dream journal. Once you have quite a few entries, you'll start to notice your dream signs. Remember that dream signs come in many forms. This is a little guide I made a while back, I hope it helps http://www.dreamviews.com/general-lu...igns-read.html

Anyway, check out the DV Academy and perhaps you'd like to join a class to get personalized guidance from the teachers, students, and apprentices.

Good luck, and if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask! Seeya

Maybe it's a dream and if I scream, it will burst at the seams.

Thanks for the responses guys! In terms of making the journal, I have copied all my entries onto the 'My DJ' section of this site and plan to write my future dreams in here. Is this a good idea, or should they be handwritten?

Also, what is the usual progress of beginners like from starting out to being able to reliably become lucid? Just so I know what to be aiming for (I know that it may take a while but I am prepared to work!).

Welcome!!! Dream Journals can be handwritten or written in a computer. It depends on the person whether or not it effects recall, so I would try it both ways and see what you get.

There really is no "usual" since we can't really put everyone into a group and study it. Immediately after my first lucid I started having 5 a month, but I was reading book after book and learning as much as possible so that I wouldn't do it wrong and making sure that I tried the most reliable methods first (RCs and mantras) and getting 8 hours each night. I see lots of people move about that speed as well, it is my personal belief that if you are earnestly trying to LD and researching it (not just trying a billion techs out), anyone can LD once a week. I have yet to see someone prove me wrong, get 8 hours of sleep, DJ everything (check out my DJ system in my signature), and stay consistent with what you do. If someone else can do it, then so can you. We are all equal.

Many disagree with me on this I believe. I think that some people do find what technique works best for them quicker than others, but after your first LD, you have a technique that works, stick with that one for a while and get it better and better. You can do it! If you have any questions feel free to ask. I would recommend checking out the DVA:
