Red face My Video Game Dreams

      Hi, everyone.

My name is Amanda and I'm definitely not new to dreaming, but I am new to the idea of becoming aware or lucid while I am dreaming. I regularly remember quite detailed dreams, but no matter how crazy the things that happen in the dreams are, I never even consider the idea that it is not real life until I wake up. Most of my dreams are about video games I have played where I meet characters from the game and I can use abilities or items from that game, sometimes multiple games combined with each other. Lately I seem to have the same abilities as Alex Mercer from the [Prototype] video game... part of that is really cool, other parts are a bit disturbing, but always interesting. I did a Google search to see if I could find out what my dreams might mean and I found this site on lucid dreaming. I have some really interesting dreams, but I am interested in learning to become lucid and get more out of my dreams.

Hey amanda, dreams are realy crazy things aren't they ?
As someone who's addicted to video games as well, i usualy dream about I as a character from Dark Souls, beating bosses and stuff. i know, freakin' cool

One advice i can share with you is to do a Reality Check everytime you start to play, just to trigger awareness in something videogame related.
There are another people in the forum that will help you archieve your first Lucid Dream.

      Welcome, Amanda!

It sounds like you're having some amazing dream experiences, and maybe they could become even more fun if you learn to become lucid.

I wish I could have dreams like the ones you describe! One of my lucid goals is to recreate the environment or meet characters from my favorite video games, but I have yet to be successful. It sounds like you've got a natural talent for this. Even if you've been doing it unintentionally so far, the familiarity of these kinds of dream experiences should make them easy to recreate if you decide to attempt this lucidly.

As for what your dreams might mean, since you state that these experiences are based on video games you've actually played, then it sounds like they could be classified as "day residue," where dream content is inspired by some of the observations and events from waking life. There's not necessarily any deeper or symbolic meaning at stake, although it is likely that the plotlines, characters, and events from the games that you are dreaming about have some kind of emotional resonance specifically for you. That is a form of meaning too, but one that only you are in a position to interpret!

      Welcome to the big DV!

These video game dreams are an example of day residue. (When things you did during the day carry over into your dreams.) It is quite common for things you do during the day to carry over into dreams when they are on your mind. Though I have found sometimes there might be a time lag of a couple days.

Now I hate to be a debbie downer, but lucid dreaming and video games don't always mesh too well. The reason being; in learning to lucid dream you are learning to identify the dream experience from the waking experience. Learning to recognize when you are in the dream reality is tough enough. Video games are yet another reality that you experience regularly, so they can add another layer of difficulty to becoming lucid.

I'm not saying that it's impossible, or that your going to have to give up playing games if you want to be good at lucid dreaming. I still spend quite a lot of time playing video games, and still get lucid regularly. I'm just giving you a fair warning. It sounds like you naturally have good dream recall and clarity, so you should have a running start.

Hey jade, i believe that's the opposite..
Gamers tend to dissociate the reality to the dream better and that's why they are more likely to LD.

APA have an Article about it o/

Really think so? Well I suppose it just depends upon how the mind of the gaming oneironaut works. I just make a negative association with games because generally when I play them I find myself 'in a daze' so to speak without really thinking about lucid dreaming or reality checking. Though I suppose it could go both ways. I never thought to think about it that way, thanks.
