      First up, welcome to Dreamviews!

Now tell me, do you usually have problems with sleep? If so then you should really see a doctor about that. Though if you don't you might just be having trouble sleeping due o excitement about lucidity? I think there have been people with similar problems in the past. All I can suggest in that case really is that you try to relax and not get too excited.

Also, I hear that chamomile tea does wonders for getting people to sleep. Look it up sometime eh?

Sometimes if you concentrate too hard on getting to sleep, it has the opposite effect. Like Alex D said, if this is a chronic problem, you should talk to a doctor about it. If not, don't try so hard! Use relaxation techniques to clear your mind, and sleep will come. Maybe your sleep schedule got thrown off, or maybe you slept in too long that morning. Regular sleep schedules are important not only for dreaming, but for good, restful sleep for your body's sake.

I found the first time I tried a few techniques after waking up one night (MILD, and that one where you move your fingers about) I couldn't get back to sleep for about 2 hours. Which is very much out of the ordinary for me, I usually fall asleep very quickly (a few minutes). I was laying in bed and my mind was racing, not nesecarily about lucid dreaming though. I think my mind was just stimulated from thinking about lucid dreaming, and all those techniques I attempted. Anyway I was a tad worried about being awake for so long, and I felt a bit put off about trying those induction techniques. So the next few nights I just left it, but i decided to try some techniques again (failed them again), and I found it still took me a little longer then usual to get to sleep. And I have found now, that If I do fail any techniques, and find myself laying there awake, I will usually fall back to sleep in normal time. It just took a while for my brain to get used to all the unfamiliar activity.

I think the reason you took so long to get back to sleep is because you've used your brain in a way you haven't used it before while on your way to sleep. Your not really used to it, and that activity in your brain has convinced it that it doesn't want to sleep. You have nothing to worry about. Im sure that with time, if you choose to try any techniques again, you'll soon get used to it and start falling asleep as per usual.

Now, speaking of sleep, I need some...

      Goodnight

When you get more used to the techniques, I'd say you won't have much of a problem sleeping. I think you need to relax your mind more. You might just be too excited or too stressed, or even as Matt said, it could just be because you weren't used to using your mind in that way. I hope you have better luck next time. By the way, welcome to the forum!

It could be your sleep schedule. My schedule was thrown off for the past few months until couple weeks ago. I would stay up until 5 or 6 in the morning, and sleep till 2 or 3 pm. I finally broke myself of the habit by staying up for an entire night, then running a few miles at 6:30 am.
I kept myself awake until 8pm and crashed. Hardest day I ever had, but I'm glad I did it and am finally back to normal, lol.

Hey there and welcome to the forum!!
It sounds like you could have insomnia (sometimes I call it an insomnia spell if it lasts a while). The best thing to do about it is to wait until it passes over. Trying to fall asleep doesn't always work either, so just wait for it to pass, and you should eventually fall asleep sometime (when I was 3, I had such bad insomnia, my mom would put me in bed at 9PM, but I wouldn't go to sleep until 1AM, I would wake up many times during the night, either in SP, or really sick to the stomach, and I would wake up altogether at 9AM). Although this can also be turned into a RC advantage, as you will know when you are dreaming, since you remember that you could not sleep earlier.
