Well, you have to focus on your goal before sleeping.
      For example:

If you are going to wake up early and try to do WILD, focus your intent on waking up at that time.

If you plan to do MILD then focus your intent on waking up after each dream period.

I understand that it is hard, but you can;t let your thoughts wander, it means your losing conciousness. So be careful about that.(I do it often)
Oh yeah, welcome to the forums!!
      You guys suck.

      Welcome to the board!

Just focus on having a lucid dream, but don't be guilty if you don't have one, that can be a downfall.

      Welcome!!

I cannot add much to what ffx-dreamz said except, keep a to do list, and review it regularly.

I've found that I have a really hard time remembering what it was I wanted to do when I become lucid and will sometimes waste a great opportunity.

My lucid dreams are generally not that long, so I kind of don't have time to sit there and think of things to do. What I must focus on now is on maintaing lucidity for longer periods of time.

Before I go to bed I generally set my alarm clock for 6 hours later and hope to wake up. Once I am up and am going to atthempt a WILD or MILD I keep reminding myself that I am awake, or conscious, which helps me stayed focus....
      If I hadn't made me
I'd be more inclined to bow
Powers that be would have swallowed me up
But that's more than I can allow...

      Welcome Welcome welcome

A technique that worked for me initially was to say to myselfI am going to remember to recognize that I am dreaming. And repeat saying that until you fall asleep. But as ffk-dreamz wrote , you have to concentrate and not let your mind wonder. Good luck
