I never really liked beer, initially. I just drank to get drunk, so who cares? By the time I turned 21, getting drunk was lame and so I never drank. When I decided to go back and try different beers, I bypassed the 'big names' from the get-go. But I usually shun what's popular in the mainstream anyway (I'm so hip). The grocery store I go to has a decent but small selection of beer including many local brews, and they offer a 'choose your six-pack' where you can pick any combination of beers. So that's how I started trying some, and for me the dark beers were actually what I gravitated towards.
But even then, I usually need to have a beer a few times before I really appreciate it. It's kinda like music, for me... the stuff that's an instant hit usually gets old quick, whereas the stuff that needs to settle and grow on me often times ends up as a favorite.
So with my last batch: I liked the pumpkin beer initially, but I've grown tired of it now. The Autumnfest wasn't an instant hit for me, but by the time I finished the last one I quite liked them (and will be picking up some more while they're in season).
