      Floatation Tank Plans

Ok, so I finally have some money. I was gonna buy a motorbike, but I think it can wait.
I'm building a sensory deprivation tank instead!

      Here are my plans.

I will use this thread as a WIP for anyone else that may want to build one.
As well as get some advice from people in case I'm doing something wrong.

These plans are subject to change due to materials etc.
I was going to use epoxy resin, but it seems that it may contain a toxic chemical (Bisphenol) which inhibits hormones. So I'm probably going to go with a normal pool/pond liner of very high quality.

The "B" part is for if I use water bed heaters. "A" is for if I use an external heater (more likely, and more environmentally friendly coz it doesn't have to be on 24/7).

Nice. I look forward to seeing how it goes for you. I would totaly make one but I don't think my parents would be up for me building a giant tank full of warm salt water in the back yard. I plan on making one when I get my own house though.

haha. I think my mum just conceded that I'm gonna do it and she can't do anything about it.
I'll probably have it in my room. So she's ok with it. I'll probably just have to clear everything else out except my bed and piano lol

Just hoping there won't be too much evaporation. I'll have to do some tests.

Let me google that for you

Sorry, been waiting for the opportunity to do that for a while now

Basically, and I'm gonna be brief coz I gotta go to work in a minute....
It is a tank that is sound proof and light proof. It has about 8-10 inches of water in it.
The water has 800, and up to 1500 pounds of epsom salts (MgSO4 - Magnesium Sulfate) dissolved in it, depending on the amount of water. 800 is the average amount though.

This allows you to float without any effort at all. Like the Dead Sea (I think it's that one?).

The water is also kept at body temperature (36.5C or 93.5F).

So basically you are blocking off all sensory input as much as possible on Earth.
Space is pretty much the only place you would get more deprived of sensory input lol

So yeah. It is basically the single best stress relief ever. And you feel alert and just simply amazing afterward. You can also hallucinate if you let yourself, and explore your mind.

Respect for using your extra cash to improve the quality of your consciousness.

And if you really want to go all the way, you can always throw out the saltwater and replace it with breathable oxygenated liquid!

Haha, maybe. If they come up with one which is dense enough and it is well tested

Ok. I've figured out most of what I'm going to do.

It's no longer going to go in my room. It's simply too big to fit.
If I didn't get cupboard and bookshelves in there, it would've been perfect. But I didn't have a choice in the matter.

It's going outside now. On a concrete square which the previous owners had a spa on.
So to stop the ventilation bringing in cold air, I will build the tank part as normal, but then also construct a room over the top of it.
So the air will warm as it comes in to the room, and be warm enough as it enters the tank. Since it will all be natural flow, no fans.

I'm going to use solar heaters during the summer. Gas heaters are way too expensive, so I'm going to build a simple one, if possible, for during the winter.

      Floatation Tank Plans22423.jpg

Simply a titanium tank (titanium is corrosion resistant) which gets water pumped in to it. The gas heats it from the bottom. When it reaches 60c or so, it gets dumped in to the tank, through the filter. Then more gets pumped in. Until the water reaches 36c and the gas shuts off.

Alternatively, the pump just gets put on very slowly, and as the titanium tank gets filled it will heat and then the hot water will rise and flow back in to the tank, and this would continue until the tank reaches 36c and the gas turns off. That might be easier.
It would avoid needing two timers.
And I would just turn the pump off when I get in.
But I would just need to figure out how to slow pumps down.

It would also only be heating up an hour before I get in. Obviously.

      Hoping this will work.

I've enjoyed substances which caused total sensory deprivation...and also total sensory stimulation. Each was awesome for different reasons. It seems like you're building a large coffin or something, just be careful with that thing. Good luck. Take pics.

ATM I'm figuring no more than $1500.
Depending on how much the Epsom Salts will cost, which I haven't looked in to yet.
But I've got ~$4000 saved up anyway, so it's all good.

Haha, it's completely safe. And I intend on trying some of those substances after using this tank and getting some experience in the psychedelic arena.
But I'll be somewhat careful. Thanks
And I will definitely take pics, I'm going out today to buy some supplies!

The hallucinations won't be "if you let yourself". They will come no matter what if you stay in there long enough (like more than 15 minutes). I'm totally jealous by the way.

Also, your mom should be thanking you for investing your time and money into this. My bet is if you can ever get her to try it out, she'll end up using it more than you do.

Well, I've been in there 3 times for an hour and I didn't really hallucinate yet. Probably some people will hallucinate more easily.
I only had a sort of hallucination once really, and it was just sort of like my imagination was incredibly vivid.
Like I was trying to think of something and it just popped straight out in front of me, in the blackness.
      Pretty amazing.

As for my mum, yeah I'm pretty sure I've already got her interested in it lol
At first, she was like "why would you want to do that?" as is typical of a lot of people.
But then I explained it and she was pretty curious I think.

      Yeah, pretty much.

Also, jeff, here is a good website with places where you can float.
I went to a center 3 times and then decided it's just too expensive and I'd be
      better off building my own.
It's usually around $30-50 an hour. And discounts for longer, or multiple sessions purchased at a time.
Although I suppose that's comparable to a 40 minute massage price.
It's good to try out once though first, obviously. Before getting your own.

      Update:
I've figured out all the materials and will be buying some of them tomorrow and hopefully getting the actual tank part done within the next few days.
That's assuming I can borrow a car to transport the materials from the shop to my house.

I've changed the plans a bit also, I will upload the picture later on.

Ok so I'm raging quite hard now.

      FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      See....

So there really is not much suitable wood at the store.
The only thing I could find was merbau, which is awesome wood.
However, it's all in different sizes and shit and I need specific sizes.
They had like 3 pieces there in the right length and then like 6m long ones
      and 3.2m or some shit.

So I don't know how I'm going to proceed now. But I'm quite annoyed.
      Just wasted 2 hours.

I might have to go to a logging yard thing and see if they can cut me some.
Based on the store I just went to, at a conservative $7 a metre (it was 6.something) it'll be about $168 for the wood. Not including the supports.

Not too bad really. As long as I can get the correct lengths.

Just the fact that they don't even have equal sized timber.
      And I wasted 2 hours.

And I can't get it home unless I can use a car that can have a trailer
attached to it. So I will probably be waiting a while now until I can get it.

Plus my families just being retarded, but that's another story.

It's probably a combination of those things.

Oh I wasn't questioning that it is a completely frustrating situation and you are rightly upset about it. It's just that...when someone says rage...I imagine something like this...

And I dunno...doesn't seem like anything to give yourself a heart attack over. But maybe they use the word different where you're from.

Ok, maybe.... moderately to highly frustrated.
