help me out! my tail bone hurts

yeah so my tail bone hurts. Really bad. Its right on the edge of the bone right next next to my butt. It started 4 days ago and it didnt really hurt that bad. On a scale of 1-10 my pain was like a 2. I thought that maybe i had fell on my butt or something and hurt it. But it just kept getting worse as the days went on. now on day 4 i would say that my pain is a 7 on a scale of 1-10, and thee skin around that whole area has turned a deep red and I taking 800 mg of ibeprofen every 6-7 hours. I didnt get any sleep last night. I had to take a sleeping pill which didnt help, then i had to take 800mg more of ibprofen to get through the night.

im starting to think this isnt normal. Anyone here know whats up?

      Did you hit it?

Could be fractured...which would suck. o.O

(hopefully it's just bruised or something, though)

Tail bone pain is ALWAYS worse than a typical bruise.

But since you don't remember hitting it, and it is weird colors and hurting so much...the obvious thing would be to ask your doctor.

      Don't know, then, man.

Best I could do is give you these links for more information:

      Coccydynia 1

      2

And the Google hit list, if you wanna look for more on your own.

[Edit: And yeah, as Nina said, asking your doctor is always a good idea.]

Looks like you're going to have to drop your pants and bend over in front of a doctor.

If its that painful, then I concur, definatly go and see a doctor, as it could be broken.

No offence, but thats a bit of a stupid idea. You've already said you needed a sleeping pill + are dosed up on ibuprofen. Leaving it even longer could make things much worse.

Better to go to the doctor now, just to make sure.

Had the same one couple of years back. I had to buy a pillow shaped like a donut and bring it to school! (well of course i didn't, i just took a few of weeks vacation.) Cause that reeeaaaaally hurt! So i know exactly what you're going through.

My doctor said it could be a "trauma." I must've hit it badly way before. Yes, he asked me if i fell on my butt. I couldn't remember anything that happened to me recently then. So he said it could've been years back, and the pain is just starting.

Best thing to do, as what everybody's saying, go see your doctor ASAP.

Make an ice bag. This method is very good:

Get one part rubbing alcohol, two parts water and mix in a sealed bag then freeze it. It becomes a slush and stays frozen for the longest time because of the alcohol. It's the best ice bag I've ever had.

Lay on your belly and try not to walk as much or sit down or lay on your back. If you do have to, get a big, cushiony pillow and put it under.

      Take advil.

Tail bones hurt extremely bad, but if it's really a 7 (unlikely), then go to a doctor. A 7 is very very bad. My ankle is at 5 currently throughout the day and I nearly cry with every step. It depends on how much you've experienced though I guess. My ankle's 10 was the worst pain I've ever felt or imagined, so tailbones are at 3ish for me, wich was my average ankle before my last surgery in early January.

If it hurts enough to keep you awake all night and it's a 7, which should me non-stop yelling, clenching, crying, etc. Then get your ass into an x-ray or a CT scan.

Just don't go into a MRI. Deal with the pain if you have to go into one of those, it's not worth it. The 30-40 minutes is more painful than a couple days of 7.

Amen. I hurt mine about four years ago. That was the longest, most painful semester of my life... (and I never went to the doctor). It was at least five months before I could sit down for more than a few minutes without being afraid to get back up. And like you, I don't know how I injured it. Anyway, it wasn't until last year that I finally pronounced myself "cured," though it still bothers me if I sit down for too long in a bad chair.

Moral of the story, go to the doctor... and sit on pillows. Bring one to class/work. I'm serious.

All this pain without any trauma, could it be the nerve that got stuck somewhere ?

i guess when i say 7 it goes by my pain experience. getting a 3rd degree burn on my finger was like a 4. Breaking my collar bone was like a 6, and when i almost broke my knee like 2 months ago and had to limp for like 6 weeks it was a 5. So trying to lay down without any pain killers is like the worst pain ive had in awhile

ah pewp i hope this gets better faster than that.

anyway ill get to the doctor on monday if it doesnt get any better. I know thats putting it off, but i dont want the same thing happening again the last time i went to the doctor. I waited in pain for like 5 hours and in the end he just said to take alot of ibeprofen

I've bruised my tail bone before... if it's a "normal" tail bone injury, your doctor isn't going to do shit about it. I mean, they can't give you a butt brace or something. However, even though tail bone fractures hurt, they shouldn't hurt quite THAT much. I've broken my collar bone, and that was some of the worst pain I've ever felt in my life... only second to my ears coming back to life after being almost irreparably frozen in the cold a few weeks ago. If your tail bone hurts more than THAT... then that's serious. I also don't recall ever having any redness in that area.

The point is, something doesn't sound right. Don't put it off. Go today (Friday) if you can. You really don't want to be stuck waiting through the weekend to go see a doc. Just go, man. If your doc says to just take whatever you've already been taking, then tell him and demand that he come up with some other solution. Also, don't underplay the amount of pain you're in. When you described it here as being a 7 out of 10, I didn't think that was quite so bad until you explained how your particular scale works.

i described the situatioin to someone with a little more knowledge than me. They say its probably not the bone but an infection or something. Pain has gotten worse from just 6 hours ago, and if i take much more pain killers i think ill over dose. guck this. Im going to the doctor tomorrow.

Sounds like the right thing to do.

Even if the doctor says that it has to heal on it's own.. at least he can give you something to take the edge off the pain.

Please let us know what the doctor says!

alright im back from the doctor

i got like 1 hour of sleep last night. I was in the worst pain ive had in my life O_O. It was a giant sist right next to the tip of my tail bone. This thing was HUGE! i had like 1000mg of ibeprofin and 2 lorotabs and when they put the numbing shot in it still hurt! The doctor said some people cry when they do the numbing part. Not me though Then he cut about a inch long cut right into the sist, and he just pressed it. All this ooze infection and blood started poreing out. There was tons of the stuff. Then they got this antibiotic water stuff and just pored it all over it. They bandeged it up because it needs to heal from the inside out. I tried to stand up afterwards but i started seeing spots and my hearing started to go. I almost fainted .

I feel so much better! I still have to go in for an operation in a month, but i dont care. The worst pain i've ever had is finally over!!!
