Mysterious rumbling noise in my house...

It's been going on for a really long time. Sometimes, when I'm home on a weekday (usually between 12pm and 3pm - I don't know if I've ever noticed it on a weekend), there is this weird rumbling that seems to come from...well...nowhere. It sounds like rolling thunder, but it happens even when (like today) there isn't a cloud in the sky. I thought that it might be wind either blowing on the house or maybe shaking the garage door, but it happens even when there is no wind blowing outside. I even thought that it might just be big trucks driving passed the house, but I've lived here long enough to know what that sounds like.

Usually, I just hear it when I'm here by myself, but my daughter is here with me, and she hears it to. It comes in intervals (maybe a minute or two apart) and then it just stops suddenly. There are a lot of sinkholes in our area, and I didn't rule out the possibility - because it does sound/feel like the house is rumbling - but that just wouldn't make sense, because it's usually around the same time of day and the sounds/intervals are so similar that it doesn't seem to be something completely random such as the house settling.

It's the weirdest thing, and I just have absolutely no idea what is causing it...

...That's all, I guess. Just thought I'd share.

Maybe you're sitting on top of an underground water or gas main?

That's possible. I will try to find that out. Don't you think that the sound would be a bit more frequent/constant, though? Sometimes it will happen every day (or every weekday, seeing as that's when I usually notice it), but only in the early afternoon hours. I don't know a thing about the conditions of living over a main, but would the activity be that sporadic?

Well... you seem sure this comes from the house or the ground itself, but... Is there an airport within about 2 miles of your house, and would you happen to be approximately inline with one of the runways? I ask that because when commercial jetliners throttle up to take off, the engines make an awe inspiring thunderous noise that can be heard from miles away in a straight line behind the plane.

[edit to add]Weather conditions affect how far the noise travels from this, whether it refracts up away from the ground, or stays down. Also, different times of day might mean different runway or direction used for take off. Both of which could explain hearing it only during certain times of the day.

Nah, I'm pretty sure it's not a plane. The nearest airport is a good 15 miles from here, and it is pretty much nothing but small/private aircraft. The nearest airport with commercial liners is in Sanford, which is more like 40 miles away. I did use to live right next to an air force base, back in Georgia, though. That got really annoying after a short while. Heh.

I dunno, it was just the first idea to pop into my head.

Steam pipe blow out at a set time each day, but I don't know why there would be a steam line running under your house down there in Florida.

Measure the sides of your house from inside and then outside, compare them.

      Trust me on this.

I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with this, but I saw an episode of unsolved mysteries and one of the segments was about people hearing low, rumbling, or humming noises. It is called the Taos Hum. Look it up on google or whatever.

Rancor in basement could be the problem.

Otherwise I'm going to have to go with Omicron on this one.

The exact same thing has been happening to me - I 'googled' house rumbling and found your post -- I live in middle Tennessee, and I have MANY sink holes - enough that I am now VERY concerned and afraid one day the rumble will be my house descending into who knows where!
A friend of mine told me that it is possible that blasting in surrounding areas for construction may be causing it. There are massive rocks all over the place and it is possible that rock blasting is going on. Also check to see if there is air in your water main. I had mine flushed - thought that would do it - but still feeling it -- just like you said - like a massive truck coming down the road (except I live on a VERY RURAL road where NO trucks venture very often) scares the bejeezuz outta me!

I was going to say blasting and mining, but I don't know if that goes on in your area. Blast rumbles can be felt for miles sometimes so it doesn't necessarily have to be close by. It happens here in Texas often, and I know in more northern states.

Real question: Is this even a valid concern any more? This thread is two years old.

      Update!

      Mystery solved, I believe.

Ocala Forest Pinecrest Bombing Range: That Ruckus Rattling Your Windows Is the Navy Bombing Florida | FlaglerLive - Your News Service for Flagler County News Palm Coast News Bunnell Flagler Beach Beverly Beach and Marineland

I'd forgotten all about this bombing range until someone mentioned it the other day. It's a couple-dozen miles from my house. The interesting thing is, before I even knew about it, some friends and I went camping in that forest a few years ago. The next morning (hungover as all hell) we woke up to the sound of fighter jets flying over head and ordinance dropping a short ways away. It was awesome. Since then, though, I'd forgotten how close that range was to my home. It's been a little while since I've heard those booms (which would make sense, in that the sound doesn't always carry that far), but I do think this might explain it.

Just wanted to share that with you guys.

Awesome that you solved the mystery O!

Just to keep the thread alive, I'll share a couple of mystery sounds I've encountered in/around my house lately.

Several months ago I started hearing this bizarre high-pitched sound that seemed to be coming from somewhere in the basement. Hard to describe, it was sort of like a weak wailing or like if you'd hold down a high key on an electronic keyboard, but it would sort of shift slowly up and dow, which made it sound really eerie, like a mournful wail. And it was the kind of sound that I just could not tell where it was coming from. It would happen at odd times, often in the middle of the night, and would go on for anywhere from a few minutes to like almost an hour sometimes - very unnerving!! When it would happen while I was trying to sleep it would drive me crazy, because I could hear it in the bedroom but still couldn't figure out where it was coming from or what it was.

A friend was here one time when it happened and he was just as baffled as I was. While it was going, we searched all over the basement and even up in the kitchen directly overhead, where it was faintly aidible. We gave up.

Later, when it was really driving me crazy, I started removing all the acoustical tiles from the basement ceiling, thinking there must be some kind of old elctronic device a former owner had left there that was going nuts... found all kids of weird stuff up there including some strange remnants of old devices that I had no idea what they might have been. But never found the source of the weird wailing sound.

Until suddenly one night the power went out. I was in the basement and had to stumble though the dark to find my way to the stairs, but then I noticed a tiny little red light that would blink on briefly every minute or so. That was the smoke alarm, which I had recently installed, because the building code requires one that also detects carbon monoxide, and the old ones didn't.

And suddenly I knew (and felt so incredibly stupid). When I took down the old smoke detector I never threw it out, I just threw it in a box with a bunch of junk and left the batteries in it! Sure enough - that was it! I guess it sat there and eventually the batteries drained so much that it was giving off some kind of low battery alarm. The really messed up thing is, I had several times thought to check the new smoke detector, but it never even occurred to me to think about the old one, under a pile of junk in a box. D'oh!!

Then more recently I was outside in the back yard taking some pictures when I suddenly started hearing something that sounded exactly like a roaring huge fire crackling away quite loudly down a little way in the woods. But there was no smoke and no fire visible anywhere. It just began suddenly, no ramping up or anything - it lasted for a couple of minutes, and then as suddenly as it started it ended. Really weird and perplexing.

A few days later I had decided to go out in the woods and take some pictures. I was along the stream at the bottom of the ravine that runs behind my house when it started up again, and it was very close this time... in fact just around a bend in the stream. Accompanying it was a torrible stench like raw sewage. Hearing the Twilight Zone music in my head, I walked over there, no idea what to expect.

What I found was a little sewer pipe or something sticking out of the side of the bank and sewage pouring out of it into the stream!! The smell was unbelievable!!! I almost choked on it seriously. It chugged away for a while, nasty looking dirty grey foam churning up all around in the stream, and then it stopped. So nasty - actually though I'm not sure if it's sewage or some kind of industrial waste. Most likely sewage from one of the houses on Main Street... there are really no industrial buildings near enough to explain it. I shudder to think of all the deer and raccons and squirrels and rabbits and whatever other kinds of animals rely on water from that stream...

You might want to report that to your local environmental office or police. If it's not something that's supposed to occur or is polluting the local water someone or some company could be in hefty trouble for causing the spill.

Every state has an environmental office that handles things like this. If you still have an archaic phonebook it will be listed under the state government pages, or you can find them on the internet.

Man, if I were you I would totally report that, I don't think that's legal.

Wow, that didn't even occur to me...

I've seen similar things before - there's another stream a little farther off in the woods where another pipe dumps similar foamy sludge into the water. It's been there since I was a kid - I always just figured this was standard practice.

Hard to imagine people would be able to get these pipes installed if it's not legal! Or, maybe it used to be legal decades ago or something?

Those pipes are common and not only legal, but encouraged here in Britain, they're called Combined Sewage Overflow pipes... there's a campaign on by surfers to prevent their use. Apparently it's the same in some parts of the US.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a policy in 1994 requiring municipalities to make improvements to reduce or eliminate CSO-related pollution problems. In 2000 Congress amended the Clean Water Act to require the municipalities to comply with the EPA policy.

I read up on them. Basically the policy is that they're bad and need to be eliminated, but many still exist.

The rule would be that if it looks like it's causing problems or abnormally high levels of pollution, it's time to make someone aware of it. Most environmental agencies are small and the efforts that can be achieved are limited by money and manpower.

Communities sometimes work to solve issues like this also, particularly when it affects an area important to lots of people.

Pay attention to where the flow goes, and remember where the pipe is. A lot of these are....forgotten.

Yeah, I did a little googling the other day, after my last post here, and found an article about some in I think Cleveland or somewhere - they said upgrading the entire sewer system would bankrupt the city!

If Cleveland can't afford it, my little dirtball town definitely can't!! Apparently these were put in when the original sewer system was built, maybe 100 years ago or maybe 50, something like that. The ones I know of are in streams that eventually feed into the Mississippi.

      I have it too!

Well I'm in Hendersonville, TN (Just north of Nashville) The closed air force base is a few hours away, but we are in a very residential area. No strange sewer pipes either. But at random times throughout the day (never at night) we get the sound of thunder and it's so loud it sounds like it's coming from inside the house. There is a large gas line just a few hundred feet from the house. I thought it might be a water hammer but it's just so loud and we're not running the water when it happens. Everything shakes for a few seconds and it feels like an earthquake.

      Weird!

I'm out in the British countryside and I occasionally hear bombings, too. Also, lions. I live in a cool area.
