      Use of Binaural Beats

I've looked into them lately and decided it would be worth a try. In the very least, it could be a possible tool to use during meditation.
However, when I turn it on and listen, it seems to have the opposite effect. I get a bit of anxiety, and my heart races, breathing increases. I have to tell myself to calm down, that it's just noise and eventually I can relax and listen.

I was curious if that is a normal reaction to them. I've decided to put off using them due to the reaction until I can understand why and if it's still safe to continue.

Any advice to why this is happening?

Sorry, I don't use binaural beats. Hopefully someone who does will be able to answer.

Maybe you should try different binaural beats?
They are perfectly safe, i am using them myself to help with relaxation phase of WILD, and they work fairly well for me.

First, I recommend BrainSync's beats for LD/astral projection. They are effective for me as they seem to be "softer" on my mind. I actually experienced very similar feelings when I first tried BBs myself. I recommend thorough research and reassurance that they are safe. In fact, I think they are very helpful/healthy when used correctly, however, as with all things they can be abused. Listen to your body and brain, find the ones that feel right for you and the right time to use them, or even create them yourself! I've found they work best with regular use - establish a rhythm so your body and mind will be able to better anticipate their effects. Due to my mental predisposition and scatterbrained nature, I am sometimes unable to break through the mental chitterchatter when I meditate. So I use binaural beats to give me extra mental balance to proceed into deeper states.

check out Gnaural at sourceforge - FOSS to let you create binaurals
audacity even has a plugin that makes it easy, but I really do recommend using fine tuned BBs like the ones from brainsync. I'm no sales rep or anything, they're just the one's I've found success with. Sorry if i just violated a bunch of forum rules by that...
