The difference is mostly subjective. If its scary, its a nighmare, but even then some people have different criteria for calling something "scary", and even if they think its scary they might not call it a nightmare. |

The difference between nightmares and night terrors are that with night terrors you can't usually wake up the person that easily and you don't remember the dream. With a nightmare you do remember the dream. |

[23:17:23] <+Kaniaz> "You think I want to look like Leo Volont? Don't you dare"
So, scary as in when you are in the dream you remember being scared or scary as when you wake up and remember the dream and then you were scared? |

I always considered a nightmare where you wake up in extreme fear of your dream. Sweating and such. Wishing that you'd never have a dream like that again. Anything below that, for example, maybe you're walking around, and someone jumps up and kills you, well, anything like that is just a bad dream. |

Yes like seriously waking up from a horrid dream you don't want to go to sleep. Seriously a nightmare in my case is seriously horrid. Not like a rabbit eating my leg lol. I mean having a dream like you are a victim in saw. Thats... yea you know |

Exactly, I once had a nightmare where I was in my room, and I could hear foot steps. I was scared because they were like, STOMPING foot steps, and I could hear tis dragging sound, you know? Where you drag a piece of metal on the ground? Well, I was scared, cause the sound was getting closer and closer. Finally, it was just outside my room. I reached for the pocket knife I keep next to my bed, located on my dresser, and it wasn't there. Someone began to slam on my door, and then, THWACK! The door fell down, and there was this, HIDEOUS creature, armed with an axe. Hard to describe, but you can almost call it a demon. Not the steriotype of a demon where it's just a red human with horns, but like, just evil looking, it was human-like. A woman, but the right side of her face was torn off, revealing a skull and lots of blood. I saw her and tripped while walking backwards. I started to slowly crawl backwards until I bumped into my wall. I freaked out and screamed for my brother to wake up. (We share a room.) And when he awoke, he saw the woman, saw me, and laughed. He didn't care I was going to die. I ran for my window, ripped it open, and As I was crawling out, she swung her axe at my left leg, once it struck. I awoke. Scared. I couldn't sleep for several hours. I have a few more nightmares I'd like to share... |

Oh yea man I had a pretty bad nightmare and I was scared to look around when i actually woke up for real. Because I wok up (Or at least i though) In my bed... and I looked around like i was really awake. Something didnt feel right I looked to the side of my bed. And up pops some scary looking doll in a dress... Yea... yea.. dolls I know. But what was really freaky is she said "I'm going to kill you" Yet thats pretty cliche sounding too. But if you "think" you are seriously awake and something like a doll appears in your face in the dark its freaky. I though i was really going to die or something. I got up and ran. My heart was racing because i was like where is this thing. Then i really woke up with my heart racing ad i was scared to look around or even move.... |

After thinking about it, I just remembered several nightmares that I kinda wish I had forgotten. Some of them kept me from sleeping for a few days. Mostly having something to do with my family or house. |

Ok some say that both haveing a dream were your scared and waking up from a dream scared are both nightmares, and some others say that it's just waking up scared? I was thinking more of if nightmares happen in a certian stage of REM or something. But haven't found any information like that... |

No they origanate from the same place. nightmares means "dark horse" the unknown amagine a dark horse running in a field hard to see harder to catch but when he comes up to you you are frightened. at that point stop and face him ask him what he wants or needs. then it will be revieled to you no need to be frightened. you are dreaming and you have the same or more power then he does because you are the dreamer and he is only a guest of yours you have the power to get the information and then send him on his way but only do it in a loving manner because ultimetly he is ther to help. |

The way I define a nightmare is by that sense of dread which builds in you when a nightmare happens. Without that I count it as a dream, or a bad dream if the content is scary in some way. |

Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection
Is it all you want it to be?"
