Lightbulb Dark pulse induced lucid dream

      Hello everyone,

Time ago I came across some research that really caught my interest, in order to keep it short I'll quote the important stuff:

"In albino rats, during the subjective night (and therefore when there is a weak light in the environment), by turning the light off. At thermoneutrality the probability of enter REM sleep is very high."

"A variety of sensory stimuli (e.g., visual, auditory, and thermal) are known to induce rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in mammals. Studies have examined the induction of REM sleep in albino rats by light-to-dark transitions, a phenomenon referred to as REM sleep triggering."

      Studies that mention the phenomenon:
The pretectum mediates rapid eye movement sleep regulation by light. - PubMed - NCBI
Cold exposure impairs dark-pulse capacity to induce REM sleep in the albino rat. - PubMed - NCBI

Is anyone familiar with this? Has this been tested on humans? We are talking about a simple REM sleep triggering method here, if this or something similar were to work on human beings I think it could radically change lucid dreaming. And thus, my hype . Any insights?

So your question is whether or not dark pulse would work to induce REM in humans? If you have a partner willing to sleep with the lights on, give it a try. Mammalian brains have some similarities, from what little I know, and every single one of us evolved sleep patterns dependent upon circadian rhythms. Rats are naturally nocturnal and that makes me wonder if they would respond differently (more brain activity, for instance) based on a sudden reduction or elimination of light.

My other question would be whether or not this "dark pulse" response is dependent upon overall sleep deprivation of the rats (from sleeping under lights). It may be that from sleep dep. alone they are being dropped into a quick REM state. Just speculating here; I have not read the articles in full.

My question would be why this would affect lucid dreaming? We already can "induce" REM fairly easily via timing: near the end of the traditional 8 hour sleep cycle (6.5 to 7 hours), you will almost certainly enter REM upon falling asleep, with very little NREM space. How do you foresee this changing lucid dreaming? Do you mean the possibility of being able to induce REM at will, and therefore, lucid dream on your work break, for instance? I would want to know more about the conditions that need to be met before rats (and, potentially, people) will respond positively to dark pulse therapy (I shudder to think of such a thing).

Thanks for the info, though--helps me out with some other stuff I've been working on!

Yeah I didn't really explain myself there. I'm working with a team that's trying to bring a new lucid dreaming mask to the market and I thought having more knowledge on this could be of help. Like say the mask does not read REM but instead causes it this way, may bring the price down quite a bit.

You have some good points, thanks for the input!

Is this being crowd funded? Is this mask still in its r&d phase? Or is this just a thought on paper? I'm very interested in knowing more about the development of this mask. Do you have a website or anything that provides more information on this mask?

Also, very thrilling thread you wrote. Dark Pulse. Thanks for the interesting info.

They shine light directly to selected brain cells. They have to implant something in your brain. At the end you look like this :

      optogenetik_quad.jpg

But not just that, they will have to bring a segment of a special gene into the genome of your nerve cells. Thats just possible with a gene therapy which is very risky.

The mask is in r&d phase for the time being and really the dark pulse thing was just something that caught my eye, the mask uses the ussual method for making you lucid (flashing lights). The objective is to make an affordable REM-detecting mask.

Oh well, still very interesting, just not as suitable for human use :p

In the future if they could make nano tubes fire small doses of light, it could work without surgery.
