Realistic, Accurate, Time Dilation

Many LDers say that time dilation is not possible in lucid dreams. However, I disagree. There are so many claims of people spending days, even weeks in dreams. Humans can experience real time dilation. Some drugs slow down time perception. The point is, I believe that through much practice and training of the mind, you will be able to dilate time to some degree. How far could it be taken? I obviously don't know since I haven't done it before, but I would guess that an average 20 minute dream could be dilated to feel like a few hours. I think we underestimate our minds. I believe that we can all train our minds to do any extra-ordinary thing that we can imagine through much practice, but most of us just don't ever do it. Yes, this might prove to be a very advanced technique, but wouldn't it be worth it to be able to spend hours upon hours totally free in the dreamworld?

I have come up with a few ideas on how this would be possible, but I am depending on one in particular. First of all, I think that having your subconscious handle the time dilation is a good idea as long as you do it correctly. A lot of lucid dreamers probably think that this does not work because they think they have tried it. But I'm not just talking about summoning a clock and making it move slower or altering it in some way (if this has worked for you please let me know hahah). For me, I would talk to my dream guide about dilating my dreamtime. He knows absolutely everything about my Dreamscape, and knows how to control every last aspect of it. So if this is possible, the best person help you out would be your dream guide. I have only talked to mine about it one time until now. What he told me is that yes it is possible, but that I should first improve my dream recall and that I would have to be fully lucid and present in the dreamworld. He said that my dream tech team is creating the device right now to make it possible, and that once he gets a hold of it, he will be the only one to handle it in the beginning. According to him, we need to take it slow (no pun intended), and start with something very basic and simple, and then build up to dilating time into longer periods like days.

I trust him 100%, so I will get back to everyone on how it turns out, but I want to ask all you to start pursuing time dilation. I would like to work with people that are really dedicated to seeing if this is possible, and how far we can take it since the LD community seems to be divided when it comes to time dilation. Like I said, you may need to be an advanced lucid dreamer to achieve this consistently, but you are all definitely welcome to try it out and get back to me on how it goes. I definitely agree that this is possible, and have absolutely experienced this many times albeit unintentionally in dreams. However, I've only experienced it mildly in terms of hours, rather than days or weeks, as far as I can remember.

One pattern I've noticed is that, when I go to sleep very conscious of when I have to wake up, and retain that awareness in my dream (thinking, shit, my alarm will go off any minute now) my dream seems to drag on much longer than expected, and I often wake up naturally, often an hour before I actually had to wake up. It's as if my mind was under pressure and went into overdrive, making many more experiences happen in a shorter amount of time, more condensed yet experienced normally.

This is similar to when my mind goes into 'brainstorming' mode when trying to sleep- I get all sorts of ideas and simulated situations and daydreams going on streaming through me, and when I typically give up on sleep and write shit down, I find that barely any time seems to have passed compared to what it felt like. Anyways, I believe that we experience time very subjectively in general, but for sure dreams seem to have the potential to really amplify that.

If I experience anything notable relating to this topic in the future in lucid dreaming, I'll be sure to report back here. It's always been an aspect of dreams that I thought would be amazing to tap into more.

@kamyu Yeah, I totally agree with you. Like you said, I don't believe that you can experience lifetimes or many years like many people have reported to have done in dreams (although I'm open to this idea if I happen to be proven wrong), unless its all a matter of false memories. But I don't see why you couldn't experience a time dilation of a few more hours. It seems like our minds could create something believable as long as you figure out a reliable method. We know that our minds have the potential to speed up and slow down our perception of time. A mild example of this would be emotions controlling how we experience time, but there are more extreme examples, like near death experiences, or any other situation that fills you with adrennaline. People who have gone through these kind of things always report how time literally slowed down. I'm sure that you could train your mind to be able to run at higher speeds and process information faster, so that you could dilate time. I'm thinking that some balance of this kind of thing and implantation of false memories would be perfect (false memories seem to be looked at in a negative way when talking about time dilation, but I think they could be quite useful).

Mmmm interesting... I also think it's possible... It's true, that drugs can dilatate your time perception so I don't see reason why you couldn't do it in lucid dreaming... Why not start learning how to dilatate your brain in wakings stete? For example if you do something borring, it seems like eternity haha so why not try to do something super mega borring in lucid dreaming, that could work :))

Jk, yeah, we need to find some technique how to dilatate time in dreams and spend there few years and master everything in dream enviroment, that would be nice :)

Nn the other hand, I've experienced few long lucid dreams with full awareness lasting more than hour, and I can say that it get kind a weird and scary to be lucid for such a long time... I almost wished to wake up sometimes and sometimes I simple couldn't because there was just another false awakening.

Anyway, keep us informed about your experiments with dream guide, subconscious is very powerfull thing that can makes wonders.

Yeah I agree. For me, I probably wouldn't like to stay in a lucid dream longer than a week. Just cause of the fact that after a while you could start to go crazy, knowing that the world you're living in isn't real. Especially because real time dilation is NOT reversable. Once you dilate your dream time, you can't wake up until that time is up. I like to use lucid dreaming for escaping the real world, not because my life is terrible, because it's not, but it's always nice to have time completely to myself where I can do anything I want. So for me, I would usually only add a few more hours or days. Spending around 12 hours in the dreamworld would be great. I just think that 1 hour isn't nearly enough, you know?
I mentioned this before, but when it comes to time dilation, false memories are always looked at negatively, as if it's not "real" time dilation. Why though? I'm positive that when it comes to major time dilation, our subconscious minds could create something very believable using false memories.

I will keep you all updated on my findings. I've been busy the past couple weeks, so I haven't had many lucid dreams except for DILDs, which I'm not a huge fan of. But as soon as I get the time I will get WILDing again. It should be soon. I am very confident about this though, my dream guide has never failed me on anything, so time dilation shouldn't be any different.

Time is an illusion, I don't see why time dilation would not be possible. Sometimes I feel like some days of real life are shorter than others. Have you noticed how time went by so much slower when you were a kid? Time perception is just that, it is not some kind of accurate clock. Although it may be unlikely that you can spend 100 years in one dream, maybe if your brain fills in enough gaps with fake time it may be possible.

Personally, I'd say that I haven't really experienced time dilation, my dreams have lasted around the time of a REM cycle. Even dreams where I have spent days felt more like days in a movie - condensed into an hour or so. I don't see why it wouldn't be possible in theory though.

Exactly, think about this. Have you ever been half awake and half asleep in the morning after your alarm goes off, and you have no idea if your alarm went off 3 minutes ago or 30 minutes ago? I just feel like time is so flexible, and that in a dreamstate your perception of it should be very possible to alter.

I had a funny time related experience just a couple of days ago. I was meditating. Had a timer set for 20 minutes. Somehow I knew exactly when the time would run out. I was counting down from 19 seconds and hit it right on the money. I've never tried to do a countdown like that before, and I don't know why I decided to do it. Suddenly I just got a feeling that the alarm would go off in 19 seconds and I was right.
