I found a time machine (which then went all wrong)

My mistake. And now for an excerpt from...a book.

Today was the day; today was the day when they would realize what
Zaphod had been up to. Today was what Zaphod Beeblebrox's
Presidency was all about. Today was also his two hundredth
birthday, but that was just another meaningless coincidence.
As he skipped his boat across the seas of Damogran he smiled
quietly to himself about what a wonderful exciting day it was
going to be. He relaxed and spread his two arms lazily across the
seat back. He steered with an extra arm he'd recently fitted just
beneath his right one to help improve his ski-boxing.
''Hey,'' he cooed to himself, ''you're a real cool boy you.'' But his
nerves sang a song shriller than a dog whistle.
The island of France was about twenty miles long, five miles
across the middle, sandy and crescent shaped. In fact it seemed
to exist not so much as an island in its own right as simply a
means of defining the sweep and curve of a huge bay. This
impression was heightened by the fact that the inner coastline of
the crescent consisted almost entirely of steep cliffs. From the
top of the cliff the land sloped slowly down five miles to the
      opposite shore.

Wow, that's weird. I thought it said "3" instead of "2" until you both pointed it out. Kind of like that paragraph where you have to count all the "F"'s in it, and you always miss one or two out.

Anyway, diverting from my mistake (see, I was never good at time travel anyway ), onto the F thing. How many F's are there in this paragraph? Count once and then scroll down for the anwser.

      6. There are 6 F's in that paragraph. Look again.

haha, I'm so dumb. Even after I saw the answer I had to look back at the paragraph for like....what 5 times just to find them all.

Woo! 6 F's on the first try!
The best times of your life should not be when you're still so young, or else you'll live a life always dreaming of the past.

[o'nus] Because the human brain cannot compute "of" [/o'nus]

At least, that is what the website said.

      lol

If you get 6 on the first try, it could also mean that English is not your first language. Also, the way the paragraph is presented makes a significant difference on the counting of "F"'s, although, the word "of" is still left out from the mind as it considers it insignificant.

It happens all the time in regular life where you will ignore little, insignificant, things in order to get the end result.

To illustrate this better, read this list:

      tug
      pull
      dog
      yank
      heave

What word sticks out the most? Dog, right? Even if it does not, in cognitive experiments using such lists, subjects were later on asked to recall the list and the initial words recited were the abnormal words (dog) and the words before and after were commonly forgotten as they were seen as insignificant in memory recall.

Hope that was a little more enlightening..
