EHS happening because I'm becoming more aware of when I start to sleep?

I'm almost ready to see a doctor for this. I have been hearing all these loud booms after 10pm at night and I don't know if I'm having Exploding head syndrome and I'm hallucinating these noises, or if there's something else going on. I'm tired and I've been reading on my phone since I can't get to sleep but I'm still tired. Is the noise a result of EHS?

I have been asking myself if I'm dreaming and doing a lot more realty checks lately. The noise comes in a series of one or two short booms. Always from the same place. But when I got out bed and listened, I didn't hear the noise.

My normal bedtime is generally 10pm-10:30pm.

How close are you to falling asleep when this happens? I noticed that you mention getting out of bed. Also, where does the sound seem to be coming from?

I was extremely tired and was about to turn my phone off and try to get some sleep when the noises started. The banging was what kept me from getting to sleep.

Are you already not well-rested (currently suffering from sleep deprivation)? This could be only getting 4-5 hours of sleep a night when you normally sleep around 8 if you can.

If the answer is yes, I would suggest getting a good night's rest (for a few nights) and see if the situation corrects itself.

If you are already very well rested, then seeing your general practitioner is not necessarily a bad idea. Keep in mind, however, that your GP may not know what the problem is, and may refer you to a specialist, which can end up being a big mess--especially if the specialist also doesn't know and makes a guess (I'm slightly distrustful of physicians :/)

      Hey Dragonsword,
I too (I think) suffer fro EHS, although to me it's more of a buzzing feeling. I personally find that when I am tired, stressed or anxious, the frequency of episodes increase.
I spoke to my doctor about it and he was pretty useless to be honest. My understanding is that EHS is very difficult to diagnose and, unless you undergo a full sleep study (here in NZ it costs around $2000 and it mainly focuses on sleep apnea) there isn't much you can do other than try to rest more (sometimes certain supplements work on some people).

There is a facebook page on EHS, you might want to check that out?
