Hi everyone
Firstly, I'd like to say a big hello to DV after three years of inactivity (lucid dreaming sadly took a back seat due to a number of reasons). I intend to get right back into it, and rejoin this awesome community that has helped me out so much in the past. If anyone from 2012 remembers me then give me a shout!
On to my issue:
The last two nights, while falling asleep, I've been drifting into these intense pre-dream episodes that immediately wake me up again, my heart racing. I tried studying it last night and noticed this to be the sequence: as my mind starts to drift and think up some random scenario (i.e. going into a dream) a swelling sine wave or white noise sound starts to crescendo in my head; then, I'll have an intense feeling of movement in my head that won't stop, as if I'm spinning or falling; this will trigger alarm bells and I'll try to snap out of it, but notice that my body is paralysed, so only opening my eyes and darting them about the room will wake me up again. It's kind of like that feeling when you get that sudden falling feeling while asleep, but one that doesn't end until I force it. It's pretty terrifying and is preventing me from sleeping!
One example from last night was feeling like I was rotating round a pole, clutching it with my right hand, while a white noise sound got louder and louder until it was unbearable. I actually tried to roll with it that time, but it was so intense and vivid that I had to wake myself up. When I did, my vision was vibrating and my heart was pounding.
Now, I have two theories as to why this could be happening. Firstly, I've been in India for the last five months, and for at least the last three I've been smoking a hell of a lot of hash every day, so I'm wondering if this is some intense dream relapse (as I've not been remembering any dreams for months). Secondly, I just returned from a five-day music festival (Glastonbury), where I consumed certain substances and got maybe three hours of sleep a night, so perhaps the change from that has been a bit of a shock to my system.
Has anyone experienced or heard anything like this before? Or can anyone hazard a guess as to what's going on? As nasty it is at the time, I'm not overly worried that it will continue for too long; just curious to get some insight from the DV community! Last night it must have happened about 8-10 times until I finally shut down, so it seems like a pretty significant mental glitch!
Thanks
