      Sleeping 18+ Hours a Day?

Hey everyone, so recently a friend of mine has been getting extremely tired and sleeping for extended periods of time, up to eighteen hours a day. She has been to the doctor and they have ruled out narcolepsy, anemia, mental health issues, vitamin deficiencies, etc. So they are thinking it might be neurological or a sleep disorder. Has anyone else had any experience with anything like this and what could cause it? Thanks.

Depression can cause that as well.

There was another poster around here awhile ago that complained of a similar thing happening to them, and I sometimes feel like I might have a touch of - whatever this is. Cause I need about 9-10hrs a night to be rested(which is on the high end). I am very jealous of all you who can get buy on a few hrs.

Or it could simply be a long-term sleep debt their body is working to pay off. I know my junior high started at the crack of dawn (6:30am) and I would always feel drained at the end of the school year. I'd go on summer break and for the first month or so, I'd be sleeping even more than usual. (12+hrs on some nights).

Thanks for the replies, my friend considered maybe it was depression too but she has dealt with that in the past and she said it manifested in different ways, so it would be unlikely for this to be a result of that. Also this has been going on for about a month, and it has gotten to the point where she went to the doctor, which she hates doing, so it's definitely not a normal sleep debt thing.

Im sure you would have covered this, but in case you have not, does she use drugs at all, this kind of thing can happen when coming off of large doses of stimulants.

It is probably nothing to pathologize. I think its great that she can sleep that much and it is probably doing a lot of long term restoration. Like one person said it might be her body correcting for stimulant over use. Or sleep debt from school and work burning the candle at both ends. Adrenal fatigue. Teach her to remember her dreams and LD and she will have a lot of fun! Also, if it is depression, I think she has found the miracle cure. I wish I could sleep 18 hours a day. I have insomnia now and it stinks. I can barely sleep 6 hours even if I try some days. I am lucky to get 8 hours of sleep. Maybe one day I will be like your friend and be catching up with 18 hours a day, glad for every moment of sleep I can get.

Its sadly theme for me, but I also have problems with sleep. I can sleep per 14 hous and it doesn't make me feel full of energy. Those days I'm rare going outside, it was bad time, no imagine with what it was related... But now, I make a note that I can't sleep long when I'm was at direct sun lights more than two hours. really is true, maybe problem with vitamin D. I think we (humans) may feed only with sun energy and water sometimes

I only sleep 6 hours a day and it's very rare that I get 10 hours of sleep.

When I go on vacation I sleep like I am dead. One time after coming home from Panama City Florida spring break in college I slept for at least 2 days! It's only when its an everyday thing that I would start looking to something medical or psychological.

If you notice me while you're dreaming, don't be a stranger...say when!
