Question Bringing a DREAM to life... Are you interested in designing a Game Creation System (GCS)?

      Idea

To create a freeware/open source GCS (Game Creation System), tentatively named D.R.E.A.M. (Design Realistic Environments And Models) which will be used to create an interactive dream translation program/video game. This GCS will allow users to create their own levels or entire worlds. It will utilize technologies like Voxel Terrain and Procedural generation of objects from trees to houses to decorations in a house. It will not be system/resource intensive, it will be coded in such a way that during the design or play phases it will use minimalistic system resources. The system will not be about the graphics, it will be all about functionality, as it will be coded modularity it can be updated for new graphics technologies as the years pass. The GCS will have everything the user needs in one program, a modeler for creating static meshes and characters, an image editor for creating textures, a world editor that can, zoomed out, edit entire worlds or galaxies and zoomed in can edit simple levels, a music editor for the recording and creation of sounds and music, a video editor for the casting of simple video scenes using game technology, etc. Because it is an all-in-one package it will not be able to do quite as much with each of these inner programs as say its industrial counterparts in Max, Maya, Photoshop, etc., but these inner programs will be able to do just enough for the purposes of game creation. The game will have a special script editor that uses normal, descriptive text to create entire worlds (this is another piece of the puzzle for me, as when I read the Myst series I have always wondered how it would be to have an editor that created whatever you wrote.) DREAM will also build a sort of library, using its internal resources and any other resource it has, based on each user's unique dream symbols, so that entire dream worlds could be created simply by detailing them in the script editor then polishing it up using the other tools. The whole idea here is to allow the user to create and interact with the worlds of their dreams, and by proxy to serve the main purpose of this program.

      Purpose

Providing a way for people to work and interact with their dreams is only a secondary aim of the DREAM GCS. The main purpose is to begin a spiritual awakening. The program in itself may not start it, it may only serve as a seed. But the intention here is to get people to become aware of and seek out spiritual matters. The tutorials provided with the GCS that teach users how to use it will most likely be centered around the user creating a 3D world from their dreams so they can explore it and perhaps find the hidden meanings of the dream.

Today when I woke up I thought about what the worksheet I worked through in Jack Canfield's “Secret to the Law of Attraction.” I have teaching and writing talents. I have a high reading comprehension. I am an artist who is finds happiness in working with geometric from, which translates to level design, modeling, and architecture. I am interested in dreams and spiritual matters. Most importantly by working on this GCS with those who are to work on it with me, I will serve and help others. It meets all the requirements as I know them to be a Life's Purpose, my Life's Purpose. Even as I type this I am energized and excited – other good signs. Now there remains only one thing, to give this idea away, to put it out there, to remove my ego and any personal claims from it. If it is my Life' Purpose to be involved with this project then I will be involved. If it is not perhaps then it was a part of my Life's Purpose to get the idea out there to others. I will know simply by what happens in the days and weeks to follow.

There are no coincidences. I came to this forum for one reason, to help someone. You can verify this for yourself with my very first post. That means that someone here will be lead towards, or serving, their own Life's Purpose by helping me work on and create DREAM. Either someone here, or someone here will lead someone to me as a result of this post. We will find each other, all of us that are to be involved with this. For DREAM to be created it will need at least one coder/programmer, one texture artist who can also design UI elements, one modeler who can design basic building parts, and one sound editor to create the sounds and music. I will serve, if I am to serve in this project, as a sort of director. I have an idea of how the interface should be designed, how it should work, and how it should look. I have an idea of what features the engine should have. I have an idea of how the various elements of the GCS should work and function. I have these and many other ideas from the video tutorials that should be used to teach the usage of this program to how the procedural building engine should work by taking themes containing certain architectural pieces, elements if you will, and construct these into villages, cities, even forests that have a common theme. I may serve as the visionary behind this, or as simply one of many visionaries. I may be called not to serve in the creation of DREAM at all. I release this into this forums with no expectations whatsoever. No clinging or aversion. No ego. If this is what I am to do it will flow with my Life's Purpose to do it.

So if you are interested there a a few things you need to ask yourself first, and I highly suggest you read Jack Canfield's book, which I mentioned at the start of this post. Does serving in the creation of the DREAM GSC utilize your unique skills, abilities and talents? Does it engage your interest? Does serving in whatever capacity towards which you feel most drawn excite you? Are ideas already pouring into your mind? If the answer to these questions is, “yes!” I ask you to open yourself up to the possibility of doing this. Never mind the things going on in your life. Your job, your family, the obligations you have. God created you for a reason, He designed you for a purpose, and this may just be what you were put here to do. You will have to let go of these other things, and you need to let go of the expectations of those around you, no matter what they say. If you are sure you feel pulled or drawn to this project, then you must drop everything else and pursue it. Do not worry about those other things, because when you are following your “Life's Purpose” everything should fall into place. You should still find time for these other important obligations, should they flow within your Life's Purpose.

Take your time before acting. Think about this, meditate on it, make sure. Understand that few things in this world are instantaneous. Results may be slow in coming, there may be much time in the trenches designing this GCS. But one thing you can count on is if you are following the Ideal Course God designed for you (which He did with the same care and effort He gave in designing who you are) you will be happy, beyond happiness actually. You will feel fulfilled, complete. You will have a sense of purpose. Things will fall into place. You only need to follow your Life's Purpose, and leave the ego out of it as much as possible.

You are not what you have, your ambitions, your achievements, etc. You are not what your parents, your wife, your husband, your kids, your church and the people at your work tell you. If you are unhappy doing what you are currently doing then you are not “on purpose.” True happiness, true joy is found in doing something that utilizes all your special abilities, skills and talents. It engages your interest. It gives you the kind of energy as I have now. I have 2-3 teeth in my lower right jaw causing me so much pain my right arm is weak and partially paralyzed at times. I can't even touch those these without paralyzing my arm and experiencing shooting pain. Yet as I wrote this I hardly felt that pain at all. I am beyond my pain, above it. I am excited and I am pretty sure I am serving my Life's Purpose in some way here. If you see where you can serve in this project and begin working on it you too will transcend all physical/emotional/mental/societal concerns.

      To Apply

For now I will serve in the roll that seems to call and pull me in the creation of this GCS I have for now called DREAM. Please note I have no attachments or expectations here. The features of this engine, its parts, even its name - everything I envision is simply that, my vision. Nothing here is set in stone. DREAM will be special and unique. It will be created by a team of people flowing in their Life's Purpose, following the courses God created for each of them, that strange as it may seem, was in part or whole to come together with others to create this GCS. As a result it too then must flow in its creation to be designed its absolute best. I will, as long as I am to serve this project, use my vision as a sort of goal or bar to try to reach. However it will not be a true goal. Our Life's Purposes are beyond goals and bars because they are beyond expectations. With every goal to meet, every bar to reach, there is an implied expectation. For those flowing their Life's Purpose they need to have no expectations. Water does not know where it flows. It simply follows its channel. It is always present-minded, never dwelling on the past or focusing on the future. This then is the example we, and the DREAM GCS by proxy, must follow.

That said for now I feel I should serve here, so I will serve as I said earlier, as a sort of director. PM me or post of this project is one you wish to get involved with. Please note that my resources are limited right now. I do not have a a very good computer. But this is good, because if we want to create this program to use very little system resources it should be able to function on a laptop like mine. I have no worries, if I am to experience this more graphically the final parts I need for my computer, or a better laptop, will be provided for me.

We begin work immediately. I look forward to seeing what group manifests to bring our DREAM to life -

Sorry for being kind of dim-witted here, but is the idea to make a program that allows you to create a 3D world that represents your dream? Like you would just give it the descriptive text from your dream journal and it would give a fairly accurate image of the magical floating islands you described? If so, then this makes me extremely happy and excited.

That is the idea, of course it would not only be an environment created by text. There would also be 3D tools, giving you a way to manipulate your dreams with models, textures, sounds, etc. in a 3D environment. That would in fact be the default working environment, and the script editor would only be one of the tools it has.

Could you give a brief description of exactly how the finished program will function? Sorry if I seem like I'm being a little thick, but I don't get a 100% clear picture from what you wrote. From what is clear though, what you seem to be talking about is coding a 3D modeling program, an image editor, a sound/music editor, and integrating them all, which seems like it would be a lot of fairly advanced programming. I'm not saying it can't be done, I just want to point out the size of the task. There are freeware options available for all three of these tasks (Blender 3D, GIMP, Audacity), have you considered working on a program that utilizes files created with these instead?

The script editor however, as you described it, sort of puzzles me. As you described it, it doesn't sound like anything that any software I've encountered is capable of. Again, not trying to rip on your idea; I like the core idea; I just want to point out some of the challenges it poses.

Initially it just sounds like a huge task to me, too big to accomplish with 3 or 4 people. I have a friend who dedicated his life to making something similar and he's a mess now. Because when you do eventually realise that your "Life's Purpose" is not going to work out, it will be difficult to admit and move on from it, and hard to take. These things, private teams trying to make something big, almost always fail. Plus, the extreme religious undertones will probably turn a lot of people off. It would be best to dedicate your life to something with a surer outcome.

I know you meant well by your statement here, but this sort of message is negative in nature. Because of this it is more likely it will only accomplish the opposite of the purpose for which it was intended. It is non-supportive and pessimistic. You should re-examine your words and ask these questions.

      1. How do you know this is too big for 3 or 4 people to accomplish?
      2. How do you know how many people are needed?
      3. Do you have personal negative feelings coming through here because of what happened to your friend?
      4. How do you know my Life's Purpose will not work out?
      5. How do you know that others doing similar things have almost always failed?
      6. How do you know I, and anyone else working on me with this, would fail?
      7. What extreme religious overtones are you referring to?
      8. How do you know that extreme religious overtones will probably turn a lot of people off?
      9. How do you know what would be best for me?
      10. What would you define as a surer outcome?

Listen well to what I am about to say. The worst thing we can do as loving parents, brothers, sisters and friends is to tell our loved ones what they can not do! Think about that for a moment.

Now I am no student of history, but I imagine the Wright brothers had much criticism from those surrounding them, yet they built the first aircraft. Einstein was coming up with strange theories and my guess is that those close to him thought he was nuts. Abraham Lincoln decided he wanted to be president. What would you do if your son or daughter came up to you and said, with complete sincerity, that they wanted to become the president of the United States? Be honest here.

I read a little of Sting's biography, "Broken Music." His story is I'll bet similar to every other great person throughout history. A young man or woman has a dream. Parents have certain expectations. Money is scarce. The young man or woman turns their back on what their parents say, what society says, and pursue their dream. I am also reading a book entitled, "The Crazy Wisdom of Ganesh Baba" by Eve Baumohl Neuhaus. Ganesh was responsible, by the rules of the place where he lived, to care for his sisters. He had to take charge of his parent's business. One day saw someone out his car window. He left the car and his life to follow them, never to return. Thich Nhat Hanh defied his government to aid people during the Vietnam war and was exiled from his homeland. He is one of the most spiritual teachers you will ever read.

With the questions I had you ask earlier, here is one more:
      1. Are the beliefs that caused you to say what you did your own, or are they adopted from someone else?

Think about that a moment. Truly become introspective and examine this. Many of not all of our personal beliefs are adopted, Few are discovered and chosen by us personally.

I will let you in on a little secret... Society is wrong. The majority of parents, siblings and friends are wrong. It simply does not work. Now you might think if I am right it would be utter chaos out there, that if I was truly correct here civilization would be in chaos. Open your eyes. It is in chaos, but it is an organized chaos tended to by people who continue to believe the same things their parents did, and their parents before them. If everyone woke up one day, knew exactly what they were created to do, and dropped everything to pursue their dreams things as we know it now would fall apart. But that would be a good thing. The system is a broken, diseased animal. Best to kill it, to put it out of its misery. When we as a civilization finally come to the realization that this is what we should do and then do it, there will be room for change, and a much better, much more developed and advanced society will take its place.

I will let you in on one more secret... I only suspect that it may be my Life's Purpose, or related in some way to it, to work on DREAM, based on careful reading, thinking and introspection. But I am not attached to this suspicion. My world will not fall apart if I am proven wrong. My task here is not to judge, not to become attached and not to approach other alternatives with aversion. I am to simply flow, and things will work out if they are meant to.

This is a hard concept to grasp I know. I am still coming to terms with it. This is not what we are taught and raised to believe. We are taught at best to have goals and strive for them. At worst we are taught, as I was, that you have to get any job you can. The hidden implication is that your dreams and your God given abilities, skills and talents are worthless. So they usually are, in the current model of the civilization we live it. It's all about the acquisition of wealth and possessions. Finding meaning in what you own, not who you are. This is why the system is a broken, flawed and useless thing.

This is why DREAM will not fail, because if it is meant to manifest, and if my hands are meant to help manifest it, then it will be created, and it will be created without any agenda of pursuing wealth. The money will come to support it. The best way to bring in the money needed will be revealed. A larger team than what I have outlined will come together if needed. If the development of DREAM fails it does not mean me, or anyone working with me on it failed. Nobody is their failures or successes. It simply means that either we corrupted it through some form of clinging or aversion, or that it simply was not the time for it to manifest. It could even be that the purpose of DREAM is to fail, so that like-minded people come together for another purpose. I do not know. I simply remain open to whatever happens. I flow, I accept, I do not judge, and I remove as much clinging and aversion as I can.

If your friend (I truly am sorry to hear what happened to him) had approached his project without goals, without clinging, without aversion, not judging, just flowing, and if your friend was following his Life's Purpose in the process, he would have succeeded. Even if the project still failed it would have lead him in another direction, which would have been the best path for him to follow at that time. Fro what you have said however your friend was clinging to this project. He defined himself by the success or failure of the project specifically, and his success and failure in general. Therefore when his project failed, in his eyes he was a failure.

I have a video to recommend to you. It will open your eyes and explain in much clearer terms what I am trying to tell you. The video is Wayne Dyer's, "Ambition to Meaning", found here:
      http://www.amazon.com/Ambition-Meani...5068221&sr=8-1

I would like to return this thread to the original topic if at all possible, so if you wish to continue our discussion you can start a new thread and link to it here, or you can PM me. I will even give you my e-mail address if you would rather communicate that way. The same rule of thumb applies to anyone else who may feel compelled to challenge what I say, Simply quote the text of this reply at the start of your new thread and we can continue this discussion. I will then delete this post if I can.

I hope these words have brought some enlightenment to you -

Have you ever used the level editors UnrealED, Hammer, or TESCS? That is somewhat what I envision this will be. These editors use the game engine they come with, as well as the resources of the game, to create spaces for the game. This will do the same things, but create whatever game or dream world the user desires. A GCS like DREAM works something like this:
      UNITY: Game Development Tool

The script editing is basically a way to add additional functionality to a piece of software, using simplified commands instead of a language like C#. So instead of something like:

      Main
      {
      class planet;
      {
\' Details of planet go here'\
      }
      }

The user would type something like this:

      Planet Primordia
      Average Surface Temperture: 75 degrees
      Populated: No
      Terrain: Lava and rainforest

This would create a 3D planet for you to explore. Of course it would have to be far more descriptive in order to give the editor enough to work with. Each section may have one or many subsections. You would need to describe the people beyond humanoid if you were creating another race. You would have to describe the type of forest. Is it an ancient old growth forest or is it many young trees? Details would be needed for every single object your planet will have. Once your description is complete you press enter and BAM! Your world is created.

Of course you may not like text entry so in that case you would use the world editor and, using 3D tools, you could create within the editor your 3D world. Both means accomplish the same end. Scripting would be better for adding functionality or detailing objects, like people or weapons. The 3D tools would be better for terrain and modeling. DREAM would be able to do some of the things that Blender, Gimp and Audacity do, but it would most likely not be able to do all of them. Just the basic most essential features. That way you don;t have to have to install and use these programs, and you don't have to deal with their steep learning curves.

I know that this will not be easy. Hard work will be needed to manifest DREAM. That's what I was referring to when I said, "...in the trenches." Here is the key though... When you are working within your Life's Purpose you are genuinely, truly happy. One of the common factors you will see in many people is that if they love what they do, the difficulty of the job does not bother them. This is also how you can tell if someone is not flowing in the Life's Purpose. They are not genuinely happy and fulfilled. They could be hard workers or not, but they hate what they do, and that will have some effect on the quality of their work.

I know I was raised to work hard as I believe I have said elsewhere. This was how my dad was raised and how his dad raised him. I don;t mind hard work. But if I was working hard at a drive through window, for example, I would hate it. I would hate it because it is not my Life's Purpose, as far as I know, to work at a drive through window. I would also hate it because I would be working hard at something worthless and meaningless. Nobody can support themselves working at a drive through window. So you are working hard at something you hate, spending precious hours at this task, literally wasting your God given abilities, skills and talents while accomplishing nothing of value. You will most likely need another job you hate and will have to work hard at it as well in order to make enough to pay for rent and groceries. Your days, and I have experienced this many times, will be spent basically working and sleeping. You would literally be wasting your life away in my opinion.

With that let us return to the subject at hand. I hope I have sufficiently answered your questions -

So, you want to use a simplified "script" like what you wrote above to direct a 3D level editor to generate a relatively accurate depiction of the world described? I just get the feeling that you don't realize just how involved this is. And as far as your reply to Dianeva's post, there's a big difference between crushing ambition (understand, I'm right with you on that) and just warning someone that the path ahead might not be what they're expecting.

Not to be a douche, but why couldn't you simply use a student version of 3ds max/maya, blender, gimp, and Unreal Development Kit, or CryEngine 3 SDK (or something similar, Unity, etc.)? The hardest part of all this would be the resource database, like textures, 3d models, scripts to avoid having to program themselves, etc. If they are going to be forced to do all that themselves, there are enough free things out there that they could already do it.

Again, nothing against your idea, I'm just curious as to why you want to do it if the tools already exist, unless I am misunderstanding your purpose. I mean yeah, you'd have all the tools in one package, but if you simply rar'd up the installation files of the programs I mentioned above, they'd all be in one package too.

You are not a douche, you have a very valid question related to another one posted earlier. Why not use these excellent applications you mentioned? OK, here's why...

      1. The UDK while excellent and free is designed for current and next-gen games. So its system and resource intensive. You literally have to have a computer put together with parts made in the last 2 years or less to use it.

      2. CryEngine 3 as I recall one of the CryEngines was released for free and the others remained commercial. Unsure - will need to verify that. If its commercial then the price is a consideration. If it's free it's likely to have high system requirements like UDK.

      3. Gimp is a free Photoshop alternative, meaning there are a lot of image editing features. It's more than what's needed and the last version I tried was lacking in some things like the layer capabilities. All you need for DREAM is some simple-advanced drawing tools, good export/import options, good format options, and excellent layer capabilities. Everything else that you see in Photoshop and Gimp will never, or rarely (depends on the artist) be used. Photoshop is out because it's far too expensive.

      4. Student versions of Max/Maya have limitations, free versions have limitations and watermarks. The limitations are last I read very serious. Full versions cost many thousands of dollars.

      5. Have you ever actually tried to use Blender? The developers purposefully used a very difficult, unintuitive control interface, making the already steep learning curve even steeper. I tried to use it for a while and it was a struggle to do anything in it. Granted I came from Max, so I had certain expectations about controls and interface. Someone new may not have as much trouble. But it is still a very hard program to use. The few who have figured it out apparently love it. DREAM will have something much simpler and more intuitive. You won't need an engineering degree to run it!

You got me on the resource database. I am aware that when you have a team working on something you need some sort of collective repository where everyone can access the latest work and add their updates. I'm wondering if a free, private website would be the answer here, or perhaps Sourceforge or Google Code? This is definitely something I would have to work out. A private server the team could access would probably be the best solution.

The reason to have everything in one package, meaning program, is simple... When you use an interface that remains consistent it's easier. My current interface design for DREAM uses tabs. In one you model, in another you edit terrain in another you create your level in another you script. As you become familiar with the program you will come to expect that certain buttons and shortcuts do similar or the same things. So DREAM requires the installation of only one program - itself - and you only have to learn one program to use it. Blender, Max, Maya all use different interfaces, as does CryEngine and UDK, Gimp and Photoshop. Imagine a program that does the necessary tasks that each of these do, but you only have one interface. That in a nutshell is (the) DREAM...

P.S. OK the CryENGINE 3 SDK is free for non-commercial use. When I get my gaming computer I will look at it and the UDK to get ideas for DREAM.

Be posting a link to the project page for this soon, and there will be an interface demo you can download and run. A friend did that for me many years ago when I first felt called to do this. There are also some scans of some UI sketches I drew. A Proposed Feature List will be coming soon, as will a blog for the project.

I don't understand this completely, it seems impractical, I'm not quite sure what the purpose is, and I'm probably going to end up participating on some level.

I mean, even if you discount the purpose, this would be a good learning experience, since I expect to have to do this kind of work in the future *continues to bury face in "C++ All-In-One for Dummies"*

Let's play it by year. I'm pretty busy right now, but if this project gets going and there becomes an opportunity for me to help, I'd consider it.

You are welcome to join up any time! I'm working on the Sourceforge page now, and will soon have a UI demo you can run that a friend of mine made a long, long time ago.

I'm also delving into some programming books, but at present I do not foresee me as being a programmer. I know far too little and have no good resources to draw from. I'm reading two LaMoth books, or rather I have two and am trying to read one, "Secret of the Game Programming Gurus." My problem here isn't that I am unwilling to learn. It's that due to what Microsoft has done with DirectX these good old books, which I have easy access to, and some of which I even own, I am unable to follow the examples and get any code to execute. I tried using a wrapper called SlimDX but that made things worse. I'm thinking that XNA/OpenGL/C# is the way to go, but I'm not sure. If I could just find a book or video tutorial that covered basic 3D game creation, which also gave me code I could run and execute successfully, and taught me in the area of C#, OpenGL or Direct 3D v9-10 (can't run 11 on my system) and possibly XNA, then I would be set. I can learn this, I can code, I understand the basics. With the right resources I could help out as a coder and get the ball rolling. I'm still looking, but for now I'm only the guy that perceived the ball and am attempting to describe it in detail to others.

      Links coming soon!

Hey, good luck with your project. I do 3D modelling and character animator as my career, but this thread reminded me of this new indie title called Love. It looks fairly good. It's a massively multiplayer game, where you can create anything you want and explore strange procedurally generated content with a impressionist visual style.

      Love Trailer - YouTube

I think it'd be insane not to use the extremely awesome tools that are already available. But if this is the way you want to go, then good luck.

Thank you for your encouragement and the link! I recognize that avatar too - Riven fan perhaps?

Proposal for the integrated world builder/terrain editor within DREAM is now up. It's very brief and to the point. Watch out for spelling mistakes!

A few final updates here, some may have been covered. There is now a working WIKI for DREAM at Sourceforge:
      https://sourceforge.net/p/dreamgcs/wiki/Home/

      Forums too:
      https://sourceforge.net/p/dreamgcs/discussion/

New articles in the WIKI include my idea for something I have called a, "Vertex Cloud."

Forum post at Dream In Code (following play of Coincidences here):
DREAM Needs You! Looking For VOLUNTEER C#/XNA/OpenGL Programmers - Post A Job | Dream.In.Code

Finally the official homepage/blog is here. Go there to get an overview of any updates:

You should be able to contact me here or there to join up if you are interested. I would advise you sign up there and contact me if you wish to join. I won't be as active on the net for a few days, but I am working on DREAM so I will find your messages in a reasonable time at Sourceforge.

The editor's name has now been changed to Lucidity, so the engine would be DREAM.

Learning how to program starting with Python. May code a terrain engine that could be incorporated into DREAM later after it has been converted from Python to C#.

If anyone here wants to learn how to program, check out Python. You can not imagine the amount of good books out there, YouTube videos and the size of the user community! Plus most any code you see for Python in a book should compile and run, without issues like you find the the M$ languages.
