It turns out the synchronization between mind and body isn't as close as we might expect. The body doesn't know exactly when your mind has fallen asleep, and for survival reasons would be dangerous for the body to go to sleep before the mind has.
So what happens is the body tests the mind to see if it's asleep. If you lay with a silent mind very still for about 25 minutes and are nicely relaxed, your body will eventually send a very strong signal to your mind saying "I'm uncomfortable, please shift your position in bed."
But this is just a ruse! The body is not really uncomfortable, it's just testing to see if it can get a response from the mind. If you ignore this signal, your body waits a few seconds and says "Hmm, the mind must have gone to sleep. Time for me to do the same."
At that point you will literally feel a wave of heaviness come over the body. This wave takes about 5 seconds to complete, and when it's done your body has fallen asleep. This wave is a very odd and distinct feeling. It's something you can't miss. Before you get the uncomfortable sensation you may also feel a little dizzy as if there's a balloon in your upper body and head that's expanding against the inside of your skull and skin. It's not very much pressure but it is there.
There will be no doubt that your body has gone to sleep. If you have silicone putty earplugs in it will be easy to listen to your hearing shift from physical hearing into real time hearing.
So the trick is to lie still until out of nowhere you get a sudden and strong urge to shift your position. It will not be easy to resist it; the body will be somewhat adamant. But if you persist in your deception and fool the body into thinking your mind is asleep then it will follow, and then there you are in mind awake/body asleep!
• You'll have the best luck with this on somewhat less sleep than you usually get then do your attempt in the morning or during your afternoon REM cycle at about 2:00 or 3:00. The first time I got this to work I had only gotten about 3-4 hours of sleep the night before, maybe half my usual sleep time.
• For the time you're laying still be completely still, including your eyes. Don't move your eyes even to look at hypnagogics.
• It's very easy for the mind the fall asleep doing this, you may benefit using a self-repeating timer as a safety net to keep your mind awake.

And it was all thanks to this post. I counted down from 100, and at 50 I felt this funny feeling on my left foot, but I remembered "don't do anything, it might be a test" so I ignored it and that buzzing noise came and I felt the waves! I'm so excited, seeing that this is the first progress I made in WILD since I started attempting 2 months ago. My efforts have been receding recently, but this is a huge moral boost. No I KNOW I can do this with more work. I didn't get past this stage because I haven't really read what to do after SP but I'm going to work on it. I can't wait!

I just started lurking again a few days ago and found this thread. I was like, okay, this seems like its worth a try. So I tried it last night and got fantastic results!!! I had 4 LDs in one night! Thanks very much! This technique gave me the confidence to get back into LDing again!

For example, in one of my early WILD attempts, I started noticing that I would only get to the sleep state if I did not move AT ALL for a long enough amount of time. If I moved my eye even a little wee bit consciously, my sleep state would be further postponed. This method you describe is truly the simple answer for WILD success, as myself can attest to. I use "simple" lightly, because although it seems to come easy for me, I know of many people who find it almost IMPOSSIBLE to stay completely still for the required time. You really need a lot of patience and dedication to attain complete stillness for just long enough.
Happy lucid dreaming!

That sense that i could move my limbs if i wanted was gone...

I imagined myself (eyes closed) running out of the house, and though I sometimes happened to open my eyes and saw myself in my bed, I had very long detailed and vivid dreams. They seemed to last for hours, maybe even days.

I was still in the same bed in my dream, so I jumped up out of bed. I guess I got a little too excited because I woke myself up.
This works! I haven't had a lucid dream in nearly a year. I can't wait to try this again tonight! Thanks!

I read this method of Lucid dreaming yesterday evening, and at about 4.00am woke up and decided to give it a go.
I was laying on my side and began to feel quite uncomfortable but stuck with it then i felt vibrations that was followed by a wave of relaxation that swept across my body, next thing that happend can best be described by me as seeing about a dozen different pattened wallpapers appearing one after the other with about a one second pause between each, then i found myself observing a cartoon type scene i kind of stepped into this and then was in a full lucid dream.
The dream only lasted about two minutes even though i rubbed my hands together a couple of times to try to secure it, i travelled about a 100 yards or so in the dream world observing the dcs etc.
I would like to say a very big thanks for posting this method , up until last night all my lds have been dilds this was also only the second time i have ever had any vibrations that i have been aware of, and on the first time which was some months ago they led to nothing.
I am really happy with last nights results and will be trying this in future.
