      Lets Volunteer!

I'm an Architect, Artist & Designer. I'm classically trained, but nowadays I work with both physical and digital media (damn this modern world). If you guys need any help with specific stuff, I would be happy to help. I'm always mad busy, so I doubt I could organize anything too complicated. If you give me specifics, I will crank it out.

Physical media I normally stick to Charcoal and Oilbars (messier the better, right?). I'm also experienced with pen/ink, photorealistic pencil rendering, watercolor, ect.

Digital media, I can rock Photoshop, Corel Paint, Autocad, Sketchup, Maya.

I normally slam together a mix of whatever it takes to get the job done. No time to be a snob. I'll dig through my portfolio tonight to find some sample stuff that I don't mind getting stolen, and that I can post without getting sued.

I do not do any web design or coding. None of that adult stuff for me. Just the coloring books Its been a while since I did anything hardcore in Maya or Sketchup, but its like riding a bicycle, right?

I've been avoiding volunteering here for a while because I always have so many projects on the boards. Time to stop being a dick, i guess. Let me know if anyones working on anything fun they want some help with.

They were great...I just had other plans. I'm definitely not an office 8-5 kinda girl.

8-5 office sucks the life out of everything. Doesn't matter how much you love it. Just make shit and sell it. Or partner up with someone to make shit and sell it. You're in a field where you are actually selling your skills, not just your time. You can do things that few people on the planet know how to do.

Plus, its one of the few fields that tolerates... eccentric... people. If a client walks into my studio and finds me with a beer in my hand, 3D glasses on my face, and a melted box of crayons in the microwave, they just say, "This guy must be gooood."

Its just me and one other guy in our office. Then we have two people who work mainly from home and come in once a week to pick up work. I sort of work back and forth at home and in the office. Working from home always sounds good in theory. I just make such a legendary mess whenever I get into something. I need the space to make a mess at my house and at my office. I can't limit myself to just one location.

OMG, I never thought I'd meet (or know) someone who uses Skethcup! That's great, I got a copy of that a loooong time ago, complete with the QuickTime tutorials and it looks like such a fun program to work with. I fiddled around with it for a bit but never really had a project to use it for Same goes for Maya. I tend to end up becoming comfortable with applications that are not the industry standard. For 3D, I'm quite comfortable in Strata.

But again, I don't have much demand for 3D, unfortunately.

We use it a lot for Architectural Design work. Its ease of use makes it handy for those times when you have to modify things in the middle of a meeting. You can really appreciate it when you compare it to something like Maya, which is a nasty bloated beast.

I hate this trend for all software to try to be all inclusive. Everyone wants to monopoize the industry, so you end up with these bloated programs that have all kinds of functionality you will never use. Makes you want to move to public domain programs that specialize in doing one thing well.

Its only going to get worse. Autodesk just bought Maya, so I'm sure they have some sinister plans to ruin it like they do with everyhing they touch.

And sketchup is still free to download, I think. Google bought it, and is distributing it for free to use with their Google Earth plans for world domination.

Oooh, very interesting. Wonder if I should check to see if it's been upgraded. No idea which version I have.

Yes, I agree about Maya, it is pretty overwhelming- at least the interface is. When an app gives you the option to customize the layout, color and mode of the interface you should approach with caution. AfterEffects is a little like this as well, but not nearly as complex. I use AE a lot though, so maybe it's just a matter of practicing. I went through a 3D phase - had copies of Carrara, Blender, Inspire(?), and this one that was only a modeler which required a separate renderer (this was back in the early 90's I think). Strata stuck with me - friendly interface and quick results. So glad they stayed in business and keep upgrading their application.

What makes Sketchup unique, in my opinion, is not only it's ease of use, but the 'look' of your final product - that sketchy, mockup look. Very important when showing a client. Anything that's too polished comes across as a "final" and therefore they don't look at it as a concept and judge it as a finished piece.

They had me working with 3d studio max at my last job. I hated it. I used to bring my laptop into work so I could use my Cinema 4d, which I like a million times more.

Yeah, Aquanina, I try to stay away from 3d Studio Max. I'm hoping it will lose its foothold in the next couple years while I ignore it. I had to learn it back in school, and I remember it being very clunky and archaic feeling. I've never tried Cinema 4d beyond messing with Bodypaint 3D a little. Is it everything its cracked up to be? I've heard its pretty amazing.

Tornado Joe, I remember modeling in the early 90s. I think I was stuck with Infini-D and Raytracer. I remember thinking how it was going to change the world. I guess it did a little.

You guys are making me miss modeling and animating. I don't do it much anymore, and I had to make a painful career decision to leave it behind when I switched from Game Level Design to Architecture. Just too much advancement in technology to even begin to keep up with it now on top of everything else.

Ah yes, Raytracer. I think the modeler I used was called Swift (not to be confused with the Flash one - Swift3D). I used Infidi-D briefly when I was working for a package design and display company once (the new director was trying to get everyone to switch over to that from Strata).

Yup, I kinda miss doing 3D stuff too, but the thing about 3D computer art is that it all ends up having that computer 'look' in the end. It's either hyper-realistic (like in car commercials), or cartoonish (like in animated films). Everything in between is... cheesy. Like in those Saturday morning cartoons or local used car commercials - LOL!

Isn't Studio Max the industry standard for gaming? I heard it was like the Photoshop of 3D character animation. You got a website or samples of your Game Level Design work? I assume Architecture is programing, no?
