OK, I decided to post this short story I made at our English course. I really want to thank Gothlark for the idea for this text as I wanted to write something according to dreaming. Thank you, Gothlark! This may be better or worse as I wrote it in the last possible evening in ~2 hours. I hope you have the time and patience to read this through.
The people in this text don't refer to any existing persons, and the names are just the first that came in my mind. Any comments, thoughts, ratings etc of this short story are greatly appreciated!
I hope you enjoy this!
Dreaming?
Jason was in trouble. He was in the middle of a desert. He didn’t remember how or why he had ended up in there, but one thing he knew for sure was that he had no water with him. Suddenly his eye caught a golden flash. He saw it was a golden lamp, and picked it up. He rubbed the lamp, and it started to smoke heavily. From the smoke appeared a genie.
“Thank you for releasing me, master,” said the genie. “To show you my gratitude I want to give you three wishes. You might wish whatever you want to.”
“In that case, I’d like to get some water first. Actually I need a whole jug of water”
The genie snapped his fingers and handed Jason a jug of water. He drank it gratefully, and said. “Now as I have two more wishes left, I want to be immortal and almighty.”
The genie looked disappointed. “You know, that’s not a good wish at all, but my duty is to fill your wish. For now on you will be in eternal dream where you can control everything around you.”
The lamp and the genie disappeared, and Jason was alone in the desert. He thought what the genie had said and decided to try if he really could control this so-called dream. He jumped in the air and started to fly. It felt amazing. The whole dream was so real and vivid that it was hard to believe it wasn’t reality.
After flying some time he arrived to coast. There was a small bungalow near the shoreline, and a pretty woman in the yard.
“Hello there, beauty,” said Jason as he landed behind the woman, “What’s your name?”
“My name is Nina, and I live here,” she told with a soft, warm voice that would melt even the coldest heart.
That was it. Jason decided that she would become his wife in this world. The house wasn’t too shiny though, but it wasn’t a problem. As he could control everything in this world, he turned the bungalow into the most splendid palace he could ever imagine.
“This is for you, sweetheart,” he said. “That’s where we will live for the eternity.”
Now that Jason had got the hang of the things in dream world he started to enjoy his state of living. This was just about what he had always wanted – a beautiful wife, a splendid dwelling and, the most important, the might over everything. He was able to satisfy all even his most secret passions.
Anyway, after a while he started to understand that he really was dreaming, and everything, including other people, was just a creation of his own mind. He found out that they didn’t have their own consciousnesses, and, due to that, it was almost impossible to have intellectual discussion with them.
As the time went on, he started to get bored, as he couldn’t make up any new ways to have fun. He had already done everything he could ever imagine. He missed his real family, and he missed even his boss shouting to him at work. Soon he decided that it would be time to wake up into reality.
Jason tried to open his eyes, but all he could feel was his dream eyes. He closed them and tried again, and again it had no effect. Now he started to feel worried. What if he could never wake up? What if he was imprisoned in this conscious dream? Now he remembered that the genie told that the dream would be eternal.
He went to his bedroom feeling depressed. Suddenly he noticed that there was a new bedside table. He opened the drawer and found a golden lamp just like the one in the desert. He rubbed it and, as the smoke had gone, he saw the same genie.
“What you still want?” Asked the genie. “You already got your three wishes, isn’t that enough?”
“You!” Jason shouted. “I want you to let me out of this dream, now!”
“Did you start to regret your wish? Sorry, but rules are rules, and I can’t grant you any more wishes. I would be in serious troubles if I did.”
“Listen to me, you damn spirit. If you help me to wake up, I won’t bother you ever again. You can trust me.”
“Well, maybe I can do that, but you must tell no-one about it. It would be a disaster if other people started to demand extra wishes just because you got one. Now you will wake up, but you can always come back here when you dream.”
As the genie disappeared, Jason started to feel that he was slowly waking up. The scenery was getting foggy, and he started to be aware of his physical body that was lying in his bed. His vision was getting even foggier and soon it was all white. He opened his eyes and did a reality check to make sure he was awake. “For now on”, he thought, “I will ignore any golden lamps, just in case…”
Thank you for having the patience for reading this
