      My Monster

Ok so I decided to devote a whole new topic to my senior capstone project because it is a MONSTER and is why you will usually catch me on Dream Views at 2am, 4am, 5am...that's right...because I am up all night working on this damn thing.

Anyway...I'd love some feedback. Here are just some shots from my animatic (or storyboard)...nothing is animated yet but its all there and ready. You aren't really supposed to "get" the story yet, so don't ask about it. My storyboard has about 100 shots, here are just 14.

Hmmm...no feedback yet. Ok I'll give a little info about my project.

Here's what is being published in the thesis project booklet:

This short animation revolves around the life of a young Palestinian girl who has seen her family taken away from her by the Israeli occupation. My animation deals with freedom from opression, or lack there of and illustrates actual incidents that are taking place in the West Bank and Gaza Strip on a daily basis. Children are being murdered as they play innocently in the playgrounds...picked off by snipers like animals. People are beaten, arrested, or murdered for no real reasons. Women and children are bulldozed, still inside their houses as the Israeli tanks and bulldozers infiltrate the refugee camps and raze everything in site. I would like to dedicate my project to Rachel Corrie, an American girl who was flattened by a bulldozer as she was protesting the unlawful destruction of a Palestinian home...along with everyone else who has given their lives to defend the Palestinian people.

Cool I like the last frame the best, it's pretty depressing too. I think it'll turn out pretty well. Post it when you're finished

The whole premise sounds very interesting, not only the amazing artwork, but the fact that the story itself has a statement and a real message, and it's not just about some fish who lost his way home or twatever...

You are doing a kickass job nina! Keep it up! I am sure the whole proyect is going to turn out to be amazing!!!
      If I hadn't made me
I'd be more inclined to bow
Powers that be would have swallowed me up
But that's more than I can allow...

      Eeek, politics!

Seriously talking, your project seems great. The pictures look like from 2-year-old computer game though so they're not so fascinating as they seem to be as preview pictures. Anyway, they're amazing considering that you've made them alone . I could never do that. How long do you think you've spent time on each frame?

That girl looks so scary, especially her eyelids and stuff. First I thought she was in some prison but when I took a look at the last pictures I realized that it was a shattered house.

Your project seems so huge. How long is it going to be?

Thanks for the feeback guys. Yeah Mushroom...she has flashbacks to when she was playing in the playground with her little brother. I wanted there to be elements in the story that people from any world or any ethnicity could relate to. Like the teddy bear especially. Also, when it pans out in the end you will see lots of other destroyed buildings nearby and a bulldozer.

What exactly do you mean by that Harri? I really wasn't going for a photo-realistic feel if that's what you mean. I really like the whole Tim Burton style of animation. And I wanted her to look kinda scary, gaunt...like she has been through hell...and she has. Which is why she has those big eyes, etc.

It will probably be about 4 minutes long and a few hundred megs when its done. Full quality DV, 29.97 fps.

I'm not meaning that they should be photo-realistic. I really like the style very much. I just mean that they weren't just as detailed as I expected them to be. I think if you take a look at the 2nd and 6th pictures you'll see what I mean. The drawing distance is quite short, the textures (especially ground) aren't so lively and the blue/grey thing in the 6th picture is quite plain-looking. Those 2 pictures actually give me the impression of an old computer game. Also, in the last picture the ruins are in the middle of nothing and some lines look a bit too straight.

Don't take any offense, though. I just wanted to talk straight and unfortunately that's what I thought. You're doing amazing work with your "monster" and you definitely have something to say with it. Those images really succeed in giving the hopeless, frustrated, negleted, lone impression.

I think it's great that you have the time and the patience to do something like this.

Holy cow!!! I love my dial-up. I may have as much time invested in this "Monster" as you do, waiting for the pictures to load.
It takes so long it is hard for me to get the picture so to speak. It is fragmented for me.
But That is initially what I thought Aquanina --> "Tim Burton style of animation."
I think that is a good style for the theme as a young girls flashbacks. But agian I can't really put the whole story together.

Are you going to tell us your grade?

Well actually it's interesting because the 2 images that you picked out are actually flashbacks that she will have. She is sitting in her little corner and has a bright flashback to her little brother when she picks up his teddy bear. The flashbacks will not be animated realistically, they will be more like a series of stills sort of blurred together, and I wanted them to look really blown out. So there is a reason for that. That's why they are foggy and the textures are kinda off.

So basically she is sitting there, and the objects around her spark these flasbacks. One of her brother being shot in the schoolyard. The broken glasses flashback to a memory of her father being arrested. And the charred apron in the rubble flashes back to a memory she had with her mom...who you are supposed to infer was killed inside her home when it was demolished. (basic story line, so there you go)

Also, I haven't gotten past a certain point as far as modeling. Like I said, when you pan out in the end there will be other buildings and rubble around her...and bulldozers and tanks and such I just haven't gotten that far yet.

Sheesh, it's a work in progress. But, hey...thanks for the feedback hun.

Thanks for clarifying those things, Nina.

Do you have even a slight idea about when it will be completely done and ready?

I need to start with some high poly 3D art, yours is so nice and I want in on that action.

Wow those look awesome Nina. I look forward to seeing it as well, though I won't be able to appreciate the political message much, it looks to be a great work of art.

Wow, Aquanina, your computer artwork is really nice.
I know someone who I can ask to see how you could take that much information and make it webfriendly. I will look into it tonight.

I found out that you can go about in a few ways. First of all, it is not good to do 5 gigs because it will take the average user a very long time to download it.

      So:

1.) Take it and make it a lower quality.
2.) Upload to a News Group and let everyone know where it is and have a limited window time to download it.

On my computer, it takes 2 and half hours to download 4.5 at 700 Kb. An average user usually has 100-200 Kb. So you can imagine how long it will take many others. And it will be very expensive to host on a server, but most News Groups are free.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions, let me know

Holy, those shots look awesome. I'm just wondering what program you used to make those. I don't know a single thing about animation and would like to.

Awww Dew Dust thanks for asking about that for me. I know I just have to rerender it out with different compression settings and run it through some filters and stuff to make it smaller I guess...it will just be a pain in the butt. Oh well. And I could just host it on my website or my mod account here (temporarily).

Thanks I use Cinema 4D for all my 3D stuff and then I put it all together in after effects. I have more art here: http://www.dreamviews.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7305
