2Dimensional Art with an Extra Dimension

I awoke early today to being my project. I was to turn a 2D photo into a 3D piece of art.
Comment and let me know what you think.

Did you bother to look at the close-ups?

Why did you use terrible .PNG compression?

The legs look silly. The rest is pretty cool. I give you one and a half thumbs up.

*puts on official design critique hat* ...Hmm...not very effective. The hair splash thing makes no sense and does nothing to make the image look more 3d. I think the original image was a poor choice...a fashion model? bleh...and she looked more 3d before you flattened her out by removing the drop shadow and putting her on a white background. The little cuts you made don't do much at all...if that's the route you're going to take you should have cut her up completely into 3d blocks or something. But random little slices do nothing. The floating shadow you added at the bottom is not consistent with the lighting. I'm not sure that dismembering her was that effective either at making anything look 3d, it just seems odd. Basically you're trying to do small fiddly things but you're missing the big picture imo. But you're probably a complete novice at this so if that's the case then don't take any of the above personally or anything.

Well I like it a lot more than Nina seems to!

First let me say I don't really understand the assignment. Turn a 2d photo into 3d art? This would mean either making a sculpture from it or rendering it in CGI basically - unless it means to make it LOOK like 3d art. So rather than critique it on those terms I'll just evaluate it in general.

I'm not familiar with the artist you based this on, but I see a strong Dali influence. I do have to agree wit Nina about the shadow underneath... it doesn't seem to be spatially related to the image quite right. And I also think you could have gone farther with it - more slices or bigger ones or something. It's so subtle it takes a while to notice it. But this said, I do like the slice idea. But looking closely at it, it looks like her forearm has a sharp edge along the bottom. I don't know if this was intentional - the slice doesn't show the correct shape a forearm actually has... but this might be intended, to add to the surrealism idk. And while I'm being a bit negative about the lower parts, the thing that stands out the most to me as wrong is the lower edge you added to the legs. It's not horizontal.. if it was we wouldn't be able to see the underneath side at all - the image is shot from a camera height level with her face. Of course the cut could be at an angle like that, but it somehow doesn't look like it is.

Sorry, I didn't mean to just say negative things... overall I like it, but as I looked close I started to notice all these things. Heh, now I see how Nina ended up saying what she did.

i must say though, I do like the splash coming from her hair. To me that's the most successful thing you added. It makes it nicely surreal and adds interest and action.

I'm not bothered by the choice of image to begin with - true if you were trying to make an artistic statement then a fashion model would be a poor choice, but if you're going for illustration or something there's nothing wrong with it. Heck, it's the kind of thing an illustrator will end up doing anyway!

This is part 1/3 of the full project.

I did not search for the stock for too long. I just searched through what I had on my computer. I have like 15GB of design resources. I decided this would be a nice one to use.
The final of this is going to have more of what you do see here, including splashes and more of the lines you see on her skirt.

As for the 3D, it wasn't necessarily supposed to be actual 3D I just wanted the effect. I also plan on adding some vector lines, much like the ones on the vista wallpapers, (different shapes and colors of course).

      (Part of my inspiration)

As for calling me a novice, don't until you have seen my works.

That's not very nice. You can give critique constructively, otherwise why even comment.

There's no point in saving an unfinished project as a lossless Bitmap. I don't need a high quality 1/3 finished image.

That's why you save it as a jpg?

I agree, I don't really like it that much. The random yellow line is weird.
So is the random cuts. You should finish it first, if that's what you meant by 1/3 of the project. Everything is just random. And I hate using that word, but it really is.

Not that your photoshopping skills are bad, but you need some direction, that's all.

Also I thought it was Kylie Minogue? Not a fashion model?

I didn't like what was in the op. But if you are planning to do more too it then I will shut my mouth until I see the final.

As for marvo's comment. I think that is insanely rude. Honestly the pictures in the op are better then what I can do with digital art. But if I wanted to open a thread about my attempts your comments would be really discouraging. But please forgive us for not being as great as you. Oh great lord of art.

His work might be decent, but his approach to criticism isn't. That's why I called him a bad artist. If you had read my other post, you'd know I liked the piece, apart from the one obvious flaw and the weird compression choice.

Some people just haven't learned how to use constructive criticism effectively. This was one of the greatest things I learned in design school. I agree with your statement Marvo, though I don't think it makes him a bad artist per say, just an inexperienced one. After viewing the portfolio site, I stick by my original statement that the OP is a novice, or at least has not had the benefit of professional graphic design training.

Agreed Nina. It's also one of the most important lessons I learned from taking art classes in college. People started freaking out the first time the instructor started doing critiques, and he said basically "if you want back-patting show it to your mom. If you want to learn to get better as an artist, then let's look at this realistically". And he also made the rest of us all critique each other's art, so we'd learn how to do it constructively rather than making judgements.

It can still be rough.. trust me I know!! I still remember one critique day when I had been up all night finishing my piece, fueled entirely on too much caffeine, sped all the way to school and walked in 10 minutes late and had to tack it up o the wall right in front of everybody while critiques were going on, and then I got a lot of harsh advice. In my sleep-deprived and overcaffieinated state I was weak as a little girl, and as stoically as I tried to take it, I got my feelings hurt.

... It's so much nicer to get critique on the web!

Well said. That's how it was where I went to school as well. We used to have class critiques in all my studio classes at least once a week. Then at the end of each quarter we would have to individually go into a classroom and present (and defend) or project, design, and thinking process to the entire design staff, including the head of design department. It was sooo freakin intense. They were harsh as hell, but it was such a humbling experience, and I am such a better person for it. Since I really have no desire to pursue design as a career though, providing and receiving constructive criticism must be one of the most valuable things I took out of the experience. It will help you in every area of life. Especially since people love giving criticism! So if you can appreciate it, then you will always have an edge over your coworkers, no matter what it is that you are doing.

True, it is definitely not something he can't improve on. I took a look at his work earlier too, definitely agree with you on him being a novice. Knows his way around photoshop, but still got a long way to go

I'm all for criticism, however, when I feel that someone is critiquing me, more than the actual art, I close myself off from that specific person(s).
Everything I know about graphic design is self-taught. I turned 16 a few months ago and have only had the chance to take one "computer graphics" class in high school, the reason I put it in quotations is because we were "taught" on eMacs, with Photoshop (CS1? I think). In there she taught us how to, be stuff you could be doing in Picnik, like, B&W vs. Gray scale, nonsense like that.

Artistic skill is not only what you produce, but also how you go about improving your skill. It wraps in on it self, you see. Eventually, the better you get, you start to realise how much you don't know/can't quite do yet. This can be said about a lot of things, but it's especially true in graphic design.

How is your piece coming along?

Then I must be good, I can't do anything. -_-

Seriously though, I understand what you are saying, I have no one around here really to compete with, my school is full of computer illiterates, so I'm not particularly used to the criticism, but will learn to embrace it. Thank you Marvo(:
