Chained Memories: Night Ten (Mythology related, mild language, mild sexual conduct) FINAL CHAPTER
Night Ten
“Epim…etheus?” I breathed, looking as my best male friend stood in front of me. “What are you…doing here?”
“Calleah told me you were home,” he said, sitting on the edge of the bed. “What happened? You look as white as your walls.”
I tried to speak, explain at least, but no sound came from my lips and I closed then pulling my knees to my chest.
Why me? Why was I reserved this Hell?
Why was it me who had to be the reincarnation of another girl who wasn’t even supposed to exist?! And why in all of Heaven and Hell did it have to be me having a doomed daughter?!
Why couldn’t I be like everyone else? Worry about test grades and what I’m going to be wearing to Homecoming and Prom? Why couldn’t I be like everyone else and have normal boy trouble?
Why was it me who was chosen this ‘fate’? It just wasn’t fair!
“Pandora,” Epimetheus’s voice said, pulling me from my wordless tirade. “What’s wrong?”
“Tired,” I managed. “I’m just…tired. Could you leave? I’m sorry. Nothing against you, I mean. I’m just…really tired.”
Epimetheus nodded and left without another word and I was left alone to my thoughts. They quickly escalated to the height of insanity before I passed out from the stress.
I woke up, muscles stiff, and blinked, trying to focus. Yesterday…well, the last time I woke up, I had woken to find out my best friend was Helios’s mother and she did want to kill me.
My mind was foggy as I sat up and looked into emerald eyes.
“Death!” I gasped, falling out of my bed. He watched me as I tried to stand. “What are you doing here?! You could be killed just by being here!”
“Pandora,” he said, helping me stand. “It’s Pain.”
I blinked as he held me up.
“Pandora?” Helios’s voice came from just outside of my room. “Are you awake?”
“What about Pain?” I whispered, holding onto Death. “What’s going on?”
“Pain isn’t dead,” he answered quietly. “But he needs help. He needs you, Pandora.”
I shook my head in disbelief.
“How can I help him?” I said almost silently. “I hurt evils. I capture them! How can I help Pain?”
“You need to come with me,” he said calmly.
“Pandora?” Helios said, entering the room. His gaze fell to Death and he glared. “You! What are you doing here?! Get away from her!”
“Helios,” I said, putting myself in front of Death. “Stay away.”
Helios paused, disbelief and hurt in his eyes as I spoke.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered, reaching towards him. “I’m so sorry Helios. But…it’s just…I—”
“Don’t,” he said, his voice nearly inaudible. “I don’t want to hear it.”
“I’m so sorry,” I said thickly. Tears filled my eyes as I turned to Death. “I’m so sorry Helios. Please forgive me.”
“Never,” he whispered. “Not until you choose me.”
I turned and he met my gaze, tears of his own in his eyes as he glared at me.
“I hate you,” he said coldly. “I loved you, protected you. And you fell in love for the things that are going to kill you. I hate you, Pandora.”
My breathing labored and I took a step back, nearly falling. Death held me up and I shook my head before turning my body towards Death.
Selene had won. She had her son back and I was going to die. How perfect it was for her.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered, tears falling down my cheeks. “I truly am.”
Helios said nothing.
My gaze rose to Death’s and I smiled sadly before wrapping my arms around him.
“I’m ready.”
Death wrapped his arms around me and, in the next moment, we were airborne.
My tears flew around me and I didn’t try to stop them.
It was too late for Helios. But, maybe, it wouldn’t be too late for Pain.
Maybe what I had seen all those weeks ago would happen. Perhaps I would side with the evils.
God help everyone if I did.
