Maui Photography; Sunsets and More - Nikon D7000

As some of you may know from my threads in years past... I go to Maui at least once a year with my family. These were taken with a Nikon D7000. The lens was a Tamron SP 17-50mm F2.8
Settings were pretty much normal. Most of these shots are unedited, but I played with a few of the sunsets in iPhoto (nothing fancy!)

Enjoy... comments and critiques welcome as always! These are my favorites... I took quite a few more. If you guys want some more sunset angles, or some more landscapes of the scenery, just ask!

I've taken a couple of digital camera photography classes and some photoshop classes at the college; so might I just say I think you have a great eye for photography, particularly with those sunset pictures? Also, very nice frame-up with the rocks and the water, about a quarter of the way down from the top? I'm not too into "building" pictures like the ones you have of what I assume is a hotel or resort of some kind, but even I liked those!

Very good job. Personally, I'd like to see some more of your sunset shots, those are awesome--particularly the one where you managed to get the halo around the sun halfway down--with the silhouetted palm-trees!

Thanks, that really means a lot! I've only taken one real photography class, and that was in high school. I've always loved taking pictures though, and it helps to have a good camera that can do a lot of the work for you (I don't shoot totally manual).

Here are some more shots! I'm glad you enjoyed them!!

LOL, that last picture reminds me of the TV show Survivor!

That picture with the lone tree is really cool--it's too bad you caught the corner of the palm leaves of the other tree just below it, because a lone tree with the water backdrop like that makes for a super dramatic shot!

Have you explored using Photoshop to play around with those? It doesn't take terribly long to learn to do some really awesome stuff or even just fix pictures if there's something about them you don't like. Plus, you can add some great effects too, add color casts, remove color casts, all kinds of cool stuff.

Yes, I do have photoshop; I just haven't had time to fully learn the software inside and out. I used iPhoto for some of the basic editing.

Keep up the good work, and keep practicing. 17mm is a good place to do landscape fun with-- 50mm at f/2.8 is great for portraiture and storytelling as well, and I think you should play with that more. Being able to capture things with a thinner depth of field lets you play with the focus so much more and I think you'll be able to do some cool things with it. Good stuff ~

I really liked the one with the little boat, palm trees, and slight orange background. Also, I think at the same location, with the palm trees and the sun has a half circle, with the more orange hue. All pictures are good of course, but I liked those two in particular. Thanks for sharing!
