I have been so busy with school I feel like I haven't been active enough on DV again. I am in my final semester of my animation degree. If I can't be active with on topic stuff I might as well post some art! I am taking a class on zbrush (a sculpting software), a game asset design class, an animation drawing class, and a senior project class. I am taking the animation drawing class a second time so I get to choose my own project! I chose a dwarf fortress themed web comic I have been thinking about for a long time. For the senior project class we are making a 3D animated short film! I will post my progress from these projects periodically and any other random stuff I make!

For my first post I think I will share the first completed zbrush project I have made! It's a monster from the game dwarf fortress called a beak dog. Beak dogs are large gorilla sized wingless birds that goblins some times ride into battle. They, for some reason, have rainbow skin. I modeled this based on a image I saw online. While I was painTing the colors onto it I acidentally had smoothing turned on and smoothed some of the details off the model. Nooby mistake. I think I will go back and repaint it later but I still think it looks pretty cool!

My first impression was a spore creation.

I've always appreciated artists who can take something that is abstracted or simplified (dwarf fortress is all text based if I recall correctly) and bring life to it by showing what it would look like more realistically. Not that I have anything against abstraction, I just think it's interesting to see something that you normally view very abstract and simplified in a more realistic and tangible manner.

I know its just his head but if full metal alchemist made a print on your childhood or if you were a fan of the show than its no surprise that you instantly think of him. :3 Very cool.

The assignment only requires I model a helmet but I'm going to work my way down and hopefully have the whole suit modeled. :)

I had to take a short break from Dreamviews to get through finals but all of my projects turned out great! Since I graduated I have been working really hard on over hauling my portfolio website and omg I might have just lined up a job! Now I can be a bit less stressed and can start posting again. :) I didn't have time to give Alphonse a body but here are the final versions of those models.

I did a test of a slightly different style. I'm not a fan of the composition but it was really just to experiment with the pixelated style since the comic is inspired by the game Dwarf Fortress. The style should lend itself to short animated gifs which I will mess around with next time.

I have been Dungeon Mastering a game of D&D for my friends. I did some rough sketches of their characters and their goblin squire. Now that I have their designs figured out I plan to make custom character sheets for them with portraits painted on them. The group is Phogoth the half-orc barbarian, Athelya the elf rogue, Natalia the Sorceress, and Quetz the Dragonborn paladin.

My dad showed me his great grandpas antique compass set and I just had to make some cool designs with them. They still work great!

I did some math and doodles for an isometric game I'm working on. It is a simple rpg to accompany certain sections of my comic. I need to figure out how each voxel is represented in code and the only way to figure it out is to doodle in photoshop and read up about axonometric projection.

I finally got around to releasing the first images for my comic. If you want to leave input for the little kobold you will have to make a bay12 account.

This style is really fun to animate in. Because the edges are suppose to be jagged you can get away with a lot of little mistakes. Really small details can take a long time though. So far it looks like this kea is smarter than the protagonist but that just means they have a lot of room for character development!

Your idea of making a webcomic with a videogame sprite style and including games and animations kind of reminds me of Homestuck. Keep up the good work.

Be sure not to start your protagonist off too dumb or immature. (There's nothing wrong with what you have here.) I'm a huge fan of character progression and characters becoming smarter/stronger/wiser with time but starting too low can mean people might just find the character annoying or unlikeable. So make sure they have some redeeming qualities from the get-go while leaving room for improvement. ;)

Thanks for the feedback! It is inspired by the comic The Littlest Cheese Maker which itself is inspired by Homestuck. Grawr is very simple minded but I don't think he is actually stupid. Now that Grawr's motivations are laid out I will keep as close as possible to what people input as commands with preference to actions that develop him it to a fully fledged hero. Pretty soon he will run into more civilized characters for him to bounce his personality off of which will be a turning point in the story I think.

The comic is going well! It is great practice to pump out these updates and come up with characters on the fly. My favorite so far is Grizzly Bear Man.

In Dwarf Fortress there are randomly generated monsters called forgotten beasts. One showed up in the comic that is described as a huge anlyosaurs that undulates rhythmically.

I want to start another comic based on Dungeons and Dragons. I want all the commenting and voting to be on the website itself so that will require some more advanced web programming. I'm probably going to have to wait until I can pay someone to help me with it. I still need to figure out the art style too.
