I really like the art-style Surrealism many might know from painters as Salvador Dali or Magritte. To me this really is close to dreams or dream images.

That was the surrealist artists' goal; paintings seeming of dream-like quality, and not of the real world. I learned about this a bit a while back, but I can't remember if the art was inspired by real dreams, or just by the dream world. EDIT: I forgot to mention it, but surrealism is one of my favorite art types. Looks so cool.

[/b] another thing is that surrealism's intent is to show a more true reality, a "more real" image that reflects the thoughts of the unconscious mind, which obviously lends itself to dreams though not necessarily emulating the dream world. However, as it turns out, most of the artists used dreams as their inspiration at least part of the time because dreams are really one of the few things most people can look into their unconscious mind with. That's one of the reasons I myself really enjoy surrealistic painting and film (eg. eraserhaed).

Yeah Definitely: I Love Salvador Dalí. And Surreal Art in General. Bizarre Realities as seen in dreams. Usually with huge symbolical meaning and truth behind the Visual display: also just as in Dreams. It has aways greatly inspired me to ''Surrealise'' my own drawing works. And lately I've been developing my style more and more into the Surrealism-direction. Gotta love it.

Personally, I can't see a resemblance between dreams and surreal art. My dreams are always pretty normal and boring - the stuff that happens in my dreams is usually stuff that could easily happen in real life. Whereas surrealism usually shows stuff floating and normal objects put totally out of context etc.

Whereas surrealism usually shows stuff floating and normal objects put totally out of context etc. [/b] well...Welcome to my weird ass dreamworld Dreams about me being in a dark Forrest with ''some girl'' and we're seeing A huge hot air balloon shaped after a Mummy-face comming close to the ground and an army of Mummies loading themselves from the Airballoon's basket to the ground and chasing after us in the Forrests. Then SUDDENLY (as that goes in dreams) I was sitting in a very tight, small Dungeon cell with that same unknown girl next to me (She had red/black striped pantyhoses) and a small eye-height opening behind us which was picthblack and 2 mummyhands comming out of the there and Grabbing me by the Throat from behind: Then I awoke shocked...and amused. That's pretty surreal ainit? a Dream from years ago. I can remember it like it was last night cuz it was so profound and bizarre. Most of my dreams have been like that.

Check out the old Luis Buñuel films "Un chien andalou" and "L'age d'or". "Un chien andalou" was a collaboration with Salvador Dalí, and "L'age d'or" started out as a collaboration with him.

[/b] I may have seen that, though I'm not sure. I just know I saw some old movie with salvador dali stuff a while back, and it was pretty cool.

[/b] You'd remember this one... it's about 16 minutes long and it opens with a very graphic shot of a woman's eye ball being slit with a razor (it's shocking as anything you see in movies today, and this movie was released in 1928&#33. The film takes the term "surrealism" to it's absolute limits. Dalí designed the dream sequences for Hitchcock's "Spellbound", not sure if you're thinking of that.

It's definitely memorable, especially the opening scene where your eyes are tricked into believing he just sliced the woman's eye, when in fact if you look closely it's easy to tell that it was a cow's head. It makes an interesting relationship, taking advantage of the human eye to make it appear as if a human eye has been sliced in half.

Surrealism is my favorite style of art...and Dali, the perverted fascist that he was haha...is probably my favorite artist. Of course surrealism is influenced by dreams. Wasn't this coincidental with Freud, and the importance he began to place on the interpretation of dreams and such? I might be wrong on that point. Anyways...I think Dali took alot of inspiration from hypnogogic hallucinations. Just look at his one piece, "Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bumblebee around a Pomegranate a Second Before Awakening" ...I think the title of the piece says it all right there. I saw part of an animated cartoon that Dali had started with Disney back in 1945 called Destino. They just finished and released it in 2003 I believe. Pretty cool stuff.

It was coincidental with Freud. At that point people realized sleeping and dreaming were just more than spending a lot of hours with your eyes closed I haven't heard anyone saying something about Magritte while he was also a very good artist.

Okay here is another one maybe you can relate more to this one BadassBob: [/b] It's not really fullblown Surreal, but has a Surreal nature, mixed with Orientalism-Atmosphere and Cartoony/realistic touches in them too. Styles I adopted and blended together into my own. They really look good SKA. I myself am more of a fan for Surrealism that is painted very realistic, but this work is really cool. I especially like the Politics picture. BTW zie ik net dat je nederlands bent. Ik ook!

hey great post man it was really relevant and insightful [/b] thank you its taken mostly from surrealist studys and research papers ive been doing over the last few years. i have the bibliography here... it comprises over two hundred sources, over 50 of which are direct sources. also, that was my term paper for my modern art class this year at cambridge university, id hate to brag, but i feel compelled to not that it garnered an A+.
